A friend drew my attention to some spring motor mounts for the Thorens TD-124, which replace the rubber grommet types used. All the details of these springs are at http://www.hanzehifi.nl/merken-bezigheden/thorens-garrard/thorens/td124 . The springs are specially made, and look like this:

This is good honest mass/spring system design, devoid of flummery or bullshit claims, so I've ordered a set of the springs. Wait out for impressions!

Most interested in your findings Hugo, especially how it'll fair with the Papst motor.

These are only for the Thorens E50 motor, not the Papst.

Hi Hugo.

I wonder if they are sturdy like the rubber ones? What I mean is if you move the TT would they hold the motor well through a lateral movement too? Not that owners would be chucking them about but just wondering when moving the TT.

Hi Hugo.

I don't think that is an issue as such, since the scope for movement is relatively small anyway. I am interested to know how they perform in practice, particularly with the belt tugging the motor to one side. Wait out!

Hugo,

Interested to know how this wee experiment with the new motor spring mounts gone?, was it an improvement?.

P.S. Just took delivery of my 124 mk1 from my sister who came over to attend her son's graduation,
i absolutely love the functionality and form of this wee beauty, lovely condition with Ortofon plinth + BL 104 arm,
fettled it a bit (dry bearing and rubbing top platter),found it running a tad slow, will go over to PFM and gleam what i can from TonyL's thread,
very happy bunny. :mex:

I've been too busy with my father's affairs to do anything with the springs yet.

Might be helpful info, i have been in contact with Hanzehifi and they happen to have a Papst motor 124 to hand,
as it was the 1st request, they had to check for me to see if it fits and happy to say it does, a set duly ordered.

I thought that I ought to bring this thread up to date. The Hanze HiFi springs are a complete doddle to fit and require virtually no tweaking once in. As Hanze HiFi claim, transmitted motor noise is noticeably less than with the rubber grommets - pressing an ear or stethoscope to the armboard or chassis confirms this, without any doubt. Whether lower motor noise translates into better musical performance is something else and I'm unable to comment much on that; however the motor springs do what is claimed for them, at reasonable cost, and can be firmly recommended. Here they are in my venerable TD-124:
