The Smiths
Can't abide them. Morissey can't sing to save his life and frankly I'd rather spend 45 minutes engaged in something way more fun, like blood letting...
Pop
Donny & Marie Osmond (cringe)
Atom and the Ants
Actually quite a few but - waddaya know - can't remember their names.
Classical
Anything conducted by Michael Biltong Thomas.
Anything composed by Johann Strauss the 1st (or the 2nd, or the 45th). I would rather have a vasectomy by a blind surgeon.

Too many to list but I agree with you on the Smiths. I think Morrisy has a dreadful voice. Can't stand Pulp either as Cocker has a crap voice also.
It doesn't matter how good the music is if the lead singers voice ain't up to much! Alternativly an average song can be greatly enhanced if the singer has a really good voice.

I find the need to 'sub' label stuff a bit strange. There are enough categories out there without splitting it all down into finer and finer bits. I had to look up what prog rock is on Wiki!! All the bands that appear to come under this heading are in my collection as 'rock'. many different styles to be sure but its still rock music.
Its fascinating to see what some people don't like though. Us old gits - some of us at least - will I'm sure find it hard to understand Dylan, the Beatles and the likes of Springsteen on someone's list but what do kids know huh?:eyebrows:

Yeah I like them to, especially 'Hotel California' live... excellent test track for our Hifi's :)
Dylan wrote some absolutely stellar songs, so I can forgive him a lot.
However, his gig that I went to back in 1987 or so remains to this day positively the worst live experience I have ever endured.

I suggest you post that comment on the Steve Hoffman forum (unofficial Beatles fan club) and see the reaction. All I can say if you grew up in the sixties you would understand what they were all about. Practically every rock band since has taken something from them (and I don't just mean Oasis). Lousy tunes is way of the mark - in fact probably the greatest pop tunesmiths of all time.

'Baby lyrics' is a bit strong too - maybe it could apply for some of the early material, but their work contains some extremely sophisticated lyricism. I wasn't a teenager when they were about but I recognise them for the incredible contribution they gave to music and I play their material at least once a week. A remarkable band and one of the very few who truly changed the world.

As I said, "what do kids know!!"
I know very few people who, if they don't particularly like the Beatles music, do appreciate the change they bought in the 60s. If it hadn't been for them, the greatest influence to future music might have been Cliff Richard:eek:
I have every LP and single they released. I rarely play it these days which is strange. I suspect that although they were great, they were of their time and what they started has blossomed and been improved to a degree. I am not talking Oasis here () but the likes of Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell etc who have more complex things to say and more complex music to say it with.
Time moves on. However, when I do play it, I tend to listen for hours and end up with a nice nostalgic glow - not necessarily caused by the Merlot or the Guinness.
I'll add my name to the Bob Dylan/Smiths/rap clubs.
Also most stuff that has come out of Nashville......

Hi Guys, just joined up. Had a good laugh reading through this thread.
Dylan, the Beatles and a lot of the older bands not liked, in fact had many covers done by others which improved their material no end. The one that so many rave about (Elvis) just doesn't do it for me. My personal taste in music is quite eclectic so I don't agree with all comments, but that's what makes us human. One comment I definitely can't let lie is the "X-Factor" one. More often than not the artists that have been voted out earlier are the more talented ones - the show is after all based on votes from Joe Public after a certain point, and really, what do they know. Boom, boom. boom, wail, scream and moan.
Ah well! My two cents worth.

