View Full Version : The MCRU Ultimate & Ultimate HC Mk. III Power Cables

It’s no secret that the MCRU ‘Ultimate’ series of power cables are based on the Furukawa 2.1mm and 2.6mm (HC) series of solid core screened PCOCC-A OFC cable using the continuous cast Ohno process. This cable, designed for in-wall applications, is serious stuff, very stiff and resistant to bending. However, there is much more to David’s Ultimate Mk. III cables than just the Furukawa, as you will see when I returned my earlier spec cables to be upgraded. What is added is an outer braiding of carbon loaded material; the very best Furutech rhodium connectors, both 13A UK plug and IEC connector (or a 20A connector if you have Chord or other equipment requiring it); the very best in-plug fuse that David can find, from Synergistic Research; and finally, internal filters which are fitted at both connector ends.

http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7432/10520605384_de2e6bd955.jpg

My past experiments have shown me that my preference for mains connectors is rhodium, then silver and, least preferred, gold, for the material. I have also found that fuses can make a considerable difference to the sound (I use Hi-Fi Tuning fuses liberally around my system).

The first task was to perform some contortions to get the cable to bend and take the shape required. It is quite heavy and can pull itself out of sockets, so it’s important to shape and support it wherever possible. My system rack is close to the rear wall, so I found myself under and over the rack, bending and shaping, to get it to sit happily. The saving grace is that it retains the shape given to it. I placed the Ultimate HC cable feeding the entire system via my P10 regenerator and the standard Ultimate, with 20A connector, feeding my Chord power amp.

The cables need some good running-in under power in order to achieve their final performance. Discussions of the merits of running-in are outside of the scope of this review; suffice to say that I have always, without fail, heard the effects of a power cable settling down after a period of time. Give them 100 hours and they’ll be ready for serious evaluation. I left mine running for an hour (in my case, my cables were already run-in) and had a good listen to both vinyl and CDs.

After replacing the original cable supplied by Chord and a perfectly serviceable 'kettle' cable supplying the regenerator, the upgrade in performance was striking. None of the usual parameters changed - tonality, etc. - but what was apparent was a whole level of dynamics, vividness and get-up-and-go that had not been there before. The music leaves the speakers to form a fully 3D soundstage, full of micro detail and spatial cues that were there for the listening before but which are now far more fully formed and vivid. In fact, vivid is the operative word for a lot of what these cables deliver. Detail is compelling but placed naturally in the mix, highly resolved with the leading edge of plucked strings and struck piano notes having better shape and definition. Bass is notable not just for its grunt and extension, but also the texture and quality of the notes being struck. I keep coming back to vivid – life-like and believable.

Regarding the best use of such cables, and bearing in mind their price, my favourite applications are for a regenerator inlet or mains distribution block for the HC (effectively supplying the entire system), and the power amp for either the standard or HC depending on the current draw. If you only have the budget for one, start with one of these. As for upgrading from previous versions, my 2.6 was a pure Furukawa and my 2.1 was an Ultimate Mk. II. Both of them (I have listened to them individually) sound better in Mk. III guise, although the improvement is obviously more incremental than the jump from ordinary cables. The HC into my P10 is the biggest single jump in sound quality in my system that a power cable has ever provided.

The Ultimate cables are an investment and will not benefit every system. However, given good resolution, many systems will improve when using an Ultimate to provide the main feed, and the very best will reward use throughout the main components with a significant step-up in performance which I don’t think could be delivered when spending a similar amount in component upgrades. In fact, there comes a level in hi-fi performance where any system screams for its mains power to be taken seriously.

I have used and tried many different power cables in my system, from basic RA Yello through to very expensive Connex, Kimber and Nordost products. Copper, silver and silver plated materials. Solid core and stranded construction. The Ultimate Mk. IIIs are the best power cables I have ever used. They take the quality of the core Furukawa and extend their performance to another level. Since MCRU offer a satisfaction guaranteed or return policy, there is no risk in your trying one out other than to be prepared not to want to return it.

Hi martin.
When I first discovered the cable (which incidentally has been discontinued by furukawa) I listened to it on my own IsoTek Sigmas which I had at the time 2-3 years ago, I thought at the time there was something wrong as a bit of wire cannot make such a dramatic improvement so there had to be some other reason. No it was the cable. In the beginning I had a Furutech gold plated plug and IEC fitted and thought that's as good as it gets. Then our lord and saviour Marco suggested the Furutech FI-50 IEC connector and matching mains plug rhodium plated, not being a fan of rhodium I tried it and the MK1 was born.

Fast forward to today, the 2.6mm cable has ceased production by furukawa so a few metres remains. The 2mm there are 30 x 100 metre reels arriving at Oyaides HQ this week which all are sold, then finished, no more, my stocks are secured so enough to make a few ultimates at least.

Yes it seems a lot of money for a mains lead but if you have a mains regenerator , conditioner, meaty power amps the likes of krell, chord, McIntosh etc etc then there is simply nothing better to power them ( based on 30+ years being a hifi nut).

That's disappointing news about the Furukawa supply, David. Is there any hope of getting any more, or at least an equivalent?

Hi
,
not sure if this will help with supplies, if it is the same cable, this company claims to be able to supply 1000000 metres of it a day!

