Well indeed, the ears don't really hear anything at all. They are sensors and it's the brain that assembles the input and creates a 3D soundstage from it. Much like it de-jitters the input from the eyes and makes a stable internal 3D image from them.
In years to come, maybe the likes of Nordost will be offering to re-wire people's brains to improve the sounds and images they create. The 'burn-in' process might be a tad painful though.