I agree with all comments reference the X-Factor - its not about the music, it's about who can get the most votes and I agree that some of the better artists get removed because they are not popular with Joe public but in terms of music prowess, they walk all over the remaining contenstants.
However, IMHO, there have been some good artists come out of shows like the X-Factor or similar. I mean people like, Rebecca Ferguson and Will Young... these guys can seriously sing :)

This could take a while but I'll keep it brief...
First the ones that it is seemingly unacceptable to dislike.... Amy Winehouse, Beatles, Bowie, Dylan, Floyd, Oasis, Stone Roses, Bert Jansch, Coldplay, U2, Guns 'n' Roses, Bob Marley, Sting, Annie Lennox, Lily Allen, Manic Street Preachers, Foo Fighters, Pixies, Radiohead, Fleetwood Mac after Peter Green left...
I do understand and accept the contribution some of these artists have made to popular music but I still don't like them.
Then some that I simply cannot understand ever being popular... Michael Bolton, Kenny G, Gary frikk*n Barlow, Simply Red...
Nasty aggressive gangsta' rap is vile.... Prentend bada*s motherf**kers who think that they are tough because they have guns and call ladies bitch*s.... So sad.
Sad self-harming androgynous guylined EMO bands singing about how bad it all is instead of just carrying out their threats of suicide and saving us the trouble of ever hearing it.
Nu Metal.
I particularly dislike the idiots in the industry who make money from being talentless turds - I'm thinking of 'N'Dubs and others like them of which there are plenty in the Urrrrrr-Ban Radio 1 land of today.
In classical I really dislike the syrupy tinkly drivel composed by Rachmaninov and similar?
Anything by Chopping sorry Chopin.
Nigel Kennedy should be a carpenter the way he saws his violin and Sarah Chang isn't much better.
Kiri Te Kanawana, Callas, Garrett, Katherine Jenkins and other similar squawkers.
That is enough of what I don't like :)

I can also recommend 'Caprice Bohemien' in this vein. An early work, rarely performed, it's a great favourite of mine ... Stick with it, it's a slow-burner ...

Rap attitude and quality of product is not for me. Big hard boys and the odd girls making money from going through the motions. Hard to see the genuine article from product - if there is one and likely I wouldn't agree with it anyway.
Rap came out of ranting and I didn't like that as a style. Go back further in that trail and you end up in Ska territory, some of which wasn't too bad and it seemed 'genuine'

They are/were awful
I spent most of my time watching them incredulous they were so bad, I wondered if it was some sort of in joke I wasn't getting. My mates agreed

I'm a Smiths hater too - and yes I was a teenager in the '80s
Others:
Collins - he can't sing to save his life - get over it
Genesis - I've tried but I don't get it. And the post PG stuff is dire - Invisible Touch must be one of the worst albums ever - crap cover too
Yes - Again I've tried, I really have. It's mostly meandering shite
U2 - apart from the odd tune
Coldplay - Bedwetter's music
Pet Shop Boys - I understand the appeal. But not for me.
Eurythmics - likewise
White Stripes - get a bass player you knob, it's not optional in a rock band.
One thing I don't understand is why people dismiss rap - yes the bulk of it is shite. If you want to give it a chance try Snoop Dog - Doggystyle - some great tunes but be careful if you have young kids you may not want them to hear some of the lyrics...or for something a bit more sophisticated - Wu tang Clan. Best to assume all the bitch/hoe/motherfu**ker stuff is meant ironically of course ;)

I think many are brought down by their stable mates abd albums before or after
Smiths have a very few stand out tracks. Rest are so so and M’s vocals not good <cough>
Collins – some good work on Genesis. As a solo artist can’t see it. Radio 2 fodder
Genesis – There was a period where they were excellent. Try Trick of the tail, Seconds out, Lamb Lies down, Wind and Wuthering.
I don’t go for anything else of theirs. I saw them live at the not so good periods and missed out on the above for years. Steve Hackett seems to be the influencer for me
Yes – Some superb stuff with some ponderous and pretentious tracks even on the same album
Try The Yes Album, Time and a Word, Yes. The later stuff is not for me and that may be what you have heard
U2
Coldplay
Pet Shop Boys
Eurythmics
All agreed
White Stripes - get a bass player you knob, it's not optional in a rock band
Would be useful, but I like a lot of their stuff
Rap I see as similar to most pop music. It is popular and is shite – in the main. Fodder for fodder.
Add to that the attitude and I just move on. I see the prancing they do the same as the prancing ninny boy and girl bands.
Take it back to Motown and that was ok, Jackson too it to another level and then almost everyone jumped on the bandwagon. Dancing good, music not important

