View Full Version : MCRU Ultimate Mk. III Cables
I sent two of my key power cables to David for upgrading to Mk. III status. One was my big Furukawa 2.6 feeding the entire system via the P10 (effectively an Ultimate HC) and the other was an Ultimate feeding my most power hungry component, the Chord power amp. David upgraded them both with carbon loaded outer braiding and internal 'magic' the detail of which he won't reveal. He also replaced a failing Furutech plug for an inline rhodium type (I like rhodium connectors).
He returned them to me today and hasn't even charged me yet. This is typical of David's service. The reason I did this, and sacrificed the sound of my system for a week, is that Mike (MikeMusic) already had one of these Ultimate Mk. IIIs and was enthusing about them. Mike and I know each other's tastes and systems pretty well and, despite him having initially picked up on mains cables from me, this time around he had first bite of the new model.
So to this evening and, having performed the usual contortions to get that big 2.6 cable to bend and take the shape required, I left it running for an hour and had a good listen to both vinyl and CDs. The immediate improvement I noticed is in detail which is simply compelling but not thrown at me; it's more a case of detail everywhere in the soundstage, highly resolved so that the struck edge of strings are immediate and ... err ... striking. In fact, the whole performance has taken a step forward towards that nirvana of life-like and believable. What's so pleasing is that every component, from my sources right through to the Ushers, responds so well to small improvements like this, just giving me more.
I won't go on, simply to say that if you want pretty much the best power cable out there and your system can justify the price then I urge you to try one on David's trial offer. If it doesn't work for you, then fair enough. However, if you use a power regenerator or big amps I urge you to try one. You may well not send it back.
l feel compelled to chime in here and echo Martin's thoughts regarding MCRU mains cables, David after so much teasing about my Nordost Shiva, he sent me a cable to try that he built himself and would " blow away your Siva", well blow me it did ( it was tad more expensive than the aforementioned Shiva but in performance terms was EASILY worth the extra- by a country mile as well, if you a non cable believer then you need to try some of his cables, this guy knows what he is talking about regarding wire let me tell you.
Nice one, Martin. Sounds very interesting! However, as your findings are essentially a mini-review, shouldn't they be in Strokes of Genius? ;)

Sounds like I need my other Ultimates seeing to then.
I was very surprised by the huge difference between the standard Chord power cable and the Ultimate.
Anyone would be happy paying many £100s or £1000s for a new bit of kit to get that improvement
I still remember picking up mains cables from you, starting as cheap as I could on Ebay, not believing they really would make much difference. (A mains cable makes a difference to hifi, surely not ?!) That was the beginning of where my system is today. Sounds fabulous too.

I am having problems understanding this
How can a 1mtr high quality lead make a difference between the wall socket and the equipment ? what about the wiring from the wall socket to the consumer unit , this could be 50 60 70 years old depending on the age of your house
I fitted a 60amp dedicated supply from the main power inlet under the stairs, then under the floor to a dedicated consumer unit feeding 26 double sockets 52 plugs in total with a dedicated earth rod
Sounds good to me ;)

It's been done to death, Al. I would posit that the question should be reversed, i.e. "it sounds remarkably better with this cable, now what mechanism could be responsible for it?" I don't know the answer to that. However, don't forget that a standard ring main can supply a lot of current on demand so a kettle lead will be the bottleneck. The Ultimates are not bottlenecks (just look at the thickness of the cores) and more dynamics and naturalness are the result. There must also be an RFI element in there, as good screened cables always seem to sound better.
I think results will vary with equipment. As I said, regenerators and big power amps seem to respond especially well.
P.S. my wall socket to P10 Ultimate HC lead is 2m long.

'Discussion', in that instance, refers more to debates/enquiries than describing in any detail the sonic merits of a particular cable. This section can of course include a little of both, but when a post is turning into more of a review than anything else, its natural home is SOG. Of course, when I made my original comment, I didn't know that you were later intending to post a 'full-blown' review there.
I look forward to reading that in due course :)

In the main (excuse the pun) I'm a believer in good quality mains leads, I can hear the improvement they make. I also believe in the law of diminishing returns, so if you have spent over a thousand pounds (approx) on a mains cable then you may be a little biased to the advantages.
The bottleneck described in an earlier post does not take into account the bottleneck in every mains lead including the £1000 jobby, the 13amp fuse. No matter how thick the cable is the power still has to go through this very inexpensive item. Should you decide to use a more suitable 3 or 5 amp fuse the problem is even worse. In my own leads I have compromised and use Bussmann 10amp fuses with the exception of the lead that supplies my Isotek Orion distribution block which uses a 13amp fuse. Even worse, most HiFi equipment that have internal protection use fuses of less than 2amps and that includes power amps, most are in the milli-amp region.
To the guys that use Ultimate Mains leads, enjoy your purchases, and I also look forward to reading your reviews.

