My wifes ex-husband stayed for dinner for the first time last week rather than make the poor guy hang around waiting for his disorganised kids to be ready to go back. Sue dragged him into the living room to listen to the record player, which he was duly impressed with. Harry says "Every bloody person who comes to this house has to listen to that bloody HiFi...."

I'm married to an audiophile!!

Lol @ the article.

I try to not say anything to anyone now.I can understand how boring it must be if you're not into it.

I do find it very strange that most people like music but so few take an interest in how to improve it though.

I used to give the system a spin for anyone who was curious about it's capabilities, but one person utterly deflated my enthusiasm when they said "I like lots of bass and yours hasn't got as much as they have at discos". Peasant.

Maybe they would prefer to spend their hard-earned money on music? Plus, if you look at this or any other hifi forum, there's a huge variety of opinion about what constitutes an improvement, and how best to achieve it. Source first, or speakers/room? Digital or analogue? Physical media or streaming? Solid state or valves? Cables: important to spend £££s or just use bog standard stuff? And that only scratches the surface of the dilemmas facing the consumer. Most people can't be doing with that sort of stuff. Maybe we're the weirdos in this scenario.

You make it sound like I was suggesting they spend all of their money on the system and not their music, which isn't what I was getting at.

My point is about being inquisitive about things. Anything that interests me, I read into, to see how it might improve my understanding or appreciation of what's going on. I'm not saying everyone has to be the same as me.

Something on those lines or total disinterest to the point of not appearing to notice it even when presented with jaw dropping dynamics, transparency, sound stage etc are, in my experience, par for the course from non audiophiles.... girlie's seem even less interested than that... but strangely seem to notice dust that I hadn't and comment on the size of it :eyebrows:..... the hifi that is :D

I know where the 'boring' conversations come from and the source of my zeal.

I know that a budget system well implemented can outperform expensive kit badly implemented. We can always optimise irrespective of our budgets.

Frank - I once had a similar comment re bass from someone to which i replied, 'if its something which goes boom you want then don't buy a HiFi, buy a hand grenade instead'

Record shops have become magnets for middle-aged, socially awkward men attracted by products labelled ‘Audiophile Edition’.

Nail head interface

Thankfully at the recent shows the amount of bag and literature collectors was refreshingly down on past events :)

The number of conversations that started

"My LP12, Nait 3 and Linn Kann's are still as good as anything at this event" were also kept to a minimum :)

Mind you one gentleman who was from north of the border was complaining bitterly to a certain magazine editor over missed opportunities at certain demonstrations at the recent show. He demanded his entrance fee back, to which the said editor happily stated 'Certainly sir, not a problem and I shall have you politely escorted from the premises as well' To which the gentleman replied, there is no need for that mumble, mumble

I can not think of any other business that attracts such stereo typical folk, even the Jaguar owners club are not that anally retentive.

You don't hear many systems with 'jaw dropping dynamics' these days as precious few speakers will do that. You do hear plenty of systems that will play very loud but of course that's an entirely different thing.

I do try hard not to drop into full audiophile speak when family or friends who are not 'into it' come around to visit however I often lapse. Just yesterday one of my daughters popped round to visit and commented on the Ditton 44's and off I went... She politely listened to what I had to say and when I'd finished she cocked an eyebrow and said, "Geez Dad your worse than a bloody trainspotter". Cheek!!!

Figure of speech innit... humorous thread n all that! Mind you my KEF Referance 105.3 speakers (rebuilt crossovers) at 93dBW, max output of 116dB and a very easy load do dynamics very well!

We might have to disagree there! Avant Gard Trio's, Cessaro Lizst's, Living Voice Vox Olympians a vintage Western Electric system or indeed something like Speedy Steve's 5 Way horns do dynamics very well. I'd be very surprised if the KEFs were able to do something similar tbh. I'm sure they have other virtues though.

All too coloured for me! I find the KEFs give me an excellent balance of accuracy, low colouration, tight bass, good imaging and combine it with dynamics and max loudness very well. I'm sure they're not as dynamic as the models you named though! Horses for courses :)

Have you actually heard any of the above? :D

With the honourable exception of the WE's the archetypal horn colourations are a thing of the past.

So does the brainless twat driving a pimped up and rusty 1.2 Corsa through the town every night, but just because his nodding dog on the parcel shelf bounces up and down in time to the din, it doesn't necessarily mean the sort of BASS you or I perceive to be accurate :eyebrows:

Spot on

I love bass, but hate the bumbumbumbum from such
The bass I now get from my lovely system is real bass

a pimped up and rusty 1.2 Corsa :

I heard such a thing a while ago parked up in a sidestreet, stereo going at full chat with the doors and windows closed. From about 40 feet away all I could hear was the bass but it sounded amazingly good, very deep and nuanced. If your living room was big enough to park the car in it would make a damn good subwoofer.

Yes, but think of the fun you could have. 'I'm just nipping out in the subwoofer' you could say to your wife. 'Have you seen the keys to my subwoofer?' 'What are you doing Sunday?' 'Oh, I'm going to wash the subwoofer' and so forth...

Lived in Hackney in the late 80s and heard my first full on ICE system whilst walking down the street - you could feel the bass through the pavement.
I'd actually love to put a really "good" system into the Landrover at some point...:eyebrows:...perhaps I'll sacrifice the boot space for a great big sub :-)
