I'd like to post my thoughts on some of these videos you've been posting John as I have watched just about all of them and have done a bit of research on the current geo-political state of world society, however discussing politics on AoS is frowned upon so I shall refrain from doing so, besides, it's probably for the best as I do tend to get a bit passionate about this kind of stuff ;)

Hi Dave,

In the main, the contents of these videos are really addressing economical, rather than political, issues.

Though of course we could quite easily say everything is political, including the discussing of what we had for dinner, or the practising of stringing three words together.

Besides, I am quite sure we can manage to have a reasoned debate without upsetting any bigots hiding in here.

If the numps start kicking off I am sure the moderators will step in soon enough. After all, that is why they are there.

Why not give it a go. At worst we will discover who wishes to restrict your freedom, and why.

All the best,

John.

Well yes, I've been wondering the same thing for some time now.
To bombard a hi-fi forum with (over 20 now) embedded politically themed videos with no comment as to their content or any opinion thereof - it's beginning to feel to me a bit like we're being spammed.

I don't understand why you would choose a forum dedicated to music and hi-fi to discuss these issues.

Of course you do. Most forms of media include subjects differing from their main content, if only to increase their readership.

I have not looked, so let me ask if you saw fit to ask a similar question within the Din-Dins thread.

The owner of the forum has provided the means for members to discuss other issues without them having to go elsewhere. Switched-on in my view.

Just because a person may think it is not suitable to discuss what they had for dinner on a hi-fi forum should not, at least in my opinion, be a justification for the thread's elimination from the forum.

A counter-argument could easily see your statement as having greater political motivation, when compared to the wishes of a couple of blokes wanting to discuss current affairs.

I would be more worried myself if you are suggesting we may discuss anything, but only if it is dumbed-down meaningless twaddle. This is not a reference to the Din-Dins thread, which I see as a vehicle for humour, or any other thread for that matter.

I am sure the forum has greater character and strength than you seem to be implying, and doubt very much it would be effected in any meaningful way due to Dave and myself discussing financial or other issues.

John.

I was not aware of any topic restrictions with the 'Abstract Chat' thread.

Politics is a sensitive issue for some (and a largely boring one for most I suspect), but if somebody finds any contributions to whatever thread contentious, they have the option to ignore it, not respond and move on!

Politics/Economics ... They are inseparable surely. It is why the world is in such a mess...

Agreed, in the sense that all things are interconnected.

The current Keynesian approach is certainly directly responsible for the devaluation of my savings.

Iceland's unpopular Hayekian solution has them back on the road to recovery after only five years, whilst the rest of Europe, us included, are still in the doldrums with, more than likely, worse to come.

Hi Chris,

I just had a quick look at the figures for the first video which discussed banking: 36 replies and 718 views.

Why is it always something bad? Why not something good?

Why is it so important to have everybody and everything sussed out and tidied away?

So you do not understand someone or something. Big deal.

Using words like "bombard" and "spammed" suggest assault where there is none. Please do not crap the thread with such propaganda.

I have a sneaking feeling you may be, unwittingly or otherwise, encouraging an unhealthy suppression of discussion.

Rather than promoting fear without justification, why not just ignore us and let us get on with our discussion.

John, in your extensive reply you make a great many assumptions and leap to an equal number of conclusions. What I wrote was a simple statement, there is nothing implicit other than that which you choose to read in to it. At the point where I made my initial post there was no discussion of the topic (not even by you) and so nothing to stifle. In addition, any inference relating to forum members is entirely your own.

Most of the Din-dins thread (I haven't contributed to it and am unlikely to do so) is not visible to me; also it is only one thread.

But most importantly, it is a bit of trivial tat and ideally suited to the 'talk random nonsense' section of a 'music and hi-fi forum'. On the other hand, the political and sociological issues you imply are of an entirely different scale of importance and quite beyond the remit of a forum such as this; if you really cared about them you would post them elsewhere.

The 'Any other business' section of pfm is full of 'political' debates of this nature and all are entirely worthless except as a vehicle for a minority to participate in a poorly informed pissing competition!

Thanks Geoff,

My sentiments exactly, and if it all goes pear-shaped there is always administration, the same for any other thread.

Quite frankly there are far greater issues to be dealt with, such as those who should know better crapping a private sale for instance. Absolutely appalling behaviour in my opinion.

Ah, I can help you with this.

Firstly, maybe those wishing to discuss these things are not as repressed as you suggest and find these subjects just as trivial as anything else in Life.