I compare them to any other upgrade.
Kit cost £100s or £1000s and these bits of wire easily hold their own at both those levels.
I'm still not over my amazement that mains cables can make a difference to a system
This amount of difference is seriously bonkers, especially taking all the other bottlenecks you mention into comparison.
One of the big plusses about mains leads is you can keep them as you upgrade kit.
You can always borrow one and hear for yourself

If somebody would like to loan me one of these cables, I am only to pleased to evaluate within my own system. The issue as I see it is, I don't think my system while very good is up to your standards and the cable may not be able to shine as it may do in yours.

Looking at your system list Clive I think you do it a gross mis-service.
I had many customers of my own mains cables that reported very good results with Cyrus kit.

Hi Frank, my system is very good and I do not under-value it at all, bit it still is not in the same league as others on this forum. Some people have spent double on their systems (not that on its own makes them twice as as good) the law of diminishing returns again.
I get superb results from the 12 or so mains cables I use and as Mike says it's Bonkers because nobody really understands how or why.
How many of you cable fans have calculated or measured the current your system draws, amps? What did you find? I'm glad my expectation bias prevents me from hearing these improvements saves a packet in cash and worry if I got the best cable.
Enjoy.

Well my answer to that is to ask David at MCRU to borrow this aforesaid wonder cable to have a play with it :)

The block if you have one for sure. My best lead is on my Regenerator and I proved that was the very best place. Martin T's idea which I still don't fiully see the logic for, but who cares if it works !
Then the power amp
Then the deck or CD
Seems to be the favoured places
Go for a bank of unswitched sockets on the wall rather than a block if you can
Try it in each position for your own satisfaction
I'm going to try an Ultimate on a low end system the other half has and see what happens. Don't hold your breath though :)

I think I would agree about the block. I already have all my wall sockets unswitched. As already mentioned I run two mono block power amps so that's a non-starter. I rarely use cd these days as my music is now all ripped to a NAS, hence the streamer suggestion. As for my TT, it has already been suggested on a previous thread that I don't touch the weedy two-core exiting the unit, until I use an external power supply, which may be a project along with the bearing next year, as funds are tighter now that I have retired and am no longer in the trade.:violin::violin:

I am sorry when I decided to go against my instincts after reading a thread like this (how amazing a cable was) I thought buy one and try it, be open minded. Cable from MCRU arrives goes in system no difference whatsoever.
That's not to say you guys don't hear the things you do in your systems but in mine MCRU cable make no difference. It's still there. I don''t expect the cable to sound different and it isn't, saves a load of dosh and time.

Are you running from an unswitched socket direct to the hifi item ?
Are you running from an unswitched socket direct to the hifi item ?
Lots of possible variables: spur rather than ring main; fuse box rather than breakers; extensions or mains blocks being used; terrible mains bourn noise or interference etc. Every system is differently comprised and assembled; if Alan hears no difference then that's a valid finding. Which is why we keep saying borrow/try one first if you can.

Nothing wrong at all, I see no reason why a bit of mains wire will make a difference over a low current thing like a HiFi. I don't expect it to be different and it isn't, saves a whole load of cash and time. You guys who just trust your ears are enjoying them cables great. I trust mine and hear nothing.
Signal cables that is IC and speakers will make a difference due to their construction differences on low voltage signals, 240v is another story.
Enjoy your purchases Mike.

Hi David, you've peaked my curiosity, what the hell are special mains leads for MonoX's. I currently use a pair of Chord Co. Powerchord's plugged into an Isotek Orion 6 way which also uses a Powerchord. If you are suggesting that your leads would be an improvement may I borrow a pair so that I can put that to the test? I must say that I have never seen them mentioned on the Cyrus Unlimited forum on which I am also a member.

A standard cable can supply ten amps. Whatever it is you hear its unlikely to be current delivery that is the issue
Guys - this isn't meant to be another long drawn out argument for/against power cables. I've stated my case for a particular product and you can either try out an Ultimate for yourself or go about your business, it doesn't bother me much. I'm not here to try to sell you anything, however this is an enthusiasts' site and I'll wax lyrical if I so choose :)
Richard - a standard cable can supply 13A. It doesn't necessarily do it with low impedance, however, especially if you start looking at transient edges where Fourier analysis will tell you that there's quite a lot of high frequencies in there. Enough - I don't profess to understand the mechanism by which one power cable sounds better than another, I can simply tell you that this is the best I've heard, and I've heard a lot of cables including some much more expensive ones (which I used to own).
Another long drawn out mains cable argument in the offing me thinks...
Nope - not on my watch! :nono:

