View Full Version : I stopped using Spotify
In the latest update Spotify is now part of my start up.
This is final straw for me I terminated my contract and removed Spotify from my computer
Why did you use it? I cannot see your issue.
You can turn it off so it doesn't open on startup... that's what I did :)
But then again I only use the free player anyhow, as yet I can't see why I'd use the paid version!

It isnt controlling your hard drive. Your PC does that.

In the settings of Spotify? I unticked the box and all was well.
Also what Alan says, it is not controlling your hard drive, that is infact the motherboard combined with the chip combined with the O/S etc... but then I'm being a little pedantic there :lol:
You don't even have to use the Spotify app anymore. If I'm on a PC that isn't my main PC for using Spotify then I just access everything via a web browser, which gives you the majority of the functionality you get with the app. Spotify has had the 'Start Spotify when OS loads' option since the beginning. Sounds a bit strange that it would suddenly get ticked after an update, but you can always untick it again. Certainly not a reason to dump such a useful service in my eyes.
Yep, that is how I have found it to function too.
You may wish to pay for it because then it is higher quality (res) and no adverts. I rarely use it though so don't pay.
When it came out I had the Spotify App but they later changed it so only paid up (premium) members could stream music from it (which is rather the whole point) - I chose to delete it instead.

All you have to do if it won't stop launching is go into System Configuration and untick it from the list of Startup items. Should be no problem then.

You can stream at 320k, which isn't that far off FLAC.
Additionally, I use Spotify Premium on my iPhone to download offline playlists. Used with Koss Porta Pros, it's a great little setup on the move.
Spotify is amazing for discovering new music and rediscovering old. Best £10 a month I spend.
I had a spotify subscription before, but did not use it after awhile. It's useful for searching for new music on the PC maybe, but I often find it elsewhere on the web as well. I like to listen to the much better sound on my hifi and other sound systems. I get a more real connetion to the music then. My experience is that people I know who mostly stream or download all their music lose some of the connection to music, and becomes more like a restless prop in a noisy world. Ever been to a party where everyone after a while wants to be the night's DJ? Not my kind of good listening. :)
I agree with your points about losing your connection with the music, but listening via Spotify and a real music collection are not mutually exclusive. Spotify for me is more than worth the £10/month:
1. I don't buy crap albums anymore.
2. I get to listen to stuff I'd completely forgotten about and never got around to buying.
3. I can collaborate on playlists with friends and recommend them and get recommended new music.
4. I don't have to keep a music collection on my phone anymore - If I'm in an area with good phone signal, I can stream whatever I like, and if I'm not, then I keep a few rotating playlists downloaded to the phone which update whenever I'm on a wifi network.
5. INCREDIBLY useful for festivals - Next month is Swn Festival in Cardiff - Currently, I know about 15% of the bands playing. At least 60% of those bands have something on Spotify, so by the time I get to the festival, I'll have a much better idea of the bands I want to see live and the ones to avoid like the plague.
Fundamentally though, if I keep coming back to an album on Spotify for more than a week or so, I'll go out and buy the album, then enjoy it properly.

Cancelled the premium some while back , I didn't feel I was using it enough to justify the cost. Didn't really like the newish interface but still use the free version to check out artist and albums that I don't know much about. if I like something I'll go and buy it, if not nothing lost, and yes I unchecked it in the start up items. It's my PC I'll decide what starts up thank you!

In our house my wife, son, daughter and myself all use Spotify Premium at some time. Brilliant value, and as has been mentioned previously has enabled me to make informed choices regarding future purchases as well as stopping me buying a crock of **** too.

Ditto what clothy says. Whole family use it to access music to phones / Kindle for bedrooms and cars. I don't use it on the main system - SQ not good enough. Great for exploring / checking out.

+1. I can't see nothing wrong with Spotify... The only annoying thing is that some content is region locked. Apart from that just positive really. It is integrated nicely in Squeezebox architecture as well...
SQ is fine by my very modest system, and I would definitely recommend it for browsing and discovering.
Anyway, that was my 2 pennies worth...

went to see Kelly Joe Phelps live at Milngavie folk club last night with my wife and son.......purely off the back of spotify premium....my son uses it on his phone whilst at work during the day. It has opened up a world of different genres and artists to me and my family as it will quite often steer you along alternative paths, with the" if you like this recommendations" Like my movies and music but don't subscribe to any tv.
Phelps was marvellous live......glad he overcame his health issues to perform.

Great gig mate.......he had to cancel during celtic connections with a nerve injury to his arms, thankfully he was playing great last night.......let me work out that the recordings are pretty good and the breathing grunty John Martyn style noises he makes are part of his style.
My son was blown away with his guitar work Martin acoustic and full steel with amazing slide plucking combo going on........did make me realise that statics are great at what they do.
Spotify for me has really opened doors by letting me hear some our get together tunes in my room/kit/ears......
