Best British Blues band today?

This was going nowhere on the "such fun" valve discussion thread, so it needs another thread of its own. I am trying both to promote my friends band, but also get enough interest to get a vinyl lp produced of their most recent album "Killing it" and maybe their new (not yet released) album.

My avatar is the band, with my mate Joe in the front. Since I last posted about them they have won a national blues competition, and as a prize flown to New Brunswick Canada, where they won that too. Just think how good they'd sound on your HiFi!!

Not bad, a bit to clean sounding for me. I like my blues dirty. I will give the songs more of a play before i make my mind up. I feel from first listen that the singer good as he his, does not cut it for me.

The singer's voice sounds a bit like a 'gutsy' version of Keb Mo. Certainly 'dirty' enough for me; if you want something more dirty try Lightnin' Hopkins, or Furry Lewis.


However until they produce a complete CD that I can purchase, rather than downloads (I've only had a quick look on Amazon), they will remain unavailable to me.

Will watch them with interest - thanks for introducing them to us Richard

I can get you a CD - well recorded actually. Of course, what I would like to get us all is a vinyl LP. If I can get enough interest Iill take a chance on it and hope to sell them to the independent record shops too, but never having done anything like this before, I would appreciate as much support as possible. Pretty sure I could get the 24 bit master.

They are planning to record a new album in a single 2 week session soon - they have written and rehearsed it - big change from the way they used to work (new management). They are not "easy" and have quite a varied and often "odd" style, but they are awesome live. As I should be able to confirm in about 2 hours time. First time I will get to hear tracks from the new album.

Yup - he sure can play. There is just so much talent, so many good musicians out there playing for buttons in small venues. Get out and lap it up is my motto! However, my thread title for "best" was based on the guys winning both the British and the International "Battle of the Bands", the latter in New Brunswick Canada this year. So at least for this year, they have a claim to the title! :)

Update on my plans for a vinyl LP. I spoke to James last night, the drummer and technician, and he is very keen - so hopefully the band will do it. Amazing isnt it. I've known him fairly well for 6 years now, my wife better for longer (she has worked with him and his wife) and I didn't know he was an audiophile! Rega RP3 and Naim amps, but we won't hold that against him. On that basis, they will look at doing do a small run to try to sell through the record independants as well as their gig sales at normal prices. I am sure I could get an AOS special price of full cost (ie including post and packing). Not sure at the moment, but hopefully a tenner or less. I would love to have an LP of these guys so please let me know if any of you might too. Although "professional" (they all teach their instruments at local colleges) as a band they play for love, and whilst they would love to earn a living doing it, are just the local band.

(If you watch more, Dave is a killer trumpet player, Phil plays bass solos the like of which I have never heard, and Graham plays percussion and trombone as well as keyboards)

It will be "Killing It" not their first CD "Second Hand Tattoo" on which the production is frankly not as good. If Killing it can sell 100 LP's, I guess they might do it for their new album - for which they are going into the studio before Christmas.

Just let me know if this is your sort of thing, and you would be interested in an LP for a tenner. (No promises, but great hopes) :)

For my money the king of British Blues is Ian Siegel. Never heard of him? Not only is his work completely honest and commercially unadulterated he gave the best live performance I've ever seen; not as a considered show but for total emotional immersion in his playing and the delivery of his musical message. Absolutely spellbinding.

Judge for yourself if you can get to Bishop's Stortford or Gloucester, where David Migden & co will be supporting him - which is an endorsement of their talent in itself.

Ian falls into the gravely voice category. I was surprised by his lyric "what are they doing to those whores, daddy?" - and a little let down to hear on the album that it was actually "what are they doing to that horse, daddy?" :doh:

I recommended a friend in Helsinki see him when he was in town (at the time playing with Scandinavian drummer and bassist). Unfortunately the gig was ill conceived/ promoted and only 8 people turned up, including my friend and 5 of his - but Ian simply ignored this and gave 100% just as if it were a full house. The man just lives the Blues, well it certainly sounds that way.

Pretty decent stuff, well played etc....not sure it is quite the blues I am into but will have another listen later......might buy a high quality cd/vnyl if one comes out though as I like to help up and coming blues artists....
