........ to my Brother in law and his wife.

The mind boggles at surviving each other for that length of time. My wife and I have been married 10 years now, not sure I'm going to be around for another 40 years but one can but try.

Anyway, I thought I'd knock out a couple of Celtic Luvvie Duvvie Goblets for them. Apparently, the legend goes that if ever the rings on the cups get broken...............I'm sure you can guess the rest.

Strange wood to have chosen really. Its yew, which is one of the most poisonous woods around:eek:. However, its well sealed with melamine lacquer on the inside, so if they should decide to drink to the next 50, they won't join those Druids who used to see visions before they snuffed it after drinking out of yew cups.

PS. Its a hell of a job stretching those rings over the cups:eyebrows:

Captive rings are fun aren't they? It's tricky for an amateur like me to get that little tiny ridge on the inner circumference finished perfectly but not so bad with a timber like Yew, I found, so good choice!

Chris, I assume you finish the rings the easy way?? No granny sucking eggs but hopefully, you just tape some abrasive to the stem and can then sand the inside of the rings - with the lathe running of course!. By twisting them, you can get just about the whole inner surfaces clean. Mind you, polishing them is fun, you end up with very shiny finger tips!!

Nice thought and a nice gift to give , something NOT off the shelf and made personally is far far better in my opinion

Aha, another can of worms. Is perfection possible?? This has been argued about extensively in woodworking circles for a long time. I am a great believer in good enough for the circumstances. This normally means doing the best that I can but 'perfection'? I suspect that's for others.