Even if not exactly the same, they may be able to help.

all the best. Guy

i have plenty of cable thanks Guy

furukawa themselves are stopping production of UP-OCC cable so no one else can make it as they own the only machine that produces it

I may have had the first Mk3 in the wild, with the 16A IEC the Chord Power Amp needs.
That was a huge jump in SQ, but from a vanilla, Chord original lead so it had to be better, but it did come as a huge surprise.

Acid test came yesterday when freshly fettled Ultimate Mk3s arrived.
A very stiff 2.6 cable version and the normal.

This was the high spot of a crap day yesterday and I almost didn't plug them in.
(apart from waking up of course, that's always good and a lot better than the alternative)
So a short session, more to come Sunday

System warmed up nicely for a good couple of hours.
Test with Kimber Signature running the P10.
Good.
Change to old style Ultimate
Wow. That is a huge jump up in SQ for sure. Great opening of the whole soundstage.
- This is a mains cable running a mains regenerator - crazy or what.
Change to Mk3 Ultimate
Ooh nice, like that extra detail, the sound was masked before, now revealed even more clearly.
Change to Mk3 Ultimate 2.6 cable
Small increase in SQ, well worth having.

2nd round
Isis CDP wth Kimber Signature- very nice
Change to Mk3 Ultimate
Oh just wonderful.
<internal voice> You are knackered, must go to bed
<other internal voice> keep listening !

Few more tracks and I called it a night

This morning a bit more with
Mountain Goats and Gary Numan - there's stuff going on there I haven't heard before
Felt like I was sitting in with Mountain Goats

Tomorrow will be very nice
:)

Great, Mike, mirrors my findings exactly. The combination of carbon braid and filters are doing something for sound quality, which is amazing given that you and I both run regenerators. There's a lot to power treatment that we don't yet fully understand.

Its one of the 1000's of dubious chinese/far eastern sites selling fake copies mainly of oyaide, no approvals, and even though they probably sell 1000's of plugs and IEC's worldwide I would never use any of this stuff as I have seen the videos of things setting on fire, not saying for a second this applies to the website in question but I for one would not touch it with a bargepole, as far as getting cable off them, no chance whatsoever.

If I were starting mains cabling from scratch I'd get a schuko mains block with a fused plug at the wall socket and that would alleviate the need for fused plugs to each bit of kit. The best fuse is no fuse. Reckon I'd get more improvements than cable upgrades.

realysm42
02-11-2013, 19:28
This is exactly what I've done. It was hard to judge its impact as I threw a mains conditioner into the equation at the same time, but the overall upgrade was excellent. Really lowered the noise floor a great deal.

PS, any chance of some pics of your system? :eyebrows:

and who gave you that idea dude?

I and many of my audiophile friends use schukos throughout, you still need better wire though as just changing a standard kettle lead to a schuko would help but not by much.

This is an example of a better way to power your equipment, as described by doodoos, fused plug in the wall socket only then the rest schukos, perfectly safe and perfectly legal.

Aren't Schukos reversible, in other words there is no way of preserving live versus neutral?

Mark Grant
02-11-2013, 23:36
That's correct Martin, depending on which way the schuko is plugged in reverses the Live and Neutral.

Safe and legal but likely to void your household insurance, so check before using any part that isn't BS kiteflagged. CE cert might not be enough here, they'll use any excuse to vwriggle out of a claim.

simon I always like your posts I have to say

1000's of audiophiles already have insurance voiding parts in their homes, maybe even millions if you look on the DIY AUDIO forum, one of the chief engineers from the British Electrical Safety Council has gone on record as stating schuko plugs are fine as long as there is a fused uk mains plug from the wall socket which is precisely what I suggested

a quick check with a continuity tester before plugging the schuko plug in will tell you which way round to use it, simple!

I'm not sure about 'safe'... if the equipment on/off switch is wired to switch the live and maybe fused on the live side only reversing polarity could be an issue as the neutral would now be switched and un-fused with part of the input wiring and transformer primary permanently live and a therefore a potential hazard. It would depend heavily on how the appliance is wired. There are plenty of UK 'audiophile' extension leads available why take the risk.

bobbasrah
09-11-2013, 17:32
Huh?
The great British plug may have preserved live and neutral connections, but there are few devices these days which which do not have a double pole isolator on the power feed, which thereafter feeds the transformer.... Any not so manufactured will probably have "made in uk" stamped somewhere...

While there may be 'plenty of UK audiophile extension leads' the rest of Europe looks on questioningly at our quaint notions, whilst plugging in their standard Schuko plugs blissfully unaware of the potential hazard or risk...
We are a most peculiar nation....

If in doubt stick with UK spec mains plugs, that is the sensible approach. No point getting all anal about mains if there's a chance you might be putting yourself and your families lives at risk.

That's correct Martin, depending on which way the schuko is plugged in reverses the Live and Neutral.

If you plug them in the wrong way they are potentially dangerous depending on the way an appliance operates. I suppose one way round this would be to mark the live side on the case in some way. Best to be safe for insurance purposes. Also I suspect some well known audiophile mains leads do not meet British standards. Also remember UK wiring utilises a ring main rather than radial spurs hence the introduction of fused plugs to protect the leads.
