Braised red cabbage with pear, boiled new potatoes and 'Noix de Veux' fried in garlic butter, all bought from the market in Dijon this morning.

To be washed down with the remains of the Chorey les Beaune from the other day's outing to Pommard.

No, No, mayo and cheese should never be put together', it's just so wrong (and I don't like chives) (don't like garlic either). :)

I just had a very crusty cheese baguette by the way.

Good thread by the way Shane.

Just back from holiday to France and Tuscany, where we brought back LOADS of munchies in the car, so tonight it was the finest, locally produced (in Tuscany), Parma ham, salami and pancetta. Also some Jambon de Pays, various types of pâté and charcuterie, Comté, Camembert and Pecorino cheese, beautiful black olives from Nyons, in France, and various salads and some crusty baguette, all washed down with a couple of bottles of Morellino di Scansano... Lurvely!!

Anyway after 4 weeks away, it's good to be back with all the daftees! :)

not at all, we have been veggie in our house for about 20 years now and I cant say that I miss meat.

You do have to be a bit more creative but the old favourites like shepherds pie with lamb quorn mince is so much better than a meat version (I think so anyway).

Why do French names have to be given to dishes. So pretentious!
Any meal or course can be described or named in English.

I also object to Gallicisms (or any other 'isms') being dropped into the English language, it's unnecessary and again, pretentious, or in the case of Americanisms, done out of laziness!

Nope, still don't get it

:carrot::whistle::laugh:

Our fresh carrots straight from the garden taste terrific. Stuff from the supermarket, even here, is tasteless rubbish. In fact all our veg is good but then, so is our home grown meat. At least we take the responsibility for looking after the animals well, then dispatching them as quickly and humanely as we can. I reckon that's better than assuming they come plastic wrapped from Tesco.

Couldn't do without meat altogether though and I see no reason why we should although I understand the arguments for and against.

That waiter in the meat restaurant is so accurate its unreal.

Can one of the vegetarians here tell me why it always seems the norm to have a meat substitute? What's wrong with Veg and two veg?? There are surely things like beans that are protein!! It doesn't defeat the object but it dents it a little?

Trumpton_Rioter
19-08-2013, 12:09
We choose to have a meat sub because we want something else on the plate and choose not to eat meat - simples?

Would you have meat and 2 meat (well you probably would in some context) but its the same concept because you would soon get bored with just a plate of meat so you have chips or veggies as an accompaniement and variety.

I am not a veggie Nazzi saying everyone should stop eating meat because like everything in life, its all about personal choice :)

Gordon Steadman
19-08-2013, 12:13
I am not a veggie Nazzi saying everyone should stop eating meat because like everything in life, its all about personal choice :)

Couldn't agree more.

The variety on a plate thing is just not something I would have thought of. We have trouble choosing every day with all the stuff coming out of the garden and then the freezer in the winter.

However veggie animals like cows etc have teeth for grinding up grass etc

My niece became a veggie after about 1 year she started getting skin problems , went to see the dock and he said " are you a veggie ? " now eating meat again and all has returned to normal
Must be some lack of protein

I eat ANYTHING that runs slower than me , so be warned :D

How old was your neice? Could it have been puberty/acne that may have been a cause of her skin problems? It is an easy option for the doc to blame it on being a veggie. As long as you lead a healthy lifestyle and eat healthily there is not reason why being a veggie should mean that you are any less healthy than a meat eater. You can get all the correct proteins and vitamins you need within a veggie lefestyle provided you eat the right stuff.

I guess in the olden days the teeth were designed to be used for meat eating but like most creatures we have evolved and now, due to advances in technology we have developed healthy non meat options so we no longer have to eat meat to survive.

The human body was also designed to walk/run on our feet but I bet you dont run/walk everywhere - I bet you use some other form of transport to get you from A to B.

humans also had a lot more hair covering their body way back in the day but now we have evolved to be less heirsuite (SP?) because we now wear clothes - well I am assuming that applies to you and you dont, chase and then eat everything that is slower than you, down the road naked or in a loin cloth

maybe you looked ill because you were not substituting the proteins you usually got from meat with other stuff?