Bands and even artists change in their life, sometimes from album to album
You can love one of their albums and loathe another
Neil Young has hit some great highs and horrid lows
Ditto Genesis and others
I discovered buying a great CD by a band and finding others I bought on spec (!) not so good at all
Should have known as I've seen bands go on and off
Lost count of the albums I bought where Peel played a stand out track and the rest of the album was not good at all

I must correct you though Martin, as Country & Western as a genre term is a bit dated and it certainly isn't what I like, my preference is for Americana and Alt. Well mainstream Prog bands like YES, Genesis etc, are just that mainstream which is pretty much what commercial music is, hence im not to happy about that & try not to bother too much listerning to that stuuf.
Im at the Underground/Obscure end of it. If people say ''Well ive never heard of that band'' that puts a grin on my mug..
People ridicule me all the time claiming i am narrow minded but the fact is they seem to know noting about the music form other than the more popular Prog bands not realising there are literally hundreds of Prog/psych bands pre '73.. & Prog's not all about all the mad stage antics, excess etc that people seem to think it's about, again because that's what they see the mainstream bands do.

I thought Andre mentioned some post 1973 prog he likes? I am certainly with him in as much as 80% of the best rock and popular music was made from mid sixties through to mid seventies. Realy good music get's thinner on the ground after that especially if you aren't partial to most punk or synth based music. From the 80's onwards it is mainly trying to reinvent the wheel with bands of diminishing imagination and instrumental talent. A lot of 60s/70s music of excellent quality remains obscure because there was so much worthy output and only the lucky and /or slightly more showy/commercial rose to the top. Notable how bland and homogenised most so called 'indie' rock is now.
Paul.
I find that some develop blinkers and tar a genre with the same brush when they've not been impressed by a particular album or artist, and I include myself here. For years I avoided Country music because my Mum liked what I call 'Yehaw' style Country (don't know the accepted term, sorry). Recently though, due to Spotify, I've discovered albums in the genre that I really like, and generally the recordings and production are well above par too... :)

It's an hard thing to explain but as i listern over a short time scale from 1968 -1973 i can here qualities that make up what i listern to gradually vanish..
Take an example YES Very first album, proto progressive, simple, simply recorded big blooming recording where you can hear absolutly ever instrument within the picture. Move on a couple year & all changes, Were progressing in to more technical compositions, more technical recording techniques, more advanced instruments, thiner recording to my ears etc. Sometimes i think to myself please no more, i only wish prog would have lasted around two years the same as Psych did instead of self destructing LOL.. To answer your question then Paul no impossible really for me.. 1969-71 would have been perfect..
Elton John. That's about it, really. I have very catholic tastes.
Snow Patrol, Scouting for Girls, Maroon 5.... shockingly bad in my humble opinion.

You have hit the nail on the head there Dave, as that's what most people think of (me included until I had my eyes opened about 4 years ago) when you say Country, or worse still Country & Western. Which if you are thinking of thigh slapping 'yee ha' music, well that's hill billy country, or what most people describe as Country & Western . . look up Lefty Frizzell or Hank Williams on YouTube. Then you have the George Strait type of music, outlaw Country artists like Willie Nelson, Johhny Cash was different again and so it goes on. Now modern Country music just doesn't fit that style anymore, so it has been further defined (only very recently) as Americana, which is a genre having its roots in folk and country music (have you gone to sleep yet ), then there's Alt. Country artists like Ryan Adams . . . it's huge, The Civil Wars are Americana or Folk and their latest album went straight into the UK charts at #2. I think folk are finding out that places like Nashville and Austin are producing some very fine music right now, which couldn't be further from what most people refer to as Country & Western. Online streaming and websites which 'suggest' artists you might like could possibly be responsible for this, but Country/Americana is experiencing a bit of a ground swell at the moment - even Adele likes it and claims her next album is going to be recorded in Nashville!
But as I said before, I don't like pigeon holing music as it just doesn't work, give it a listen, see if you like it and go from there - but to stereotype anything with a banjo, fiddle, pedal steel or some dobro as Country & Western could mean you miss out on some very fine music. Things have moved on a little from the Rhinestone days ;)
This is country . . . Willies cover was the Billboard number 1 Country song of 1982 and a CMA Award winner in 1982 and 1983 as well as a Grammy recipient - a truly beautiful song and Willies renditions are considered by many as the quintessential versions.

I HATE thrash metal, such as, Slayer... No tune, just a bunch of untalented people screaming!
Now I loved Thrash back in the day and saw Slayer on their 'Reign in Pain' tour in '87, Anthrax on 'Among the Living' tour and Megadeth on the 'Peace Sells' tour.
These days I find Anthrax and Slayer virtually unlistenable, I can play 'Peace Sells' and 'So Far...' By Megadeth and 'Lightning' and 'Puppets' by Metallica but I think the music was very much of it's time.
I was happy to enjoy it when it was current and it will always be part of my youth just as gigs at the Hammersmith Odeon were but equally I don't lament its passing or try to relive those days and feelings.
Only other US thrash I really liked was Flotsam & Jetsam; Testament were good live but it didn't seem to translate onto the recordings.
I found Exodus, Possessed, Overkill and the like just didn't do it for me.
On the subject of metal I really dislike Slipknot and would never buy any of their music.

Not sure you'd like classical music much then, Martin. Their compositions are very classical in style.
I do have some classical music in my collection, in fact I used to be able to play the violin although not very well. It just isn't what I think of to put on when I sit down for some music. I like Bach, and Brahms. I watched the Brahms night at the Promenades, last year or the year before maybe, and I really enjoyed it. Not up for the modern, discordant stuff, though. I think people just pretend to like that stuff because it makes them look smart.

How can you possibly be without Stockhausen's "Aus der Sieben Tagen" or "Stimmung"?
Never heard of them but I guess they are a bit of racket, then? :) Can you appreciate the discordant stuff then Barry? I like jazz as well but again not if it's discordant, if there is something to 'get' then I just don't, I suppose.

Well, I bought them at a time when I was also listening to avant guarde and free-form jazz a lot (Ornette Coleman, Archie Shepp etc.). Have to confess though that I never really 'got into' Stockhausen.
I played the Stockhausen again a few months ago - and the thought crossed my mind: "just what was I thinking of?"

Not me, certainly. I have a limit to discordancy and it stops at about Ligeti. Anything further, and certainly the awful noise that the likes of Schoenberg and Birtwistle create, and I run away.
I agree about Bach, for whom my admiration climbs every year. Astonishingly complex music that always remains tuneful and quite brilliant. But then, that's how I hear Yes, too :)

What I like in the main are singer/songwriters (probably 60/40 split female/male) and if you want to put a label on it, then Americana, alt.country and some bluegrass etc. I'm also listening to Appalachian roots music too - I tend to research backwards when I find a modern artist I like, to see where their influences came from and I really enjoy self-discovery, seems so much more gratifying. YouTube is fantastic for this. I wouldn't really know where to start Brian as I have no idea what your musical tastes are like, mine are pretty wide and sometimes a little left field - I have a real soft spot for Terri Clark who is most definitely a country singer, but Country & Western? . . . not really sure what that is TBH, as I have said before.
American music is vast and right now I like a lot of what's coming out of Nashville, which even though its grown out of all proportion lately, the singer songwriter circle there is still quite tight, very active, very social and their musical product is prolific at the moment - Americana is growing exponentially right now.
I would say use the AoS search engine, put my user name in and the keyword 'spinning' and you will find my posts as to what I am playing. These two websites are also very good;
http://www.americana-uk.com/