Secondly, if you own the opinion "debates of this nature and all are entirely worthless except as a vehicle for a minority to participate in a poorly informed pissing competition!" then why are you here?

In the first instance you imply these subjects are above the trivial, suggesting being of some importance, yet immediately follow with descriptions of "entirely worthless," "minority," and "poorly informed pissing competition!"

Your point may have been better served if you had stuck to one side or the other, but I respect your right to express your opinion no matter how convoluted it may initially appear.

It seems to me there is the possibility this type of discussion just might not be your sort of thing.

I am unable to assist you further concerning the insecurity demonstrated in your rather emotive reply, and must confess I am at a loss to understand why you would subject yourself to even more upset by remaining here.

There is absolutely no requirement for such an aggressive and obsessive application of control over others. We really are quite harmless. Honest.

With respect, I ask you again to please refrain from crapping a thread in which you clearly have no interest.

Take care,

John.

Oh dear, it would appear that the Politburo has spoken... :eyebrows:

I would not let guys like that faze you Dave. They are mostly cowards hiding behind anger and hate. Their bitterness usually conceals a desire to transfer fear from themselves to others. Unfortunately that sort of behaviour seems to just go round and round with no apparent purpose other than making someone else more upset than they are. Well he can bugger off and take his bad mood somewhere else. I am not having it.

So, I am off to have a blast on the stereo just now, and while I see the videos I have posted as really speaking for themselves, and certainly presenting their points way better than I ever could, I am up for further discussion if you like. I will not be worrying too much about what other people might think either, because personally I just plain refuse to be psyched in to submission by inadequate control freaks seeking some sort of creepy psychological buzz.

I guess I am just trying to say, and very poorly at that, I am not afraid to make a fool of myself because I simply do not acknowledge the validity of this irritating oneupmanship and continuous pain in the arse squabbling blokes seem to be obsessed with. Ha! Good job really when you think about all the shite I come out with.

John, for someone who has not been on the forum for that long, I think you are a little bit unfair to YNWaN who has been around for quite some time.

Ah, I can help you with this.

Firstly, maybe those wishing to discuss these things are not as repressed as you suggest and find these subjects just as trivial as anything else in Life.

You have chosen to use the word 'repressed', I wrote nothing of the sort and such a term never occurred to me (interesting that it comes to your mind though).

Secondly, if you own the opinion "debates of this nature and all are entirely worthless except as a vehicle for a minority to participate in a poorly informed pissing competition!" then why are you here?

Firstly, there is no debate taking place, just you creating four threads simultaneously all with the same socio-economic content - i.e. one thread spread out over four (presumably to give Google the greatest chance of finding them). I'm here to discuss music and hi-fi as it is a music and hi-fi forum (my posting history over the last four years will support this statement). If I wanted to discuss politics, religion, world economy etc. I would do so on another kind of forum. Why are you here if not to discuss music and hi-fi, surely that is the more pertinent question?

In the first instance you imply these subjects are above the trivial, suggesting being of some importance, yet immediately follow with descriptions of "entirely worthless," "minority," and "poorly informed pissing competition!"

You seem to have difficulty separating the subject from the discussion. I think the subjects you seek to raise are 'above the trivial', but the manner in which you choose to raise the issues demeans their importance.

Your point may have been better served if you had stuck to one side or the other, but I respect your right to express your opinion no matter how convoluted it may initially appear.

With respect, my point was hardly convoluted (there are no 'two sides' to it) but I can see you did not grasp it. As I said before, I've seen a lot of these 'political' threads on hi-fi forums and, if they go anywhere, they end up just being long rambling tirades in which people flog their own prejudices to death.

I am unable to assist you further concerning the insecurity demonstrated in your rather emotive reply, and must confess I am at a loss to understand why you would subject yourself to even more upset by remaining here.

John, you attempt to use ad hominem to sidetrack the question I originally asked; I didn't ask for your help and I can't imagine what insecurity you imagine you see. Perhaps if you felt more secure you would attempt to discuss these issues on a forum actually geared towards political debate.

There is absolutely no requirement for such an aggressive and obsessive application of control over others. We really are quite harmless. Honest

How amusing :). Perhaps you cannot see that it is you who has the emotive and aggressive responses. There is no evidence that I sought to apply any control - all I asked was why you thought this was an appropriate place to raise these issues. Your response was to accuse me of controlling behaviour, insecurity, emotive language, aggression and obsession - I will let others draw their own conclusions.

