If you like nature Hampstead Heath is great it goes from pretty wild woods to a typical English park just depending what areas you explore
If going to London lots of shows and music and would really suggest that you make the most of that opportunity. http://www.visitlondon.com/
http://www.viewlondon.co.uk/ and are good resources but also suggest you buy a magazine called Time Out it has lots of listing around events
London has some amazing cuisine from anywhere in the world, from good value to Michelin 3 star
The London eye or the Shad give a great view of London
The Tate modern has some amazing art

Greenwich Park, The Royal Observatory (interactive exhibits for children whilst you ponder over how a carpenter made the most beautiful chronometers that solved the problem of longitude at sea) and if your fancy takes you that way the Cutty Sark.

London Science Museum http://www.sciencemuseum.org.uk/ Entry is free and it'll be dry in there (but you'll need a month to see it all).

Some great suggestions already. I think we need to know if you have been to London before, what you and your family like, and more important what you dont like. Most people who visit tent to stay central, as nice as Greenwich park, Hampstead heath are, for most who visit they are to much of a hassle to travel to ( even though they are not, they just take time etc). Southbank always good, type of place you can spend several hours. Loads of stuff to do, see and eat there. Entertainment for adults and kids.

Try Camden market, it can get very busy there, but you can eat, take a walk along the canal, buy music etc. The Southbank i already suggested is good as the walkway along the thames takes in the London eye, the palace of westminster, southbank center/ BFI, tate modern, Skateboard park, the globe to name but a few... you can also take a trip on the thames from the southbank, Southbank 4min walk from Waterloo station. Looks like a british food festival on there too.

I have always wondered why our foreign visitors hit London & think that's what the UK is all about! tbh i would not wish the place on any visitor  I think i can safely say i will never ever go there again..

I was unfortunate to be lumbered with a young Russian on holiday, the first thing he blurted out was everything you would find in London even thought that everyone eats Fish & Chips  As you can understand im glad to be back home.

The funny thing about central London is that over 70% of all the people you see in the shops, streets, tube etc are tourists.

:) Yes, i Think that it is the case in most capitol Citys around the Globe
Its the same in the ones i have been to

But still there is more History and Museums food shopping Music in the capitol Citys etc... Than in the suburb
I live in A Danish Suburb, and i Would not reccomend any one to visit it, it is sooo Booring :mental:

Best regards

Architecture - you need to check out St Paul's Cathedral. Tower of London is worth a visit too.

Food - try The Bell on Fleet Street, they do traditional English or an acceptable steak and reasonably priced. Also The Cheshire Cheese pub is worth a visit, re-built 1667 but there has been a tavern on that site since Roman times. Dickens used to drink there. History coming straight out of the walls at you.

Yes very true Nikolaj, my point being dont ask anyone for directions , as most of the people you see are not from central London.:), if you like a glass of wine, then try Gordons, between embankment tube station and charing cross station. the oldest bar in London, the old home of Samuel Pepys (1680).

Hi , as has been mentioned Greenwich is a must , so much there , the park with the observatory , the cutty sark , the dome is a short walk lots for kids to do then get on the cable car for a trip over the Thames with some great alternate views . A fantastic museum is sir john soames house in Lincoln's inn fields you won't of seen anything like it it's a hidden gem. Also a great place for kids to let off steam is Corams fields a Victorian city playground where only adults with kids are allowed in , great place for your kids to play with some inner city londoners . Have a great visit and enjoy :)

Hi Nikolaj,

Here are my suggestions based on family travels with 8 year old son …

London Eye - make sure you book in advance!
London Aquarium - my son loves this - it's next to the Eye …
Science Museum - lots of interactive stuff for kids
Natural History Museum - kids go crazy for the dinosaur exhibit
Boat Trip - down the Thames to Greenwich - from there go to Cutty Sark / Royal Maritime Museum and then walk up hill to observatory.
Tower of London
London Zoo - worth a visit for the kids
HMS Belfast and Imperial War Museum - great for adults and kids alike!
St Pauls Cathedral - walk up to the Whispering Gallery and then right up to the top to get amazing views over London
Grant Museum of Zoology - not many people know about this - 67,000 specimens - as long as your kids aren't squeamish!!

Hope you have a lovely time.

No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford."

St Pauls, Westminster Abbey and take in a stage show. Don't forget to sit on the giant Kitty Kats in Trafalgar Sq then stroll down for a pint at the Sherlock Holmes - you'll love it.

I generally hate cities, but I love London.

If you like jazz visit Ronnie Scott's http://www.ronniescotts.co.uk/
or Dean Street Pizza Express http://www.pizzaexpresslive.com/jazzlist.aspx saw the late Tommy Tedesco and the late Shawn Lane here two of the greatest guitar players I seen live

Ronnie Scotts good, but buy a drink some other place first. I was there the other week, £ 4.50 for a small bottle + £ 2.00 service charge on top. Fortunately my mrs was reviewing a gig at pizza express, great small venue. I cant get over the cost of things, we got in for nothing, but the tickets would have been £30.00 each  The best place for Jazz is a place called the hideaway http://www.hideawaylive.co.uk/ about 40mins from central London . Jazz cafe in Camden good too, but all sorts of music there not just Jazz.

John

Jazz cafe is great John, just 2mins from from Camden tube. I havent been for a long time now, think it was either Georgie Fame, or Lee Scratch Perry '. small venue, standing, but there are seats in the tiny restaurant upstairs. There you can still view the bands.

Not sure the kids will appreciate it, but my favourite food and architecture fix in London is lunch at https://www.stjohngroup.uk.com/smithfield/ (I could eat the lambs tongue, bread and green sauce all day!) followed by a wander around the Barbican (proper hardcore brutalism).