If you want some quick recommendations, Jason Isbell - Southeastern (on Soundcloud) and Holly Williams - The Highway, this is my current album of the year ;)
One of the best recommendations I could give though, is listen to Bob Harris every Thursday on Radio2 7.00~8.00pm (http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b006x527). Its always on the website for a week after as well. Or Ricky Ross, which may be more to your liking being in the Scottish Mafia?
http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b00hh26l His current show has one of my favourite artists on, Tift Merritt
This is my current favourite song;
vMSKxGiCprY
A deeply personal and moving song - you might prefer the studio version with Jackson Browne? (on Spotify)

Thanks Martin , I've bought a few of the CDs recommended on this thread also. Never been disappointed yet mate . Usually check them out first if I can . I was really looking for recommendations for new(ish) Country and Western artists , who I haven't heard of ,to have a listen to with a view to purchasing. Cheers anyway.
C&W not my field but I stumbled across Jerry Jeff Walker in a bundle of records I bought at auction and he seems pretty good with
Contrary to Ordinary and
A Man Must Carry On.
Good recordings too.

Good man:thumbsup:
Great thread. I've just skimmed through it and there has been a few mentioned that would be on my list (Smiths, U2, Oasis, Dylan, rap, amongst others) but I can't recall seeing Van Morrison mentioned and I really must add him, I can't stand his stuff.

Rap, Drum and Base, Drill, manufactured bands (little mix etc).
I'm open to any type of music, some I like and some I don't but there is one, one that I even struggle to spit his name out....Meatloaf!, no, just no.

It's rock music for people who don't like rock music. I think Meatloaf himself has been commendably mental in his time, but Jim "Total Eclipse of the Heart" Steinman threw everything but the kitchen sink at the production. More is less.
Happy to report a Meatloaf-shaped hole in my music collection.

Don't want to hear them, but I don't mind watching Little Mix (or Big Knicks as I prefer to call them). They do wear rather large knickers, and they don't care who sees them.

Van is OK by me, but you only need one of his albums as they are basically all the same.
Has no one mentioned Whitney Houston yet? Dreadful over-emoted rubbish.

Bat out of Hell is a classic rock album and deserves to be in any collection, but Meat's other albums? Nope, poor, very much a one hit wonder.
I don't own any Stones or Beatles :D

Well I'm not having it in mine! :)
no idea why BOOH is hated so much tbh. its a good album(for what it is; schmaltz rock)
The Pet Shop Boys and MPeople. Absolute shite.
U2, obvs. Oasis, also obvs. Paul Weller's solo stuff. Eric Clapton's solo stuff. Paul McCartney's solo stuff. Also obvs, anything by any female singer called Lily, Madonna, Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande. Ed Bloody Sheeran, obvs. And ELO, ELP and Yes. Any shouty NuMetal shite.

Anybody remember 'Tiny Tim'? He has yet to be surpassed when it comes to turning out complete sh*te! Yet he made millions from the gullible suckers who thought it was 'fashionable' to own his albums.
If you don't believe me, here's his ridiculous version of Great Balls of Fire. Make your own mind up.

And we were expected to take him seriously!

No. He was essentially a comedy act.

Laughable yes, but he was touted as a serious artist.
Don't really remember much about him bar the name

There usually is, except for the time he paid a decorator to hang some 'flock' wallpaper. It wasn't what he expected, and he came home to find his boudoir looking more like an Indian restaurant :(

Not as bad as William Shatner's album of covers.
And what about Leonard Cohen? I never got Leonard Cohen at all.

I reckon an album of Bill Shatner and Leonard Cohen duets would have been pretty good. Cohen did look a bit like Nimoy anyway if you squint. Even more similar these days.

I'd have thought 'By The Rivers Dark' would sound bloody amazing through your system.

Unfortunately yes I do, that name didn't exactly make my life in a junior school oodles of fun!
I guess if he'd been any good it would have been OK, but he was, as you quite rightly say, utter sh**te.

He was crap alright - but then so too was Wild Man Fisher; The Legendary Stardust Cowboy; John Ottaway; Marc Bolan; Ian Hunter; Colin Blunstone , and many more .....

I can't stand Madonna, she's bloody awful.
And Kanye West for too many reasons to list.
