Just thought I'd share this with you.

Recently I went to my friends house and listened to his system and I was very impressed, now I don't really like Leonard Cohen, but it sounded like he was in the room, the musical performance was delightful and tuneful, together with timing.

I asked about the CDP, it was a Technics SL-PG490, an old model apparently, but he really liked it because it had something called MASH, so I bought a beauty on ebay, but it didn't sound anywhere near as good as my friends, (sounded like it had fluff on the needle),he told me he had tickled his a bit (he's clever like that), so I got him to "tickle" mine, (CDP that is), at his house mine now sounded as good as his, I was thrilled.

When I got it home it didn't sound as good as his again and we have almost identical systems, so he came round and had a listen, he agreed it was woolly in the bass, instruments were not well defined and spaciality between instruments and vocals were unconvincing.

Then he noticed I had a pair of interconnects between the CDP and the pre-amp that were 5' long, I told him I had bought the plugs to make 2 leads out of one, but I hadn't got the confidence to cut and solder them.
So he cut one pair down to about 20" and put new plugs on.

ABSOLUTELY STUNNING!!!! now it was sounding as good as his, the bass was extended, tight and fast, the instruments sounded as though the performers were gelling together and the whole performance was superb, it made the hairs on my head stand up, my reaction was "fffffffflipping heck!!

He told me the long length was too hard for the CDP to drive and the short lengths made it easier (that's how I understood it anyway).

Although I'm still a vinyl nut, it was pleasing to get such a result from my CDP and for the small cost of a couple of phono plugs, pity I've only got about 20 CD's, still now I don't mind looking in charity shops for them.

enjoy your music

Doesnt say much for the CD players output stage.

Glad all is well now though.

5 feet is a hell of a length of cable

Be interesting to compare short to long in other systems.

I assume short wins 90% of the time

Interconnects between source and pre should only be around a metre. Different for active pre to power if it can drive them. Hence not a good idea with a passive pre.

.
Great result Al.

Are you now a Leonard Cohen fan?

John.

Really? Most pickup arm leads are 4' long, and the signal level is far lower.

What about the length of the cable connecting the tuner to the aerial? Probably about 30' long and it also handles signals of no more than 1mV.

It all depends on the output impedance of the source.

I meant interconnects
The lead from my Technics to SUT is around .75 metre at a guess

Certainly from the point of view of being neat and tidy, short interconnects are better. But from an electrical point of view, it does depend on the output impedance of the source.

I did try swapping the interconnects I use from pre - power (AVT Matrix 6) with the ones which we had shortened for the CDP and it lost enthusiasm, sounded a little suppressed, the AVT's have a little block inline with "electricky" things in them, my friend said they were a bit too hard for the CDP to drive, so we swapped back and it was OK again.

I don't understand impedance and resistance etc, but my mate does.

I'd assume, usually, a 5' I/C would be worse than 2-3'
Having said that I have one longer !
:)
But it has to be to reach my tape deck (not enough room for all the kit)

Spot on Barry. Many modern CDPs have VERY healthy output voltages of between 1.5 and 2.5mV, so 5 feet of interconnect is nothing out of the way at all so one cannot generalise about the IC lengths to use between CDPs and pre-amps. Older machines that may have a much lower output may not be able to drive longer lengths, especially where passive pre-amps are concenred without some loss of signal volume but 5 feet of cable should have little bearing on frequency response (if any) so it becomes more a level matching exercise (ie turn the volume up!).

That Techy was my first " proper" cdp.

So exactly how did your friend " tickle" yours?

Must've been a good tickle cos every cdp I bought after it sounded better. :)

Hi Al,

To improve things a little further, noticing it's a plastic transport, try placing the "listen-to" disc on the tray, then place another disc on top, ensure it's perfectly central, then play your disc. Yes, 2 discs will be in your transport.

Let me know your findings.;-)

Ah, that old chestnut !!!

Be careful doing this as some x'ports will get in a tangle with the extra disc and you will need to take the machine apart to remove it.

True, I was also going to point this out. cheers.
