View Full Version : Does anyone have a full requency measurment mic I could borrow?

I'm dying to try drc, my room is shouty as f*ck and sure it would benefit from it.
It seems that all of the "in the box solutions" are very pricey or not compatible for one reason or another with my set up.
So if anyone has a mic I could borrow, just to let me run some measurements and test some software, it would be much appreciated. Of course I'd be willing to pay postage etc, or if you're near to me, I'd be happy to collect in person (I live in Surbiton).
Also if anyone has any tips on techniques (good form etc; I'm a novice with this) or software that works well for them, please feel free to share it in here!
PS. I use Jriver and haven't exploreed this functionality, has anyone here used it and what results did you achieve with it?

What I do is set up the test file in my DAW (Reaper, http://www.reaper.fm/ free, non-expiring, uncrippled demo available) and put the mic on another channel, with the input monitoring activated (but the channel output turned down) and SPAN loaded in to the fx bin. You can then see what the white noise looks like after it's been 'processed' by your room and can see where the modes etc are. Another fun thing to do is walk up and down the room with the mic and you can see how the modes change from primary to tangenital and back again etc.

I use Holmimplulse SW and a Behringer mic with a mic preamp. This plays into my analogue preamp and into the system or now into my DSP DCX / pre.
A simple frequency sweep will so you bass boom / shout issue frequencies.

The aim is +/- 5dB in room as a good guide.
I've found that freqs above say 500Hz don't respond well to DSP correction. In the critical 1000 - 12000Hz range you can hear the meddling effects - well at least I can. A shouty room would be best tamed by acoustic treatment in my experience.
Typically a nice slow but steady trail off above 10Khz sounds best in room. This is to taste and room though. Having control over the various freq band by having an active 5 way setup I have quite a degree of flexibility.
I assume you can you Jriver could do the same DSP manipulation as other DSP systems but I've not tried it.
