Ipod sounds like a record and not in a good way:)

Hi guys hoping someone can help I'm at my wits end LOL, Over the past couple of days I've noticed that my ipod is making a low popping sound when playing music. I have tried a number of thing to try solve it as I wasn't sure what was the cause at first ie amp,dac,speakers,cables, but I've think I've narrowed it down to the ipod. The sound it makes is like when your playing a record with the little pops and ticks you here. Anyone any ideas? I know get rid of it and go back to a turntable might spring to mind:lol::lol: but I would like to get it sorted out.

If the track was copied from a record if will record the clicks and pops

However you could try cleaning the ipod on a RCM

Hmm that is a bummer

Does it happen with headphones directly with the iPod/iPhone ? If yes the it is internal to the iPod and probably it's back to apple to be fixed

If it does not happen on headphones then it might be your dock or dac- and the first suspect might be the power supply, try switch that

I have had lots of iPods and iPhones and iPads - and any problem I have had I just take it back to the apple store and they have just handed me a new one - amazing service! It didn't even matter what country I bought it in!

LOL they've been loaded on from CD or itunes only.

That's the only thing I haven't tried the headphones I'm waiting for my girfriend to get home as I'm not sure were they are. I've tried the ipod direct to the dac on its own and then in the dock without the dac but it still does it both ways:( I'll report back once I've tested the headphones:)

Just had a quick google search and it seems like I'm not the only one with this problem typed in (my ipod popping when playing) and quite a few people are having the same issue:( just off on a bigger search see if I can come up with anything, I knew I should have kept my gyro dec:mad:

Just a thought, but do you have any other source you could try, just to be sure it's a source issue. Even a Playstation or DVD player and a CD might answer it for you. I hope you get it sorted easily.

Hi Andrew yes mate I tried the DVD player with a CD and it was ok so that rules the amp and speakers out:)

Hi Jason. I did a bit of reading and it seems to be a known IPod issue. Some people are reporting that it has cleared when they update the OS to whatever Apple's latest IOS is (IOS7?) Worth a go, I suppose. Some have also had a result with a full reboot, but that's probably more hassle.

Well tried the ipod alone with headphones and no popping.

so tried the ipod in the dock, still popping
tried the ipod direct to the dac with no dock, still popping
tried the ipod, dock, and dac still popping
tried my amp with cd to check the amp speakers cables and there's no popping.

I would try the software update earlier mentioned and if that does not work take it back to apple

It seems the popping is not coming from the headphone jack - but instead from the docking jack side - not sure why.

As a last test to confirm this - you could borrow an iPod from a mate and try it it in your system - but it sounds like the iPod

If your iPod is less than 3 yrs old they may just replace it - especially if it is a known issue - make sure all your files are backed up!

As a plan B - you could just use the headphone out direct to the amp ...

I have NEVER had the receipt when i went into an apple store, they base the warrantee age on the serial number/manufacturing date i guess.


If they could verify the problem (or if it was a documented), and they could not fix it, they just gave me a new one! It has happened to me twice, once with an ipad and once with an iphone. (my wife and i have several apple products each...)

One time they were able to fix a problem with a wipe, reboot and data reload - it took about 30 minutes


You should book your service time in advance - you can do it online at apple.co.uk . That way you have a dedicated person waiting for you!

You don't even have to buy an expensive one - a cheap as chips one supplied with a printer will do ;)
