Speaker Boxes for Project

Can anyone recommend a good pair of two way speaker boxes for a project?

I have just acquired some old Genisis tweeters - that, from memory, have a very smooth and sweet sound. These are somewhat unique being packed in oil (which works as a kind of heat/vibration sink) - so they will make an interesting experiment.

Ideally the boxes would be sturdy, look good and come with a good woofer (or a size which is easily buyable).

Of course the 'boxes' can be a used pair of speakers - that may be best :)

Ah, so you bought them Stuart. I saw them on eBay. Not sure what you mean by "packed in oil", is that just ferrofluid in the coil gap?

Speak to Shane (southall-1998) may still have his 'full range speakers' in boxes, they'd probably be about the right size cases and they were for sale. He's in London too.

Actually, the back of the tweeter is a square (clear) plastic box of thick oil - i cant find clear picture that shows the back(most models have the box covered), from memory the 'oil' looks like thick grey grease.

you can see it here in the picture - showing it leaking out - probably these were seriously over driven to heat the oil to the temperature to run out like that. (notice the waxy seal around the tweets?)

I have a pair of two way speaker cabinets you can have.I paid a ten pounds for them on ebay.
If you would like to cover the cost of the purchase price there yours.
They are cut out for a volt mid bass unit and a dynaudio esotar tweeter the cabinets have been professionally sprayed in dark metallic Gray and are very heavy.

Yes that is the same stuff - i didnt know it was magnetic, i thought it was just thick oil - but i guess that makes sense. this stuff fills the box behind the tweeter -

Bernie, do you have any pictures you could share? How big are the woofer holes? (for 8 inch or other size driver?)

The mid bass opening is for a 12 inch unit.

The cabinets were made by a company called Wellard speakers the front of speaker is five layers of 18mm mdf sandwiched with lead the rest of the cabinets are three layers sandwiched with lead the back of the speaker cabinet has a recess to fit a power amp if you want to make them active.
As I have said these are a heavy speaker. I have heard these units with a volt mid bass unit and a dynaudio esotar tweeter the sounded truly awesome.

I have specific tweeters in mind and i would like to see if they will cover the whole hole...

I checked the opening for the tweeter it's 5 1/2 inches 14 cm

Only just seen this - I have a pair of Mordaunt Short Pageant II cabinets in the loft with matching grilles if they are of interest you can have them for 'owt ? Bass driver cutout is for 8" [DSB208/B200 chassis] & IIRC the original tweeter had a square faceplate... Cant remember though !

I'll dig them out if your interested...
