I have the DVD-A of Hotel California and can't rip it in 24/192 for some reason. Files always end up corrupted. I have tried using Foobar and DVD Extractor software. Can anybody shed some light on what the problem might be?

You're not holding your mouth right?

Have you installed the DVD-Audio Decoder?

Can you get the DVD-A to play in Foobar?
If you've got the plugins installed then you should be able to play the stuff straight off the disc.
One thing to note is that using the play CD function won't do it - you need to navigate to "add files" and find the location on your computer.
The files should then appear in Foobar.

The thing to bear in mind with Foobar is that if it can play it, it will convert it.

Done all that. The 24/192 files play but there's no sound. The rest play OK. I just can't seem to do anything with the higher resolution files.

What won't they play on?
Can you fill in some details of your playback setup please?

This is not going to be much help, but here goes. It is simply that I have successfully ripped about a dozen DVD-As. It was a few years ago and I'll be danged if I can remember the software I used. I recall it was freeware or trialware. It was not foobar. I would end up with 24bit 48Khz files. I remember it being important to choose correctly what to rip. In my case it was the two channel part of the DVD-A that I needed. So I am sure the correct software is out there, and hopefully a little better than when I did it.

How do I rip using Foobar, I can't find an option to do it anywhere in the menus? I have the Audio CD Writer plugin installed btw

Insert CD.
Go to File/Open CD - Rip is one of the option that becomes available to you.

It was probably DVD-Audio Extractor.
Foobar does the job just as well, but DVD-Audio Extractor has a more straightforward user interface.

I have the DVD-Audio disc of Hotel California.
And I got to grips with ripping DVD-Audio stuff in Foobar quite a while ago.

When you open the files on the disc you'll find that there is a hotch-potch of surround sound files and stereo files - only the stereo ones are 24/192.
Highlight those, right click on the mouse and select the convert/... option.
You'll find all you need there.

If something cannot work then usually you get a message saying so.
Most times that you get a message it will be because you haven't installed appropriate plugins or pointed the process at an appropriate converter. If you want to rip to MP3 then you need a LAME source to point the process at.
Similarly if you want to rip to FLAC then you need to have FLAC.exe installed and you need to point the process in its direction.

Chris,

That's precisely what I have done. Files produced don't play. Same happens when I use DVD Audio Extractor. I think the DVDA could be faulty.

What did you rip the files to and what do you play them back on?

Have you tried DVD Audio Explorer?

Google it.

Freeware, not updated since 2008. Always worked for me. Will rip 24 /192

I just downloaded it and it works just fine.
That's one that I didn't know about. :)

Let's hope Bernie spots this. If it doesn't work for him then he's probably right that his DVD-A is faulty. Hope not.

Can't see the disc being faulty.
Damaged maybe, but not faulty.
Depends on whether it was S/H or not.

CD rot had been recognised before these discs were made, and appropriate steps taken.

What did you rip the files to and what do you play them back on?

Ripped to flac on a synology NAS, played through a Squeezebox Touch with EDO app.

The problem isn't that I can't rip the files. It's that they are only small in size and won't play when ripped. I have only been able to rip the down sampled versions in 24/96.

Did you rip the files to WAV?
EDO allows the playback of 24/192 FLAC files, not WAV files.
Which DAC are you using on the Squeezebox Touch?

It convert everything to flac. Sorry, I should have said. Tried DVD Audio Explorer and get Same problem, with huge log file full of errors. End result is a split second of static for each song and a file size of about 139k for Hotel California as an example.

DAC is Bushmaster Mk1, which will handle 24/192. It's a problem with the ripping process, not the replay chain. Same result using Foobar, DVD audio extractor and DVD audio explorer, so it's not a software problem either. Could it be a problem as PC is running Windows XP and it's sometimes pretty flakey?

Stratmangler

I dunno what else to suggest
I was running a machine with XP on it when I ripped the few DVD-A discs I have, and those rips are fine. It isn't an OS issue.

How small is "small in size"? My 24/192 file sizes for the main track "Hotel California" is 246MB alone. The whole CD comes in at 1.7GB.
If your ripped files sizes are much smaller than that then you got a problem with the ripping process I reckon.

There is content on the disc that can be played on regular DVD players, not that I've ever accessed it.
Most standard DVD audio is 16/48.
As Stan has said, the DVD-Audio in 24/192 files are massive, but the standard audio would be quite small.
