extremely enjoyable show today WELL worth a visit

david from MCRU has some really lovely goodies at good prices to start with, got some lovely 4mm mains cable at an excellent price and silver sleeves for crimping them and speaker cables [thought they only made copper]

high end cable had a system with the raidho c1 and a simple bel canto integrated with a bel canto cd2 and loads of expensive nordost cables . very natural and spacious sound. shows you can get good sound without spending too much on integrated amps

great to see gary [artless ] from cu and although I did not spot any others from cu I did spot Jeremy I think

the best room I thought was the gamut room with some 12k standmounts RS3 I think , gamut pre and monoblocks . the sound was spacious , natural and very involving

good to see tony from coherent there I the catalunya room with the ever brilliant belles vt-01 and belles amps with new speakers from Austria , the brodman series , very grand sounding and I wish tony good success with them

Kralk audio had a marvellous little standmonut the ATLPS1 which was superb value and had nicely made stands for £50 yes its not a typo .....50 quid !!!
they sounded even better with a transmission line stand bolted onto them . beautifully made in Yorkshire and tremendous value

the ever favourite music first baby was there with a reel to reel sounding good

lots to see , good parking and signage , chester audio who organise have much to be proud of

Hifinutt yeah those Gamut standmounts did it for me & Jon (Apogee refurbisher) and his brother. No deep bass but very spacious sounding in a 9 by 10m room.

Spent most of the afternoon socialising so looking forward to doing some proper listening tomoz.

Agree RE the Gamots, very good indeed. Other surprises of the show were that many exhibitors took more trouble this year with system matching and room treatment and it showed. Lots of superb sounds. Another great showing by Analogue Alchemy who's open baffle wonders remain deeply impressive and possibly for me tie for sound of the show. The Adams Audio active floorstanders used in the PS Audio room were also deeply impressive, and for £7.5K including power amps were a steal. They were in my top 3 sounds of the show. The £2.5K Maggies were making some great sounds in the Sound Foundations room and Chris was show casing possibly the blingiest and over engineered turntable I've ever seen...sounded ok too! Loads of photos for you Neil...can you ping me your email address so I can send them to you?

Paul, i thought the Analogue Alchemy reworking of Linkwitz's Orions sounded better than i've ever heard them at a show. They managed to get rid of that hollow bass they've suffered from in previous rooms. I like the little Gamuts, but not at 12k for off the shelf drivers. ;-)

Well TBH when I was in there this year they failed to shine for me. But last year they sounded very good.

I met one person determined to try and make a pair using said drivers. There was a similar pair there for £5K though but they wouldn't hook them up - the red ones below.

Apparently the 12K ones have a special coating that reduces distortion by 2/3rds. Ahem.

40K Clearaudio driving the 2.5K Maggie 1.7s. TBH, flimsy though Maggies may be and defo not as capable bass wise as an Apogee Duetta Sig, for £2.5K they were briliiant.

I did find the ADAM's eventually, Paul. Some of their more expensive designs really are good - e.g. the Tensor. IMHO a lot better than these but more money.

Basically agreed on all the other points you make. But we had to disagree with Jerry re the Studer/Nagra/Soulution/Focal room, with recording quality beyond those found elsewhere.

A few more from the Z:Axis room, NOT the TAD room. as the proprietor was keen to point out:D

MBL transport, TAD speakers, Concert Fidelity amps/DAC/preamp/phono.

Not really my cup of tea in terms of music selection, but I'm sure some (know at least someone) that liked the music and the reproduction. Not cheap gear - I think the speakers are £37K.

I agree with Simon as the re-working has brought more coherence to the bass for the Audio Alchemy OBs and your point about what people thought depended partly on what was playing Justin was spot on too.

I also agree RE the Focal JM Labs and the big reel-to reel...simply staggering realism although like many Focals I've heard, a little brightly lit but I could live with those! The TADs were good if you didn't mind the bottom octave was missing almost completely and the fact that they were £37K a pair...sorry, just not impressed at all with those. At that price, there's no excuse for not having a full range speaker.

Thanks for the great photos of the system and room, and great to meet you at long last.. Hope you enjoyed the weekend as much as we did, tiring - yes, but the responses we've had since have made it all well worthwhile.. Oh, and thanks for pointing out it was not the TAD room!

Like the update on the Ap's too, fantastic stuff.. keep em coming as and when you can..
