Well It's that time of year again and we've just been out and got our first haul of Penny Bun Ceps. We found a place a couple of years ago but only ever take enough for those in the house that like mushrooms and we leave the rest for others.

This is a picture of some mushrooms that were growing on the little raised herb bed thingy we have at the side of the house. The cones are from the coast nearby and the 'shrooms only grew on them. I thought they were quite interesting.

despite not liking to eat mushrooms I find them fascinating and I fully expected at the age of 16/17 becoming a mycologist ...well that never happened:-)

Pleas epost pics of 'shrooms you find out and about this Autumn

When I was much younger I did have a penchant for the magic variety. 30 of them makes a great system upgrade - you really do hear the musicians 'playing together'. Sadly it's now illegal. How can nature be illegal?

I have always liked a nice fresh 'puff-ball', very tasty. Needs to be fresh and young. We would pick in a wild area a few mins walk from the house, carry on walking to the woods and cook up there and then with butter and garlic, toast some nice thick bread, nice breakfast:thumbsup:

Oooh yes, ages since I've had puffball.
We like to cut 'em up into inch thick stakes and fry them for breakfast. Just like eating a really good mushroom souffle and fantastic with good dry cured bacon!

Lots of them around here but I'm too nervous to collect, as I am never quite sure if they are Toadstools masquerading as Mushrooms..

The first Autumn we were here we went out mushrooming not really knowing what we were looking for but had a little handbook. We came across lots of shrooms thaat weren't edible and then a purple looking thing. Mrs HP said "If that's edible then I'll eat my wellington"...turned out to be an Amethyst Deceiver which is apparently edible - she still hasn't eaten her wellington!

I used to take a small hand book out too, but even with the book i just was never fully sure. There would only be a minute difference between some edible and poisonous mushrooms.

I saw a TV programme, last year, I think, which showed edible and unpleasant. Sometimes the differences were tiny and some of the ugliest, nastiest looking fungi were the most highly prized mushrooms. I haven't the confidence to try.

In days past when my work took me out to the woods in the early mornings, I often got a chance to find some of the few I know - giant puffballs, chantarelles and wood blewits. When I lived in Sussex, I learnt to look at the old sites of fires on the chalk downland where if we were lucky, we used to find morels.

I considered eating some of those at one stage - 35 years ago:lol::mental:

Research put me off the idea though;) It is hallucinogenic. It is also not good for you.
