This means the standard one is now £144 and the "Turbo" £297. There is £11.50 postage to add to that for tracked, insured next day delivery.

They sound great prices for phono stages, and from your posts I would expect them to be good ones. Personally, I have no requirement, but I looked on your website out of curiosity ( I have been playing with Firebottles stage, and struggling with my lack of understanding, so they are on my radar). I may be missing something, but I don't know an Arkless 640P and a brief search on your website has not left me any better informed.

You might find more interest if there were some accessible information about the products. Am I just being dumb and looking in the wrong place? :scratch:

Richard they are the price for Jez's mods to the relevant Cambridge Audio models. You have to supply him with a used/new 640/651p. If you buy new approx £120 or find a used on forums or Ebay.

The originals are pretty damned good as they are and can only get better with some careful component replacement I reckon.

There's a hell of a lot more to the mods than component replacement! It's pretty much an Arkless design which re-uses the PCB, original internal and external PSU, sockets/hardware etc in order to keep the price well down. Look here! http://www.pinkfishmedia.net/forum/showpost.php?p=1840175&postcount=7 The Arkless 640P completely wipes the floor with the standard unit and, according to many customer reviews, it can take on rivals at £1000+ And that's not even the "Turbo" version!

How much extra for a toggle switch option for MC / MM ?

Also, I appreciate the 12v AC is turned into DC inside the unit, presumably 12v DC ? Would there be any potential benefits in by-passing this and running straight from a battery? I have been impressed how a class D amp sounds when powered by a battery and wonder if the Cambridge used in this manner might offer the same gains.

A toggle switch with gold plated contacts to suit the very low level signals involved can be fitted for an extra £25 (I also have to drill the hole to a pretty good accuracy and wire it up with screened cable). It only requires cutting or re-soldering two small bits of wire, which are arranged in a loop to make it easy, in order to do this yourself without the switch BTW.
Not only would the battery be no advantage but it also would not even work. The internal PSU arrangement of the CA amps is quite clever in that it works as a split voltage doubler and so relies on the input being AC in order to give + & - 25 V or so to then go to the internal voltage regulators.. it even has filtering before hand as part of what you get in the standard CA package...
I really feel I must stress that the "wall wart" supply is no limitation on the performance!

Audio Al has just left Tarzan Towers with his " Turbo" phono stage and l have to say after a brief listen it sounded superb l have to say, very weighty, full, warm, very nice ..... however watch this space for a full blown bake off of analogue components, which we will arranging soon- should be a fun and a laugh at the same time.:)

Laser etched graphics!! In any colour you want as long as it's black!.... the original donor unit that is..... silver against silver doesn't show up too good ;)

This is now an option at an extra cost of £30.

Unfortunately it can't be a no charge standard feature due to the costs involved in having this done in such small numbers and the random nature of it (one next week? Maybe a couple in 3 weeks time?) if you see what I mean ;)
