Gotta laugh, the biggest mod T.E ever did to the original A400 was to add a DC servo it was suddenly a giant killer... Pioneer put a DC servo in the A400X as standard & everyone preferred the original without one

I only heard one [A400] for the first time recently & in standard form its pretty average but I cooked up some mega mods I haven't seen anyone else do which really transformed it :eyebrows:

Hi James,

I've had a few, including both at the same time, about a year ago. I have to say, I much preferred the A400x. The differences weren't subtle either. The "x" was just more musical, had better timing and a far more tuneful bass. The original sounded coarse and flat footed in comparison.

Others may differ, but for me you're after the right amp.

In stock form the A400X is superior

I reckon £80 is probably about right. If you'd got one for fifty all the better. At least you aren't after the A400 which fetches more money again :)

Good luck and I hope you enjoy it.

Also worth keeping an eye out for the models 'A-301, A-401 & A-501' They all use exactly the same internals as the A400 but have [bypassable] tone controls... Can usually pick them up for between £20-£40 ;)

Now I really didn't know that. They must be amongst the biggest bargains around at that price!

I discovered it whilst looking for a replacement volume pot for an A400... behind the A400's aluminium fascia is a plastic panel with all of the holes pre drilled for the controls on the 301/401/501. They literally ripped out the tone controls & fitted a different fascia for us gullable Brits

I reckon you've already started a trend with this. I've passed said items in Cash Convertors many times available for peanuts.

Cheers for the insight. I might try a couple bi-amped. Won't exactly break the bank ;)

Hi

As promised i have been spending a few hours with the amp today & i must say i like it very much warm smooth sound & its fully working & in very good condition opened her up my good she was CAKED in dust after a quick hoover (gently) i must say she has cleaned up a treat.

One REALLY worrying thing is that the plug was not wired up right not sure if it was factory but i have no put it right. it was Blue in live & Earth in top which is right & brown on neutral HMM

The X has an IEC socket and came with a moulded plug from factory.
