View Full Version : Eightiestastic new arrivals in my system…JVC M-L10 and P-L10
According to The Vintage Knob these were made 1981 to 1990.

They’re the kind of Japanese equipment I never saw back in the eighties, possibly because almost all remained in Japan. They are extremely well put together, and the power amp is massively heavy for its size – 28 kilos.

It has the endearing function of the meters illuminating in red on switch on, and changing to white when the relays click and the amp passes signal.

I also got a QL-Y66F turntable along with them, but that is “with the menders” just now. But from reading around the web I believe fairly stellar performance may be expected if some rudimentary modification is carried out.
I’d love to hear if any AOS members currently own, or have experience of these items!

Very nice, JVC [Victor] have made some very nice gear... I used to own a QL-A75 which was pretty good.
Got a QL-A7 I'm quite keen on

but the QL-Y66F looks to be on a whole different level
Mmm...tasty turntables both. I'd no idea that JVC had made such a range of desirable kit. Am I imagining it, or is JVC/Victor equipment not appreciated to the extent it deserves at the moment?
I realised I hadn't posted a picture of the P-L10 with the front flap down - ergonomically, I really like this way of tidying up the fascia and keeping your control settings off the radar of inveterate knob twiddlers.

It has two independent phone stages, MM and MC, and there are some loading options for MC on the back panel too. It's a really excellent disc stage, at least as dynamic and transparent as the Audio Innovations P2 it replaces, and orders of magnitude quieter. Also defeatable tone controls. All functions get illuminated from behind in colour on the mirrored strip that runs along above, again a really nice touch as legends are almost invisible until lit.
I held off describing the sound of the combination in my last post, but at the risk of rhapsodising, it is extremely good. Huge soundstage, grainless, filigree treble and the best bass definition and texture I've had in my system, easily surpassing the Krell KSL/KSA100 I once owned.
The person who sold these to me said his uncle, from whom they were a legacy, worked for JVC, and that these weren't available in Britain but were obtained as a special favour. Credible sales pitch, but the P-L10 does have a label on the back saying "sample". Any AOS members with long memories know if this is the case?
Lovely looking amps, I have heard an expensive JVC system from roughly the same era, it was very pleasant. That had the matching 3 way standmount speakers with 12 inch white bass driver - they must be very rare in the UK now.

They'd be those SK-1000 's....yes, if I ever see a pair, I want, I want. I bet they're seriously good.
Talking of speakers, at the risk of hijacking my own thread I collected some Urei 829 monitors today. More eightiestastica indeed. But maybe a separate thread's called for if there's any interest...hooked up to my workshop system I'm quite blown away - their size and ugliness is in inverse proportion to their sound quality. And they're very, very big, very, very ugly.
WAF is off the scale.

Hi Peter
Melbourne's just a wee bit far for me to pop round and hear what I'm certain is an awesome sound....sadly.
I totally concur with your description of the sound...my speakers are no slouches - very large and inert plaster lined cabinets, Tannoy golds, Silver crossovers, Decca ribbons. They now go down deeper than most subs, with total clarity, you'll know what I mean when I say "air" around the lowest notes - and image far, far better than my tweaked Leak stereo 20 ever did. Stereo 20 is an amp rightly renowned for its synergy with Tannoys, btw. And as you say, the JVC pairing is an almighty communicator too...you just can't stop listening, it seems almost disrespectful to the life size musicians who've obligingly taken up residence in your living room. But I'd LOVE to hear them driving the speakers they were undoubtedly designed for.
I can't understand why this amp combination isn't better known and of legendary status.
I get the turntable back in a week or two. Will keep you posted.
Very good to hear of another running this system,
Kind regards
Victor, did you go tothe hifi show? I've been to the last two, but had to miss this one.