We really are quite harmless. Honest

Who is this 'we' to whom you refer I wonder (after all, you have only been an AoS member for three weeks) and in what way did I suggest you were in any way harmful?

With respect, I ask you again to please refrain from crapping a thread in which you clearly have no interest.

Umm... that's actually the first time you have asked me to stop posting. You say you seek to stimulate debate but actually forum crap by creating four threads the same and then posting exactly the same responses on all of them...

I only stumbled on your threads because Tapatalk placed them at the top of the 'unread topics section' and it struck me as odd that you had simultaneously created four separate threads on the same subject (this still doesn't make sense). Consider what you wrote in post #15 and then ask yourself who is the angry and fearful one...

Anyway, as others have said, I can ignore this thread and that will be what I will be doing.

Paul.

Fair comment and I respect your opinion Paul.

However, be it Andrew Popely or someone else flying under the AudioFlat banner, I am curious to know exactly why that person would be following Dave's #2 Post with anything other than encouragement, when he clearly states he would like to post his thoughts on some of the videos but feels pressured into not doing so by the very people who should be respecting his freedom to express himself, and if not agreeing with, at least accepting the declaration of his opinions no matter how far his passions carry him.

So far I have avoided political and religious subjects directly, though would readily admit these subjects are unavoidably included in the Banking, Comedy, Music, and War videos I have posted. Like you say, nobody is forced to watch them.

I wonder if other members of the forum have similar experiences to Dave. That would be a shame in my opinion.

Of course, the irony of all this is a political statement has now been made which may be of greater consequence than any of those contained within the videos.

That is to say, on one of my threads you feckers will respect each other!

Fair enough Paul?

All the best,

John.

John,

Sorry for not being able to reply to you until now, but I've been at work.

However, to deal with your response to me:

I just had a quick look at the figures for the first video which discussed banking: 36 replies and 718 views.
Yes, that's correct but look at some of the others if you want to discuss figures. However, I have no issue with the fact that the twenty odd threads have not exactly set records for numbers of posts or that most of them have had no response whatsoever from anyone - that's the risk you take when you start a thread!

As for subject matter, as long as it's legal, as far as I'm concerned, you can start a thread on any topic under the sun. But as has been pointed out, people tend not to indulge too much in discussing religion or politics here, not because they aren't interested or because they don't have an opinion, but because, more often than not, it ends messily.

Using words like "bombard" and "spammed" suggest assault where there is none.
Please do not crap the thread with such propaganda.
Perhaps we should move the comments which you regard as thread crapping to a thread of their own. However, since the only discussion on this thread is from people conveying reasons for their reticence for entering into the discussion you apparently intended to ensue, I fail to see how anyone is crapping on it.
My point about it feeling like we were being spammed is directly related to the other point I made, that generally your embedded videos are not accompanied by any comment or opinion from you whatsoever - you're not exactly drawing people into debate that way are you?

When I looked at the forum this morning I saw 4 separate threads started by you on the same subject - 'Meltdown: Episodes 1-4' - now, for anyone involved in managing the traffic on the forum, I can assure you, that feels like a bombardment. Perhaps they would have been better placed together as one thread?

I have a sneaking feeling you may be, unwittingly or otherwise, encouraging an unhealthy suppression of discussion.
That's a remarkable statement!!
I don't spend the not inconsiderable time that I give freely and willingly to assist in the running of this forum in pursuit of preventing people from holding discussions - I am truly astonished at this. Really, I am!.

Rather than promoting fear without justification, why not just ignore us and let us get on with our discussion.
Who exactly is afraid?
And if so, then of what?
And what exactly have I done to promote this fear?
....Gosh, you're right, I really am a monster!

That sort of deals with your response to my post above.
Now we come to the matter of a later post of yours which refers to me personally, though in the guise of a member of 'The Politburo'. Dave's reference to me as such, I take in good heart as I know and understand Dave's sense of humour as we both generally get on very well together on AoS.

Ok, first of all, I'm not really happy with the existence of these threads, as I don't think that they offer anything I'd consider as being of benefit to AoS, particularly as they've already caused some friction. However, I'll allow the discussion conducted so far to run for now, albeit I've merged all current debate into the one thread. Further content, however, will be closely monitored.

Secondly, John, you're fairly new to this forum, so perhaps you're unaware of how things work here. Members do not respond to prompting by moderators in such a rude and condescending way, as you have done; they take on board what they've been told, with good reason, and act on it. Therefore, I would be obliged if you apologised to Chris, remove the offending remarks, as quoted above, and moderate your behaviour accordingly in future. Cheers!
