New Ushers! Clunkity Clunk? Really?

So here are my new (used) Ushers – just out of the box. Look Great!

They are significantly heavier than the B&W CM2s, though just a bit larger.

Ready to plug them in? But wait, something goes ‘Clunk’ inside the speaker… what could it be?
Turns out the ‘back plate on the tweeter has come loose. Take a look, it covers a hole directly into the back of the tweeter.

Anyone seen this kind of thing before? I think I should epoxy it back on…
The other one seems ok.
Any ideas?

I'd be really interested to know how they sound when they're up and running. I recently got some Usher S520's off ebay;
and find them really likeable. I've always had floorstanders and do miss the bigger box; but what these do; they do very well.

Glue it on again, surely 'good' as new? If there is a problem later, any sort of claim or request to Usher for help, the tweeters are as standard again and look perfect.

I recently heard some small Ushers on the end of some pretty serious gear (it was a test system), and they sounded very impressive indeed.

these are USHER COMPASS X-708s. i purchased them un-heard based on enthusiastic reviews and members of this forum - seems everyone loves Ushers.

At first listen (with the clunker removed), they seem really nice, sweet. Smoother than the B&Ws. There is still bite in the right places like with sax,etc.

I will let them burn it a bit (not sure how long they have been boxes) and then give more of a review. :)

You should return these back to where they came and get a new pair. A customer should never have to fix an item just bought - ever.

It looks to be just an additional chamber to lower the tweeters Fs [resonant frequency] glue it back on & forget about it ;)

My paranoia would set in, and I would want to use the same epoxy for both tweeters. That it has come off suggests that it has been dropped.

Well, yes... If the OP feels the same way I'd recommend asking the seller to go halves on a new tweeter from Usher.

If used and not from a dealer, I'd use contact adhesive in case of the need to take apart in the future. Evo-Stick is perfect for the job. If used but from a dealer on Ebay, this shouldn't affect your Statutory rights and you are entitled to return them for repair or a refund although you have to pay the cost of the return shipping, so it'd be cheaper to repair them yourself and ask the seller for a little consideration (money off) and make sure the photos are emailed as evidence. Goods bought "good as new" consequently found to be faulty can be viewed as "not as described". Any respectable seller would give you at least a little consideration for the trouble, time and expense of putting them right.

Considering that returning them would be a long trip (shipping back from bulgaria...) i took James advice and just stuck'em back on. Worst case i will need to re order tweeters from Usher some day.

In any case the result is they seem to work well - they sound mirrored, good airy and wide field - so i dont think the glue did anything bad.

There is chance the other one will pop off too, so i will watch for it!

I think you are right it is not a critical component - with it removed, i could not hear a clear difference between the two speakers.

Sounds like you got a good deal.

I had a bass cone come partially loose on a pair of used Apogee ribbon hybrids. I just glued it back on. Sorted. Why make a fuss and obsess over it? :scratch:
