View Full Version : Whittlebury Show Attendance Thread
If ok with mods I would like to start a who is attending the show from AOS so I can prepare my "tokens" of appreciation to give out
for all members who utter the secret AOS code, it will be 2 immortal words taken from monty python's life of brian, a bit of light hearted
fun in an all too serious world. The dates for the show are the 22nd and 23rd September.
I will have my usual open stand in the brooklands suite (sorry guys but you cannot get past me as I am bang in the middle where the entrance is :lol:)
This year you have our very own "lurcher" Mr Nick Gorham with his own room showing Longdog Audio's products with a fully functioning system playing!
Nick's rather special valve DAC will be hooked up playing DSD and pc based music along with a vinyl front end using Nick's valve phono stage, Sonus Faber
speakers and various other bits and bobs. IsoTek mains conditioning as hotel rooms need it!
Please let us know if you are attending via this thread please, there are rumours even Marco may bite the bullet and show his face, go on daftee you
know you want to.

Actually, that reminds me, I meant to start a music thread, to get some ideas what folk like to listen to at shows, I know my choice of music is not for everyone.

what worries me is that he associates Kraftwerk with partytime, and I can see Dynamo Hum going down well at a show :-)
No 'plinky plonky' jazz, no Dire Straits or Pink Floyd (or at least not the tracks everyone always plays), no playing of whole albums, no overtures, nothing horribly compressed, nothing that is just random notes strung together by long silences, don't allow people to chat loudly in the room (usually it is the reps themselves who are to blame) or turn the music down so people can chat without the music intruding! Don't play the music ridiculously quietly (or loudly).
If you can avoid the above you will be doing better than most of the other rooms at the show :).
The only detail that's missing, daftees, is WHEN IS THE SHOW?
Don't presume that folk will automatically know! ;)

A lot of attendees bring their own vinyl to listen to plus a lot buy some while they are there so feel free to bring some tunes dude.
So there is now a £1.80 'booking fee' on top of the ticket price. Thanks a lot and get stuffed. ( not mcru of course)

For those that didn't know already, we ( Z:Axis Audio) will be running a full Concert Fidelity system (handbuilt japanese amplification of purist design), TAD CR1 speakers and MBL 1621a cd transport / Sony PS-B80 source components. Supports will be our newly launched rack, which is already getting serious interest. We will be in Chapel Suite and will be running timed Demo's starting on the hour from 12pm onwards. Do come and say hello, be good to put faces to usernames!

Blind Faith sadly only made one studio recording, Marc Cohn's 1st album (i think) the one with Walking In Memphis, you know the song Cher managed to mutilate. Lastly The Band's 1st or 2nd albums, don't mind which.

Albarry will be showing their beautiful amplifiers and playing them through Harbeth SHL5 speakers. Not sure which room but when you find it, pop in and have a chat with Neil.
Oooh...nice one. I'll look forward to that in particular and also to hearing Nick's system! Will the little Albarry MC head amp feature somewhere in the system, Dave, (I was very impressed with it) or will the demo system be digital-only? :)

which dsd will you be using,is it the one gazjam designed with 5 star review......might be in the market for one of these. getting fed up using a lap top and usb that seems to be a magnet for my familly to trip over.

you sound like some other people I could mention but I have not met any of them but have met you and you were not rude or annoying! (the 2 usually go hand in hand) :)

What laptop? A 250MHz Compaq running Windows 98 and fitted with 512MB of memory and a 40Meg drive? It is a critical source component, but it is listed as if just anything will do the job.

David shall i book you in for around noon, I have a spare slot then? I could give you five minutes of 'notional hassle' and then we could proceed to a Damscene conversion as I see the light and declare your 'insert latest product here' the best 'thing' I've ever heard.
It's worked wonders before.....:cool:

I'm pretty certain the MC1 will be in use as Neil is not really a 'digital man', as befits a true British Hi-Fi manufacturer.

Albarry was good, the Pro-ject balanced phonosatage looked stellar, but really very little from the established brands has stuck during the trip home. Other than that it was actually Nick's dac that impressed me most, in fact his whole set-up was good as was the sound in teddy Pardo's room. Two emerging brands showing how it can be done...
I would agree with that - am going again tomorrow.
I am glad many of the visitors to my stand said many rooms sounded good (there are always a few that don't but it seemed less this year).
Attendance was up I have been told, proof that the UK hifi scene is alive and well. Quick picture of Nick's room below.

many told me afterwards (when they had been in nick's room and were on their way back to the car park which was why I did so well as I get them as they enter and as they leave) that the techie sounded superb
not many knew it was mine either
it was slightly funny as we had all the turntable set up gear from clearaudio, the techie had not been played since my audio fest when you were all messing with it, the cartridge tracks about 2.5grammes, it was set at 3.5 (who did that then?)
nick and andrew set it up and all was good
the entire show from what I was told was heavily vinyl orientated which is great, 2 rooms had reel to reel sounding superb (again I was told as I don't ever get chance to have a wander)
many new customers I asked if they had been in the longdog room as they did not know me and nick are mates, all said they enjoyed the sound including the TT as well as the DAC
so yes the techy sung!
The Techy went down real well Marco. Once we had the tracking force right and the pivot point in the right place (discovered why it was wrong when it came to the end. The SME plug would not come out with the arm in the correct position). Quiet a few "that sound is coming out of that table!", and a couple of "I must go back and look at vinyl again" were heard over the weekend. I got back at 11:30 last night (had to drop the speakers back with their owner on the way back), and get up at 6:30 to unpack the van and get it back to the hire co. So just about dead on my feet now. But it was a good weekend, much stress leading up to the Saturday morning, but once the doors opened it all went great.

Hi Marco,
Techie sounded superb...kinda liquid sound that has you closing your eyes and forgetting about the passage of time. As a real bonus, Nick's kit is very nicely put together in very good quality cases...top stuff!
