View Full Version : How have folks down south been affected by the storms?
We got next to nothing here in North Wales, but there have been some horrendous tales about homes being cut off from power and massive damage...
Hope all our members in the south of the country are safe and well.

Marco, I have yet to venture out to service my public on my trusty steed (RM red bike:D), but it does not at the moment seem to have had the same effect as the '87 storm. We have power and the torrential rain we had in the night has stopped. Winds are gusting, but it is said that the worst should clear through by
10am. I suspect we will be held back in the depot until 10ish.

The cats won't go out and the wife won't get up. I said "get that washing out there woman, you've been complaining you can't get anything dry!"
Getting breezy here in the East Midlands and it's also very wet, the house was where I left it when I got up this morning so all is well ;)

The tiles on our roof were rattling away last night, kept us awake I can tell you. A few fence panels down, but nothing serious. According to the BBC there was an 88 mph gust at Portland Bill during the storm, that's only a few miles away. Calmer now though.

Checking around first thing I saw huge winds, but we seemed to be ok 5-6am
Then the power went, fortunately some light around by them
Cycling seemed a little too brave so jumped in the car to come to work
On my way out I saw a silver birch on the overhead power lines - that should explain the power loss.
Will tell them from work, a roundabout route as there was a tree blocking my usual route in. Bits of trees down all over the place, small branches twigs, leave everywhere. Large puddles across many roads.
Now I'm at work it's a lovely sunny day !

A spot of rain and even I could blow the trees harder.
Good and gusty down in London, of course all the trains and tubes shut up shop so there's next to no rush hour.
A few big tree limbs scattering the road but nowt compared to '87 and '89. Beautiful black white and blue sky, the light is fantastic.

Here in NW France we were expecting it to be a bit of a 'mare as we were promised widespread gails (see map) but it seems to have passed without too much incident. It was howling last night and there was very heavy rain but a cursory glance around outside suggests the house is still in one piece and looking down the field no trees seem to have come down. Nice bright sunshine now.

Definitely a bit blowy down in Hampshire and we woke up this morning to find several trees down near us. The hairiest bit though was driving to Southampton Airport last night at about 9:30pm to collect Mrs. B who was flying back from Dublin. The rain was horrendous on the M27 and this was compounded by several morons who don't know the difference between rain and fog and who had their fog lights on. :mental:

Here in NW Essex/Cambridgeshire, we did a 15 mile round trip this lunchtime and there was hardly any damage to speak of (thankfully). Just a few extra twigs, a couple of small branches and lots of leaves on the ground. Did the media make too much of the impending doom..:eek:

Sitting 160' up on a South-west facing hill on the South Devon coast I fully expected to be blown to Kingdom Come. In fact, I slept like a log and woke to find all normal. If I didn't have a telly I'd never have known anything unusual was going on.

Yes. Have you ever tried following someone along a motorway in torrential rain with their fog lights on? I can assure you the only thing that reduces visibility in a case like this is the bright red beacon of light in front of you that obscures everything else.

Just got much worse. Just heard a friend of Harry's that he did sports coaching with died when she was crushed by a tree falling on the mobile home she was in.

I can't believe the idiocy of folk leaving something like that lying out when severe storms have been predicted!! :doh:
Make sure you bill the morons for the cost of repairs to your fence, especially as it could've been much worse, if the fooking thing had gone through your window! :rolleyes:

Bird house blown off hook, few more apples down off tree, still many left on. Rattan chairs moved a few inches. That was all for us in Surrey/Hants/Berks borders
Down 'ere in Cornwall it started slashing down with rain just after 8.00pm and I went to bed around 11.00 expecting the hooley to start around then as the forecasters predicted. Nothing, apart from a few light puffs of wind. Fell asleep around midnight and . . . . . still nothing. Opened the curtains this morning expecting total carnage all around, but no, we are surrounded by tall trees and not even a bucketful of leaves on the ground from them.
All the countless hours of news coverage for days on end about this impending storm, endless playbacks of Michael Fish's infamous 1987 gaffe and miles of VT footage of uprooted trees back then, but to be honest I have known a LOT worse at other times since than what was fed to us was going to happen last night. Obviously, the news was a bit thin on the ground for the past week to make such a big play about what was in reality not much :rolleyes:

That's what my brother said Frank. He's near Helford opposite Falmouth and I was expecting him to have had a proper storm, but I rang him today and he said if it wasn't for the forecasts, he wouldn't have known there was anything out of the ordinary.
What if the media had said nothing? Imagine the cries of anguish if we had all woken up this morning only to discover that the entire southern half of England had been relocated to central Siberia... :lol:

Gotta feel sorry for Denmark, the storm intensified as it crossed the North Sea and they took a direct hit. There were reports of gusts up to 115mph on the northwest shoreline :(

Large branch off a tree in our road in Chiswick, the heavy bit missed Viv's car by about a foot :) I have a garage in Twickenham round the corner from Michael Fish. There are trees down in his road and his garden, so I'll check the garage tomorrow. Could have been worse

Noticed the bird house on my patio at an odd angle, the cover for the barbie is at the bottom of the garden and finally a tree down in a road on my way to the Gym yesterday morning. I got out of my car walked over to the tree, scratched my head and thought that's enough exercise for one day I'm going home. Actually what happened was while going up Dennis Lane a van flashed his lights at me as he was coming down, puzzled I wondered what I had done to upset him. 300 yds further up I found out, the tree from somebody's front garden had been uprooted and was lying fully across the road. I turned around and went back the way I had come. I flashed a lady in a Chelsea tractor and she probably wondered what she had done to upset me. You can see where this is going and so on and so forth. Any way I did a mile detour and arrived at the gym safely.

Delighted to say our power came back on around noon, so only off for 6 hours.
Surprised to see the silver birch still leaning on the overhead electric cable
That wasn't the cause of the cut
Being sorted to day we are told.
I had to endure the pain of picking up the ladder and a bird table though .....
It was reasonably bad in this area but didn't affect us too much... Wifey took longer to get to work (even though she left at stupid o'clock to avoid the traffic).
A few trees down, or remains of tree's down!
Rather glad I had my tree taken down earlier this year, otherwise we might have had an unwanted house guest!
