Hi

Thought I would post about my first impressions of my new all Rega setup I have been playing for the last couple of weeks.

First of all some quick background.... I have been into hifi for as long as I can remember and had a few systems including Arcam, Cyrus, Marantz, Consonance and now Rega.

Whilst going though a split up with my other half, I had to sell all my hifi to get the money for rent etc etc. This means I am starting at the bottom again, so thought I would buy am all in one and go from there. After a few months the bug caught again and this is where I am now.

So..... quick visit to David at Radlett Audio had me coming back with a Rega Brio R. First impressions were that is was a great amp with quite a bit of weight and enough detail to tell good from bad recordings. I was using my Marantz MCR603 as a transport which sounded nice, but wondered what it would sound like with the addition of some decent speakers.

Found some ex dems at Audio T in Swindon and auditioned the MA RX6 and the Rega RS3. The MA were OK but really bassy and not in a good way! Loved the Regas as the sound was clean and fast without the overblown bass of some speakers. So now I am playing my fav music through these speakers and thinking life is good. Then I wondered what they would be like with the addition of the Apollo R as a source??

So.. back to David and came away with the Apollo R. Intial thoughts were not positive straight of the box. The music was smooth but sounded recessed and the voices were all over the place. Thought I had made a big mistake as all of the pace and rhythm had gone out of the music and to be honest the Marantz sounded better! I am not a patient chap, so emailed David as there was clearly something wrong. I was running Atlas Navigator interconnects, so thought a change may bring things back, plus some patience to let things burn in (maybe!). David suggested the new Rega Connect 2, so another trip to Saffron Walden and back with the interconnects. Wow! what a difference, all the musicality came back. The music sounded more cohesive and the speed has returned and before long I was tapping my toes again. An amazing difference just from a change of interconnects.

I thought "now I done", it all sounded great and very engaging, but there was something nagging in the back of my mind. I have quite a large room and although I liked the sound, wouldnt it be great to get a larger speaker to give me that sense of scale and emotional connection to the music I always wanted!? I left it for a couple of days until I could not take it any longer, I just had to find out what a larger speaker could do to my listening pleasure. So.... back to Saffron Walden for some demoing and I emerged with some Rega RS5's. Whacked them up at home and blimey!! They definately have bigger sound and far more engaging. Highs were clear, lows were low enough, voices were realistic and together, and these were speakers straight out of the box!

As the speakers broke in, or my ears (depending on your point of view) over the next few days, I felt that the tone of the music was getting a bit squewed at the extremes, a bit bang and tizz for me. I was running Atlas Hyper 3 speaker cable which is great, but quite analytical, so I wondered whether a change of cable would help, especially knowing that Rega syngery was probably the key. By chance (yes another opportuntity to spend yet more cash!!!) a 2x3.5m pair os Duet cable was going on ebay, lovely I thought. Won the cable, put banana's on and hooked it up. Oh dear!!! Sounds completely crap! Way too smooth, pretty dull sounding, voices are recessed, and the speed has gone again! As you can probably tell patience is not one of my strong points!

Anyway, 2 days later (today) its beginning to sound quite nice again, speed is back, the unexciting tracks I played are begining to come together and sound OK now. Voices are back to being cohesive and not wafty all over the place and its sounding a bit more dynamic and I am really trying to be patient! Only time will tell I suppose, but I love the overall presentation of the Rega stuff and love the clean fast sound they make and I am starting to really enjoy listening to my music again

Just thought that this is a bit long, so if you are still reading by twoddle, many thanks! A big thanks to David at Radlett Audio for all the advise and no BS opinion he has, which has really helped me navigate through my confused brain around what amp, cd player, cables etc etc.

I will keep you upto date with progress and write a much shorter piece next time!! Thanks for reading

So, how long before you're next trip to Saffron Walden to pick up your Rega DAC then Shari?

Heard it for myself swapping it in to a Rega system, couldn't believe the improvement, TQ Black. Amazing in a Rega system.

Aye, I think the DAC completes the picture here. I do like the RS5 but they wouldn't work in my room and I do love what their little pals the RS3 can be capable of.

I made the choice to go all Rega some time ago and haven't regretted it. If all goes well I will have a new dedicated room next year and whatever ends up in there will have to quite special as I'll be comparing it to the Rega system for enjoyment and involvement.

Agree with a couple of the comments....