Hey. Cut me some slack. I haven't knocked martins views on this mains cable or started an off thread debate. In response to a measurement discussion the others were having I pointed out an obvious measurement point. And whilst I'm here kettle leads with a notch are rated to 13 amps. Standard iecs for hifi only the 10 amps I quoted. None of which need prevent martin from enjoying what he is hearing.
My comments weren't aimed solely at you, Richard. You just chipped in when the thread had already, as Dave (Thing Fish) said 'decended into the usual sniping and digging about mains cables'.
They were aimed at everyone whose posts here contributed to the above situation. Alan S has a particular penchant for 'poking' those who can hear the differences made by using 'fancy mains cables', whenever he sees an opportunity to do so, just because he can't hear what those people can, and it has to stop. He is also not alone in that respect.
It's very important on this forum that anyone who wants to eulogise about or express their pleasure/excitement about the effect of their new mains cables (or anything else related to improving their hi-fi system), can do so without folk 'raining on their parade', as it were.
Now I know that Martin is a big boy and can look after himself, but the behaviour I'm referring to above sends out the wrong message on AoS, which must always be remembered is primarily a subjectivist forum, and it may prevent others, not as thick-skinned as Martin, expressing their delight or posting their impressions of the improvements a new mains lead (or whatever) has made to their system - and I simply will not allow that.
As I've said before, we don't gag people here, so if anyone wants to be as critical as they like (within the boundaries of respect and decency) about the efficacy of mains cables, then ensure that it is done either on a thread started specifically for that purpose, or on one already started by someone else, relating to that topic, and NOT on a thread such as this.
I do hope that I've made myself clear and do not have to issue bans to offenders (which I will do in future, if this happens again), in order to get the message across about the kind behaviour that is expected here.

Alan, I know that you haven't used the term 'fancy mains cables', hence why I put it in inverted commas. I used it simply as a generic term to describe what is considered by some as 'foo' (those who feel that simple 'kettle leads' are good enough to power their equipment), which, based on your comments to date on this forum about the matter, is a category you appear to fit into. In that respect, I could've also used the term 'foo mains leads', even though, to my knowledge, you haven't used that term yourself either.
Therefore, I'm not accusing you of the above. Furthermore, I also know that you don't comment on every single mains cable thread, but you do turn up on a few of them, and it's always to say the same old thing (that you can't hear any difference with using audiophile-designed mains cables) [that description is mine, not yours]. I'm sorry, but whether you realise it or not, you do come across as having a bit of a bee in your bonnet about this subject, and so seem to enjoy being the voice of dissent.
Now that's absolutely fine on a general thread about mains cables, where you're entitled to your opinion the same as anyone else, but NOT on a thread such as this where someone has purchased some new mains cables and wants to relate to like-minded enthusiasts the details of their experience. In that situation, the only comments that are acceptable are those either congratulating the OP on his purchase, perhaps by someone who already uses the same cables and knows how good they are, or by those who want to know more details about them, with a view to buying some themselves.
It is NOT acceptable for anyone to 'thread crap' the discussion by adding input that has nothing to do with what the OP wants to discuss - and judging by his comments, it is clear that Martin didn't appreciate such input. If you want to tell everyone about how much a waste of money and how ineffective/unnecessary you think 'fancy mains cables' are, then start a separate thread about it. It's as simple as that, which is all I am asking you (or anyone else) here to do.
It is essentially the same rule as we apply on private or trade sales threads. It is applied simply as a matter of courtesy and to ensure that the best interests of the OP are met.
Marco.

Really? So if (as has happened in the past) I buy and try something and don't like the results, does that mean I'm not allowed to express a contrary opinion to someone who has had positive results with the same item?
Nope. It goes without saying that if someone else has a contrary experience of the same product being discussed, then they are perfectly entitled to share that experience. For example, if you had tried the new Ultimates and found them to be crap, you could of course say so here.
What isn't permitted on threads like this is someone thread-crapping the discussion by posting their negative comments about 'fancy mains leads' in general, which is contrary to the topic that the OP wants to discuss.
We're not trying to gag anyone here, Joe; merely ensuring that things are fair and discussions are kept in their appropriate place :)
Marco.
This thread should be moved to strokes of genius then it will not be classed as "another" mains cable debate. :)
I know where you're coming from, dude, but I think Martin wanted to differentiate between this thread and his proper review of the new Ultimates in SOG, so we'll leave things as they are.
Btw, at a later stage I'd like to have a listen to one of the new cables and compare it what I have now, and if I perceive it as better, I'll have my existing Ultimates upgraded to MK III status, and pay you for the privilege. Anyway, I'll contact you when I have time to arrange that :)
Marco.

I don't think you'll be disappointed, Marco.
