Is anyone on here modding or building a nice low cost (sub £300) DAC?

I have modded several Dacs, one being a cheap Chinese Dac board from ebay that was the subject of a long thread on Rock Grotto some years ago. Sounds as good as sub £300 commercial dacs and cost about £50. If you wanted to add an enclosure of course the end cost will be more.

Yes...got a DAC project on the go. Haven't had time to progress it but intend using a Sabre chip DAC, building my own enclosure and wiring in a power supply and switch. Should be sub £300 when done.

DIY projects like this can be a pleasure to get involved in during the cold winter months. But cost should not be the objective. Otherwise you might as well go and buy a ready made DAC.

I assume you mean a sub £300 DAC from all those years ago. I very much doubt it would come anywhere close in quality to a present day DAC. I listened to a sub £300 DAC and a Weiss DAC that cost ten times as much. No contest. The Weiss has fallen well behind the times and can't hold its own with the more modern day sub £1K offerings.

Hi Stan, I think that I am "Quids In" as they say, due to the fact that I have cloth ears:D and haven't got any bloody idea if what I am listening to is any good:mental:

But seriously, I have an Audiocom kit modded Dacmagic 2i, a LiTe Dac Ah, a QED Digit reference, a recent Dacmagic, A Beresford 7510 (modded) and the little Chinese number. Out of all this lot the old Dacmagic sounds the best......to my buggeredlugs.
