10 inch microgroove LPs, when were they popular?

Amongst the 'stuff' that we acquired when we bought our french property were some french artist LPs.

Five of them are 10 inch diameter 33 1/3 discs, I have looked closely at them but there are no dates whatsoever on the discs or sleeves.

My question is when were 10 inch LPs in prominence? Was it just after 78s declined, as they are the same diameter?

10" diameter 33 1/3 rpm discs were introduced at the same time as the 12" version.

Taken from Wikipedia:

Owing to marketing attitudes at the time, the 12-inch format was reserved solely for higher-priced classical recordings and Broadway shows; popular music appeared only on 10-inch records. Executives believed classical music aficionados would leap at the chance to finally hear a Beethoven symphony or a Mozart concerto without having to flip a seemingly endless series of four-minute-per-side 78s, but popular music fans, used to consuming one song per side at a time, would find the shorter time of the ten-inch LP sufficient. This belief would prove to be erroneous in the end, and by the mid-1950s the 10 inch LP, like its similarly sized 78 rpm record, would lose out in the format wars and be discontinued. Ten-inch records would reappear as mini-albums in the late 1970s and early 1980s in the United States and Australia as a marketing alternative.


A variety of musical styles were recorded: Classical, Jazz, Blues and Folk.

I have some Kathleen Ferrier song albums on 10".

I have also found two 10" albums of the Von Trapps singing various ditties, doubtless as a spin-off (sorry) of the SOM. I was keeping them with a plan to post on eBay at Christmas time an ad of the variety - Are you obliged to give a Christmas present to somebody you truly loathe? If so, I have the solution...from the passive aggressive guide to gift-giving:)

I've just been listening to a new 10" album tonight - Quadrophenia Demos 1 by Pete Townshend ( I am awaiting vol 2). Radiohead did a couple albums on double 10" vinyl some years ago. Also there is the Rickie Lee Jones 'Girl At Her Volcano' EP from 1983. I'm sure there are lots more 10" releases over the last 30 years.

and that that particular Ricki Lee Jones is a cracker of a recording! The dynamics on 'Under the Boardwalk' could be used to demonstrate the superiority of a lovingly mastered analog recording!
I have some Deutchse Grammofon early classical work on 10" and also an EP of a jazzy singstress called Wilson, dont recall her first name.

Actually, I didn't think I had any 10", but I have found one "you go to my head" by Matilda Santing and the quality is excellent.

I've got a few classical and jazz 10 inchers but also the excellent and hilarious 'Songs by Tom Lehrer'.

To resuscitate this thread for a moment, I have been sorting out my lock up and have found a box full of good nick inherited 10" records including Philips, DG and Deccas (mono and stereo) most of which do not feature in the normal discogs type databases, or maybe I'm interrogating them wrongly:scratch:. I also have box after box of quality surplus classical stuff, plus box sets, and I'm not sure I want to be bothered with Okki Nokki'ing them all and re-sleeving them and listing and posting out etc, but there is a lot of good stuff here.

If I do decide to offload them all at once (and there may be a thousand LPs in total), does anybody here have a recommendation for a reputable dealer they have used to sell classical LPs/10 inchers please?

I used to sell quite a few 10'' singles in the record shop back in the 80's Tears For Fears ''Shout'' was available on 7'',10'' & 12' singles as an example..
