List possibilities! Nothin past the 70's cos it goes without saying!
I goes first THE WHO {Sell Out} However i cannot get it to sound right in Digtal Stereo or Mono, such a brilliant fuzzy..
Excellent idea for a thread André. It's sure to provoke controversy!
Give me a little time to think about my reply; though your suggestion of The Who with 'Sell Out' is a good start.

There are many who although different were just great. I don't think you can just have one 'best' at all.
I mean, who is to judge who's the best out of maybe Frank Zappa and The Mothers of Invention, The Beatles, Crosby Stills Nash & Young, King Crimson, The Doors, Ozric Tentacles, Jefferson Airplane, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, Bob Dylan and The Band, The Patti Smith Group, Cream, Spirit, Fleetwood Mac, Journey, Rush, Wishbone Ash, Hawkwind, Pink Floyd, etc., etc., etc.
Just so much great talent. There is NO single best!
(I'm sure Andr'e is going to mention ELP, but I'm sorry, much as I liked Greg Lake with KC, I just don't like 'em. ;))

I completely agree with this.

To put it into perspective, I couldn't even say which was the best of the Zappa bands, never mind the rest of 'em!
Lots of great bands
Zep awesome live band
Mahavishnu Orchestra Took jazz rock to new heights
King Crimson
Sabbath
Thin Lizzy Love the twin guitar attack I tend to prefer Scott and Brian on guitars
Rush were a fav from this period and so was UFO Both live albums are classics
Loved the first Montrose album classic hard rock
But to hard to pick a best

Hard to argue with Zepp, Who, Beatles, Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, but I think Guns N Roses need to be up there too.

That's cheating Geoff. You've listed a fair few of the main suspects - but I think we have to choose one.
I'm struggling. I'm known as a Pink Floyd boy, and still struggling to do a credible "Shine on" solo on my trusty 'lectric, would have to be sore tempted by Cream, and want to toss Genesis into the pot too. But for a bit of fun, and based on a particular criteria - on the word of the Bass player of an amazing band I roadied for ("The Grandads" - at the time I was doing their sound engineering, the youngest was the guitarist at 57, and the "senior" Chris on drums, had supported The Beatles)

Trying to choose one band as 'the best'? You may as well ask which is 'the best album', there can be no conclusive answer. Too much good stuff and too many great bands.
The Eagles? No. They were talented and musically accomplished, no doubt. but their music didn't do a lot for me. I much preferred Joe Walsh's offerings when he pursued his solo career.
That's past the 70's not allowed :)

There's one hugely influential band nobody has mentioned as far as I'm aware. The Moody Blues, who were truly massive in the late sixties, early seventies and did some wonderful stuff. I think people have forgotten how regarded they were.

I aint forgot. The first three {Deram} albums are absolutly fantastic in my eyes..

For me I think the entries so far are 'all the best bands' I can only prioritise in to my musical top list.
Lots of great Seventies bands but for me it has to be between The Jimi Hendrix Experience and Led Zeppelin. Zeppelin win on points.
If i can't have the smiths i'll go probably with the stranglers as all there best work was done by the late 70s or zappa or the doors.
Def Leppard every time for me :)

Who's Next has still gotta be my favourite album by a rock band. So I'm with Andre on The Who.
Yeah - Who's Next is frighteningly good. Although the only Who I've got is that one and also Live At Leeds. I should really expend that collection a bit.

Get the Deluxe edition it's the full concert with Tommy tracks
Rush.... all eras but especially demm 70's and early 80's. My fave band for many years till I discovered Tangerine Dream..I wont nominate them in fear of derision.

I love Rush All the Worlds A Stage 2112 A Farewell to the Kings and Hemispheres are my personal favs
Also love Moving Pictures and Clockwork Angels but not in the specified time period
Forgot to add Rainbow, Blue Oyster Cult, Kansas and Boston

My 2nd Nomination goes to The Doors, putting aside the two albums they made without Jim, Every single album they made prior to those were superb, Excellent recordings & Engineering. I personally cannot get enough of the band..

I'd give a vote for the Moodies - until you get to the poetry tracks: my cat could do better than that and at least he'd have the good sense not to put it on an LP. Almost as bad as "Voices of Old People" on Bookends.
Makes a digital playlist seem well worthwhile when you can just zap 'em out of it!
If I could take just one track to my box with me it'd be Floyd's Meddle. Heard it at the Birmingham Town Hall in 1971 (I think it was) - did go on a bit though..................

James Brown's back up that did the 69 - 72 period, they were completely smashing it out of the park all the way through that stretch.
