I've been in IT now for 30 years, the first 15 as a DBA of various guises, but I probably pulled off my most seamless disaster recovery process today. :eyebrows:
Woke up this morning, the sky was bright...doh! it’s 7:30 and the SBox alarm hasn't worked, and I'm late for work...so I check the client, no connection, then the server (QNAP TS-119, single disk headless linux server) all red flashing lights etc.
I've been using my QNAP TS-119 as a source since May 2009 , with a Western Digital 1Tb caviar ‘green’ HDD, which had obviously gone the way of all hardware, the disk was spinning but no head activity. I suppose 4.5 years isn’t too bad for an HDD that’s been in use for several hours per day, every day.
Now for the good bit, apart from 2 backups of my FLAC collection (one at work, one at home) I’ve also been using QNAP’s Q-RAID disk mirroring function, it’s their own ‘batch incremental’ version of RAID for a single disk device. I just plug in an external HDD in a caddy every now and again in order to synchronise. But I’ve not actually tested this, so when I switched the disks it was with a little trepidation, and all fingers crossed.
It actually worked!!! A full recovery in about 15 mins, no need to spend hours rebuilding the system and copying over the FLAC library over…I’ve also waited for 24 hours before posting this, just in case! But all running perfectly again…
So 10 out of 10 for Q-RAID :)
