View Full Version : WTD: Shure V15 Type III Jico SAS stylus .......

.............. to replace the lamentable Ed Saunders effort that my newly acquired cart came with.

Despite this I really like the cart and can see its potential with a decent stylus fitted.

So, in the forlorn hope that somebody has a decent Jico stylus (SAS ideally) or similar or even an original lying around that they no longer need I am placing this ad.

Please let me know if you have anything suitable.

Thanks.

Hi Mike,

Did you try the Ed Saunders stylus at 1.5 g? I have a few V15III replacement styli (a noname VN35E (1.5g), a noname VN35HE (1.75g) and an Ed Saunders VN35E (>1.0g) , none of them plays well at 1 g. As far as I know even the Jico SAS needs at least 1.25g.

Hi Ronald.

Thanks for your input. Yes, I tried from 1.0gm to 1.75gm (!) with no discernible improvement. I think it was just a bad cart / arm / cable / phono stage match. Now given up entirely on the V15 and now using a 2M Blue.

Live and learn I guess :)

Hi Mike,

I received my Ed Saunders Stylus last Friday, it tracks fine just a little above 1.0 g (edited the text in my message) in my Dual 701. I also have a 2M Blue, it tracks OK but I can't get used to the highs it's producing (used it in a moded Rega RB-250).

Ronald.

Edit: Seems I did not run the right records yet with the ES needle. It sounds very bad with records that have some sibilance and there is no way to solve this (changing VTA/VTF).

I use an Ed styli on my 'V15/III'..Tis bright & revealing of surface noise in the wrong amp as ive discovered. Only thing i dunni loike is it bounces like mad. Makes me nervous. Im gonna try it in half a dozen or so different amps i have in mind see how it goes..

Sold mine pretty sharpish.

Just could not tame the sibilance, whatever I did. Dreadful thing !

I'll probably stick with the Pickering 'XV15/625E' cart tbh..

Weird... They must be very arm/deck/system specific then. Which tip did you have on it? I used to use one with the Jico and it was a lovely sounding cart on mt TD124 on a 3009 SII none improved.

As allready suggested on other forums, I think, there must be a difference between the 'older' and newer Ed Saunders Needles.

Brings it out of the 70's and more up to date in sound.

Jesus i would not want that, looks more promising keeping it then :eyebrows:

Have you read the Ed Saunders litrature in the link ?

The cantilever has a 1.0 mil wall thickness and 20 mil diameter
exhibiting very low moving mass.

No wonder the damn thing isn't tracking properly... Low mass my arse...

Typos FTW ;)

lol.. yeah.. ok, up to date is probably not the right term as it sounds sooo cliche. So, how about much more acceptable to todays sympathetic expectations in reproduction.

Well it's down to personal choice. I like the sound of the 60's/70's clobber.. I certainly do not like the sound of today.. :)

Reyt, over the weekend the first amp at hand i plugged the TT in was an old trio 'KA2000'! Bingo sounds bootiful, so i swapped over to the Trio 'KA2000a' i'd just recapped..That's it no problems what so ever with this cartridge & Ed styli.. Looks like it Shure 'V15/III' for life.. You can have yer over expensive flashy Hi-Fi equipment ;)

I bought a Logic 'DM101' when they first came out.. Did the big spring around the bearing housing upgrade later on

the big centre spring remained through the ranges ,however my MK1 seems a bit of a prototype , and does NOT have a centre spring and never had one  , my MK 2 does however .
