I'm also amazed Al. My vinyl source isn't that great but when I was down at Gordons and was listening to Sargent Pepper, I could hear the acoustics of the studio that Paul McCartney was in when doing his vocals.

Vinyl blows me away completely, especially when your system is on point. There are times when I am literally intoxicated and high on the pleasure of good music through a good system. I cant get enough, do it as much as I can and when I aint doin it I'm thinking about getting to doing it - Music = Joy !! :)

Agreed. In fact it is a little bit freaky! I still recall the day my brother had just bought a turntable and he had one record (A Night at the Opera). He told me it was stereo. I poo-pood him because I 'knew' you could not get two different signals from one groove! I overcame that little hurdle but to this day I am in awe at just how much information is contained in a wiggly line. I am also in awe at man's creativity in making the music and ingenuity at getting it to us.

Vinyl has always fascinated me, when you consider the complexity of building a musical instrument like a piano, violin, bassoon, guitar etc....

then take the expertise of the people playing those instruments in a style and an expressive passion that can raise various emotions in all of us.

now consider a needle gliding down a microscopic valley of plastic, producing a tiny electrical signal that is boosted and sent to a vibrating paper cone (or other) in a box, trying to play all those instruments and the huge variety of human voices ALL AT THE SAME TIME!!!!!!!!:stalks:

getting sound from it at all is amazing, getting a discernible performance that can bring one to tears is just outstanding.

I know I'm stating the bloody obvious, but it's taking all that complexity into consideration that gives me the fascination and indeed the pleasure from playing vinyl. Long may it continue.

The pleasure I get from vinyl is sublime. Being of retirement age I have been playing records since I was 8 or 9 when my dad brought home a Dansette record player, ostensibly for my mum, but she didn't get a look in. I also remember the first 45 that I bought with my own Money, it was Cliff Richards "Living Doll" sad or what?

The tactile feel of vinyl still gives me goosebumps, unlike my streamer which I turn on, press few buttons and get music. It sounds very good but does not have the impact vinyl has. What nobody on this series of posts has said but I'm sure you understand is that simply digital is not (yet) as good, dynamic or involving as analogue sound from vinyl IMHO.:)

It is not black magic chaps.......

What you are falling in love with is the compression.....let me say that again so as you do not think I am mad.....COMPRESSION....that has to be applied during the mastering process in order that your needle is not quite literally skyrocketed northward out of your groove on a loud transient during playback.

Vinyl sounds very good indeed.....it has manifold problems not least of which is the incredible wow caused if your centre hole is even MARGINALLY off-centre. It always was and still is mastered from very high end formats.

It was and is a very good distribution format......the sound you hear is down to the mastering process.

I'm picture editing one of our national newspapers tonight (don't ask, it pays the bills) So this afternoon I decided to have a listening session, to lift the spirit a bit :) I looked at the CDs I get loads to review and I keep the ones I like. I also looked at the Mac server, which is online for Spotify Etc., but decided to go with old style quality and turned to the vinyl wall for some old style quality. I started with a jumble sale find, 50ps worth of Neil Young original pressing German release, "After the Gold Rush", a quick go on the RCM and it was ethereal. Every nuance of the recording and a tangible image, it's a hackneyed phrase, but he was in the room. I followed this with 1975's The Flock some Ella Fitzgerald on Pablo and some direct cut Beethoven sonatas from Nimbus by Bernard Roberts, anther jumble sale find two box sets Vols 2 & 3 out of 4, cosyt me £1. I love this 100+ year old, out of date, dead technology...... VINYL ROCKS :) :) :)
