Hi Chaps


Picked one up this morning but have some trouble with it getting to play in stereo is it worth getting it serviced etc or can a drop of Switch cleaner do the do but got to work out how to the in the thing first. any suggestions :scratch:

All inputs work but only in mono..strange its not my din leads as there the ones i use with my quad 3 series

I sure i have connected the din connectors to speakers 1 left & right or is this wrong.

Hi

I have got the top off & cleaned the input switch with servisol super 10 cleaner. Tape input works on stereo. AUX & tuner are only working on one channel. This thing has been stored in a shed few spots of corrosion on the trans..the sound i have got from it sounds pretty promising might just take it to a engineer to give it the beans..

Still having a play with this when the L MONO is pushed in the left channel works but when pushed out it wont play is stereo on either AUX or Tuner input i dont need to adjust the levels on the bottom do it..the center channel works fine..

Maybe i could use tape input & run a splitter box from it tricky one..

Have read the Manuel as it came with one i see that i am connecting everything up correctly..

Anyone local to Bournemouth willing to have a look at it for me.

It's a total load of jobbies and needs to be disposed of to my museum IMMEDIATELY!!!!!!!!!

Caps in this generation of B&O seem to last decades and I reckon they should only be replaced if they've definitely gone off. The amp was designed primarily for 4 ohm loads and a then twelve year old example coped brilliantly with Sara's I remember - really good sound. That was over thirty years ago now, so some attention will be needed.

It's a fuggin' good-un this and well up to the best of the day. Get it working right and hang on to it. The tuner is reception and sonically fab too, as most B&O tuners actually are, but some don't go over 104MHz so local stations can't be received.

Its a nice piece so is it wise to try my Teac LS 8X mk2 on them or..

The condition has come up very nice with a bit of a clean..on the front panels & sliders

I wonder what you'll think of the Nytech receiver. We loved it accepting it had a looseness in presentation, rather than vice-like grip.

Sliders by ergonomics only. I think most of them are connected to rotary controls (old memory and I've never seen the innards of this one).

Aha, thats an interesting way to do it. I'll have to keep an eye out for one - Any idea what the Beomaster 3000-2 is like ? Looks similar but is a 40wpc receiver...

Well, firstly congratulations as you’ve bought yourself a very fine amplifier there, but commiserations as they can be a bit of a sod to get working! You are right to start with a cleanup of the switches but remember that there are more than just the ones on the front panel – there are a load underneath that select different input configuration options plus a whole loads of input level trimming potentiometers. These will need a squirt of Servisol as well and, if you’re really unlucky, the pots may need replacing.

Other than that, the amplifier has some big DC coupling capacitors between the preamp and power amplifier stages which may have dried out and there is also a large PSU electrolytic which can dry out or worse – the capacitor in my own Beolab 5000 actually started leaking and left a nice puddle of electrolyte on the table it was sat on! You’ll also need to check and set the 5V voltage rail and the output offset bias as these can drift with age and give odd symptoms. The bulbs for stereo and power indication are also prone to blowing and are 60V MES types, but RS Components still sell them.

Oh, and Dave - the controls are proper sliders and the Beomaster 5000 tuner DOES tune up to 108MHz!

Flip it over and take off the baseplate and you'll see the switches. Some of the pots are better accessed from above but, as the PCBs hinge out of the way, this isn't a problem. As I recall, there's only one that's a bit of a sod to get to.

well the right channel is working because it pops when i press "speakers 1" just is not making the connection on AUX or Tuner i have sprayed it with survisol cleaner. The bits i think need a do looks other wise quite tidy inside to be honest. I have been quoted £60 for a look & repair at B&O is it worth waiting till i have got the funds to take it in..Really getting to me now but hey ho!!

If they can repair it & give it a clean bill of health for £60 then thats a good deal but if its £60 just to look at it then no IMO...

Only you can decide that Dan... I've done a Google search & faulty/untested they sell for between £30-£100, working/tested they sell for between £300-£500.

Still deciding is it worth it if not maybe up for sale very shortly...

Hi Chaps

Good news its now up & running with a good clean of the pots & a NEW DIN cable all is fine. Because it was just plugging a cable into female RCA & not making the full connection to the right channel. But got to say WOW this thing sounds good.
Cleaned up well i think..
