I still listen to a Sony MDS-JA20ES MD player, both with minidiscs and used as a DAC for the SB Touch. I really can't seem to let go of this now obsolete technology as it's just so cool! I also use an MZ-RH1 portable quite regularly as a bedside rig.

The player seems to be well engineered, but would any newer DAC beat it for sound quality? I've never owned a separate DAC to compare it with, but would hate to think i've wasted money for a little or no improvement, especially as the Sony is in it's own right, a nice machine.

I used that exact deck in the same way as you. As you say, it's a very satisfying machine to use.

I found using it as a DAC with the SBT to be a difference over the naked SBT, a difference that I preferred. You'll have to spend a fair bit to get a marked improvement though (the usual sub £500 DACs will just be different flavours, not real improvements - take it from me, I've tried them all!).

Mine went as I don't have room for excess equipment. They're not worth a great deal (£100-130 perhaps?), so unless you need the space or you're desperate for the dosh I'd keep it.

Richard

I would keep it as resale values on MD players are low :(