Try some TQ Cables and try the Rega Dac, both are superb

Thanks for comments. I will wait a few weeks for the system to settle and then if I think it needs it try the TQ and maybe the DAC as well. Got to leave something to look forward to!

Audition the TQ cables along with a few others if you can Shari as the TQ stuff has a specific character which isn't to everyone's taste. Talk Electronics Talk3 is worth a try too, it gets a big thumbs up from many members here ;)

Yes will do. I have a few cables at home. I tried it with Chord Epic and the presentation was similar, but the duet sounded more natural. Also tried with the Atlas Hyper 3 and superficially sounded better but a bit bang and tizz for me. Vocals popped out nicely though. Again duet sounded more rounded and natural.

I have only had the system for a few weeks, and although I play it a lot, I think there is still more to come from it.

Another thing to consider is how good the quality of your electricity is, all kit can and will be strangled by poor mains and yet its so over looked. Sometimes you have issues you don't know you had until they're gone ;)

Depends on how far you want to take it.

Yep good call. That was next on my list to upgrade. I just have the leads the units came with and they are plugged into a cheap 6 way extension at the moment

One thing to be aware of is: the impact on the sound will vary, depending on how 'clean' your mains are.

The other thing to not do is buy a belkin pf40 and run your amp through it and expect explosive dynamics; I'm not saying don't run your amp through a conditioner/regenerator, just make sure if you do, get one with headroom to allow it to breathe.

One other thought on this is asdding good linear PSUs has made a huge difference in my system and many others report benefits to theirs too. Notice I didn't say it will do the same in yours, I don't know your kit but is a safe bet it would help :) out of interest, does the Rega DAC have an external PSU?

Hope that helps somehow.

***EDIT*** if you're going to use the cheap block for a while, try changing the order that the plugs go into the lead, its very likely the socket nearest the leads end will get the 'best' juice, so put your source there first, or your amp (if not already like that). It might get you a boost in SQ.

The rega DAC has an onboard PS plus toroidal transformer Martin ;)

Quick update

Left the kit on all weekend and it's sounds great today. More dynamic, better detail and depth to the music and no my ears are not adjusting to the sound as I have not listened to it over the weekend at all. I think it still has a way to go though

My Brio-R took some 3 weeks to settle in. Wasn't very impressed at the beginning but I guess I'm much more patient than you. It was worth the wait, love it now!

Depends on how far you want to take it.

Rega speakers are wired with perfectly good copper stranded cable and, in my personal opinion, should be connected to the amp using similar no-foo speaker wires. Dave does sell TQ and would be happy to be a source of such for you I'm sure, but my sensible choice that many here like a lot is the Talk 3 at a 'mere' £4 per metre plus termination. No obvious 'character,' and sufficient gauge to be used in runs up to around 8 - 9 metres with no deterioration of amp-damping etc. IMO, why spend hundreds on anything else when you should then go back to the source and further improve that?

Sorry to butt in on a Rega thread, but I hope the above will help to put some genuine common sense in all this. Just enjoy the bloody music and beware dealer-chains selling well known cable brands en mass, since they get extra margin for stocking it all (60% in the case of one popular brand with stylish racks to present all the range in...).

Hi Shari,

A thread here you may find interesting
http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?23512-A-cable-thread-for-Rega-system-owners/page8

Might I also add that the biggest upgrade I made to my system so far was a rega turntable... The digital stuff sings nicely but adding an analogue source was like the missing link.

Thanks everyone for there advice so far.
Just a quick update on where I am with it all. Hardware kit is:

Rega ApolloR
Rega BrioR
Rega DAC
Rega RS5

Other bits:

Got the CD Player attached to the DAC via an Audioquest VDM-3 cable (not tried anything else and this was on offer for £30). The DAC was attached to the amp via Rega Couple 2, but found my old Chord Chorus sounded better in the long run. Speaker cable was Rega Duet which sounded OK, but then tried the TQ Black (via Dave of course!) and it just blew it away, so how have that attached. Speakers are on granite chopping boards which helps tighten things up from having then on the wood floor. Also have Rega power leads on the CD player and amp which did make a difference to my amazement, as it was a bit of a punt!

Altogether things are sounding really good now, although I may even things up eventually and get all TQ cable, but not sure at the moment. Still think the sound could open up a little more, but for now concentrating on enjoying the music!
