a slightly differnent take on one of the above images
for those who know anything about this sort of thing, i have maintained dynamic range by using lightroom enfuse plugin and emblending 7 images 1 stop apart
for those who dont, this means i have been able to retain detail in the sky as well as in the shoadows. the result on the computer screen gives a bit to much colour in the sky but when printed out the effect it more subtle.
for those who like to analise this sort of thing the 2 shops she is walking past are called "la vogue" and "Mithani jewellers" . that fact makes the image for me but thats just my take on it!
it was taken on a panasonic lx3

Discoloured sky apart, much prefer the colour version of that pic, just brings the grime out more - the monochrome version adds a bit of timelessness, but just makes me feel distanced from it all.

As for the cheetah photograph, absolutely tremendous pic but ouch! Not something you stumble upon everyday I'm thinking. Was it a lucky find or did you spend forever stalking them?

i wish i could show you the print, i spent a good few hours tweaking the image for the perfect print out. the detail is superb and the colour just stunning.. even if i do say my self!

we had a very lucky day, but we did have a very good guide! he knew the area like the back of his hand
we saw leopard lions with kill and the cheeta in the space of an hour
the following day we were taken back to the lions with thier kill and watched as they left and saw the hyeena vutures and jakel come in to scavenge that was the moment of the trip for me it just made an othwise very hard to comprehend situation seem so real!
if you really interested the main bulk of the shots from the trip are here http://hamishgill.blogspot.com/

Hi Hamish,
I have just waded through you post and the links you provide - brilliant - how I envy you your skill. Where do you find time for photography AND music in the depth and with the enthusiasm that you obviously have for both.
Many years ago, when working shifts and things were quiet, I had many animated discussions with work colleagues on whether photography was an art or a science. Then I leaned towards the 'art' argument but now I think that it is a complex mixture of both, when done properly (as by you).
Congrats again,

Great photos! I used to live in Africa as a child, and if you got to see leopard, you are a fortunate man indeed.Probably the most elusive large mammal in Africa.

I followed that blog link and .... what have you done to that poor little Olympus Trip!?!?!? You can't just massacre a wonderful little camera like that without an explanation! Worra hoodlum!!!!
(I'm going to lock mine away in case you're ever in the area!)

i work both and play both.. i am one of those sorts who needs a hobby or 2 to think about and why not make money doing them! very nice of you too say such good things about my work etc!
as for the art vs science in photography: i guess its dependant on subject situation and photographer
an understanding of the rules of composition and how a camera works can be taught scientifically and mathematically but the natural ability to see how shapes, colour and depth work together within time to create the "moment" is the source of the artform
i consider my self an artist with a passion for the equipment and a desire to make enough money to servive.
someone with a camera phone on holiday in new york probably has a different outlook but it doesnt mean they might not take an award winning photo of the events of 9/11
thats the beauty of it; a rank ameture can do something masterfull in the blink on an eye and someone who has been a "pro" all thier life might not ever take a photo that you or i would like
i could bable on for hours about this but it wont... cheers again for your comments

Would you believe I was in that post office about 10 minutes ago? Welcome to my village. It doesn't look like that today, as it's blowing about force 9 up the river!

If that was taken the summer before last, then you may well have been served by my son. This summer though you'd have needed to go to the Swan (just visible behind the head of the lady reading the paper), where you would have been served by my daughter. For myself, I always stayed faithful to the Dolphin (bottom of the hill past the post office, and just out of shot on the opposite side of the river on the far left side of the same photo), having been a regular since about 1968.

It's very nice to have a village of about 1600 souls with three good pubs and a yacht club to drink in!

Shane. Wife used to holiday at Newton Ferrers as a child and they used to stay at The Buttery just down from the Post Office. Wife and I have visited the area on and off for 30 years or more. Last year we stayed near Kingsbridge and visited Noss and did the coastal walk (again) from the car park, up round the headland and back up the estuary to the pub. The lady reading the paper is indeed her indoors!

Yes, we were served by a very nice young man. Mind you the waitresses are as gorgeous as the crab baguettes

We would love to live there.

It's a fabulous place. I've been here since I was eleven, and wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

Ah yes, the cliff walk...

If anyone knows how to make that fit, feel free.

I love the effects with this high dynamic range stuff..(HDR?)
What sort of software is Lightroom Enfuse. Will it work on Mac. I have tried the trial version of Photomatix...but its all a bit 'cartoony'.
Your pic isn't though...quite subtle in fact, but brings out all the wonderful detail.

thanks!
i have been concidering getting a large print i have of it framed :eyebrows:

lightroom is a photoediting sweet that costs about £250 from adobe (well worth every penny!) enfuse is a pluggin much like photomatix
photomatix can make some very subtle effects though if you play with it
i personaly think the sky in my image looks a bit daft on the computer, but it does look a lot better in print!
cheers for the nice comments though!
