Microphonic valves

One of the valves in my dac has developed microphony, its been working fine for some time but definitely likes to "sing along" when the music gets loud.

I've tested this theory by tapping the DAC, it rings every time.

Please help a noob; does this mean its about to die? I bought it new from Watford valves.

Is my equipment at risk if it goes bang?

Would using valve damping rings help, in your experiences. This is the valve in question:

Doesn't mean it's going to fail, but there's not a lot you can do about it except buy some new valves.

No worries, it's just one of those things unfortunately, nowt you can do about it.

How old is the valve Martin?

I notice Watford have a 90 day return policy ...

Try a warranty claim even if it's just outside of warranty, you never know, Watford are a decent bunch to trade with. If a valve is going to fail, it usually does so within the first 50 hours or so of use. Some designs are more microphonic than others so perhaps worth doing a little research as not all valves of a similar type are the same. Valve damping rings can't hurt, neither can sitting the DAC on some decent isolation (sorbothane works very well).

That is unexpected, they are not that old, try Watford as you got them directly from there, If you want I will send you a couple of 5687 to use while you sort it out.

Nick, can I run the DAC with only one valve in one channel, to help me work out which it is, or could that damage the DAC/amp?
