subwoofer cables

This is not intended as another of those endless cables threads :rolleyes:, but I have a specific question.

I have two active subwoofers and need to get a pair of cables with rca connectors. My question is, given that they are active speakers should I just get normal interconnects, or is there some merit in buying cables that are constructed specifically as 'subwoofer cables'?

Normal interconnects should be fine as long as you're not using 10m or more lengths. There are plenty of Van Damme style phono cables in various lengths on ebay and the screened tour-grade cables are fine, low noise when handled and flexible for dressing round corners etc. The Belkin Pure AV silver/grey 'we' know and love can also be supplied in longer lengths, the 1m ones having gone yonks ago and these seem fine.

It's been a while since I ran a sub in my system Richard and my experience relates to just one make of cable, that being Belkin PureAV Silver. I ran the sub using standard audio IC and dedicated subwoofer cables from the range and could detect no difference myself. Hope that helps ;)

I believe "sub-woofer cables" are so labelled because they often are a single rca to rca instead of a pair. As the other posters have noted, there should be no special requirements for a subwoofer interconnect, except that it has a greater chance of being long. Any long, unbalanced cable is going to be more prone to interference than a short cable, and so the quality of shielding is more likely to be important. But nothing special apart from that.