Each to his or her own I guess, Geoff, but that would be my idea of hell!

Eating good food (in the company of friends and family), and just as importantly, looking forward to the event, is a MAJOR part of my existence. I simply couldn't go through a day without eating something, home-made, that was very tasty and exciting!! :exactly:

I guess that Italians (and other Europeans) 'live to eat', whereas for a lot of British people, it's a case of 'eat to live', or it's just plain old sustenance.... However, I think that living on your own, with no-one to share a nice meal or bottle of wine with, partly explains your apathy towards eating well. It needn't be like that, though! :)

Marco.

Barry
24-08-2013, 21:00
I live on my own and I like to eat well. Since being diagnosed as having Type II diabetes, I watch what I eat very carefully. As a consequence of this, not only am I now eating and enjoying foodstuffs that I would have declined (such as fish), but I enjoy food a lot more than I use to.

Not only that, but I enjoy cooking and food preparation to the extent that I go shopping nearly every day for fresh vegetables and meat from our local family greengrocer and butcher. Whilst I have always eaten sensibly and had a balanced diet, I think I'm eating better still - good enough for me to manage my diabetes by diet alone.

Of course I do miss some things such as pastry: steak and kidney pies, pork pies, Cornish pasties as well as fruit pies. :( But I am allowed the occasional treat. :)

Living on your own does have its drawbacks. Some meals are difficult to do for one, for example a Sunday roast with all the trimmings. And cooking does take time and effort, but unless you are content with merely throwing some 'ready meal' into the microwave, one simply has to get on with it. Anticipation of the actual eating of the meal does help enormously (as does choosing the bottle of wine!).

I'm generally on my own these days (stepson's out sewing his wild oats) but regularly have a roast dinner, the joint will last me three days (usually cold with salad etc. day after & curried day after that & sometimes some sarnies in between)

When I lived on my own I found a slow cooker to be absolutely invaluable. Prepare everything the night before and chuck it all in the slow cooker and switch on before you go to work. When you get home and open the front door the smell that greets you is so homely and really gets the appetite up and running. Far better than popping into MacD's for a cardboard burger and fries that look like matchsticks and taste about as bad too... :)

I used to use a slow-cooker when I was a post graduate student. One of the great advantages of a slow-cooker is it allows you to make tasty meals using cheap cuts of meat. And the "welcoming smell" is a real appetiser.

However I stopped using it as it did little to save on time in the actual preparation and cooking. You still have to part cook the meat and vegetables, and that takes time. These days I prefer to spend half an hour preparing the ingredients for say a casserole, pop it into the oven for a hour or two and then get on with something else. When it gets to within half an hour to eating, I prepare the vegetables and steam them for about 10 minutes.

But then I'm retired and my time is my own.

Cheers

[PS By the way what is that horrible 'varnish' MacDonalds cover their fries in?]

I didn't mind the prep work to be honest Barry, in fact I quite enjoyed it. As for part cooking the meat, nope never did that. For example, If I bought a small joint of Brisket I'd flash fry it in a pan to brown the outside then just stuff it in the slow cooker with herbs, a Bay leaf or two (dependent on size), some lazy Garlic (comes pre-crushed in a small jar), a couple of onions, quartered, which I'd also flash fry in the same oil (Groundnut with a dash of Sesame oil) I used for the Brisket, a tin of Baxter's Oxtail soup (or if I was feeling particularly flush some proper beef stock bought from Sainsburys) fortified with a decent slug of red wine, Port or a slug of Watneys or Manns Brown Ale (I'd drink the excess :) ), fresh or frozen Baby carrots (dependent on how tired I was) and a tin of new potatoes (well drained and again flash fried in the oil used for the beef and onions). I'd leave home at about 7:30am to catch a bus to work, switching on the slow cooker as I left and when I'd arrive back home at around 5:30pm I'd have a pot of exquisite stew with enough to see me through three meals (I'd portion it out and freeze the other two servings in plastic containers I kept when ordering a Chinese meal). My mouth is watering just thinking about this... :D

As for the stuff MacD's put on their fries, could be this:
