View Full Version : HELP! What the hell can I use to strip the paint from my Sansui AU719 case

I've tried paint stripper but that dosent seem to work. Any ideas?

Have it grit blasted.

Then powder coated.

Nope, cost is prohibitive I'm afriad! This project is only being done in my spare time and as cheaply as possible. Thanks for your suggestion anyway.

First of all, Andrew. Get some Fairy power spray... Honestly it stripped my speaker cabs beautifully. Just googlie it, it's great paint remover.

Mind the heat doesn't warp the casework. If it does, you'll never get it straight again!

By the way, grit blasting isn't expensive.

The casework is 3mm thick and I only have a small heat gun. I would literally have to stand until kingdom come for the casework to get "red" hot, I dont think I'll warp the casework but thanks. I think the casework is covered more in a black plastic covering rather than paint. Heat does seem to work but its slow progress. :(

With great difficulty is the answer. The best solution is to have it media blasted - but as you don't want to pay for that you will have to sand it down by hand - enjoy....

I doubt you'd pay more than about £15 to get it blasted. It's a five minute job with the right gear and grit. Try a local engineering company or car restorer, most will have what you need. The finished surface will be nicely 'keyed' for a new paint job.

A car restorer might but a normal body shop won't (in my experience)- a company that powder coats alloy wheels (or any powder coating company) will though.

Well I finally managed to get an hour on the sansui case today. I'm pleased to report that heat gun and scraper in hand has yielded excellent results. I managed to complete 60% removal of the paint. Another hour should have it stripped and then maybe an hour to remove the rust with wire wool and we should be good to go.
