Just taken delivery of this; plumbed it straight in.

No physical preamp.

Sounds absolutely amazing out of the box; utterly destroys my Caspian m2 in every way...damn!!!

Brb, got some music to rediscover

Doesn't surprise me. Cannot believe how some people think that level-matched, non clipping amps all sound the same!

Definitely seeing your system progress through the months, your Caspian is the weak link.

Have fun!

One real concern is turning my DAC off though, its got valves and has a turn off thump. I turned it off a minute ago and it was more of a turn off punch in the face! I'll damage my speakers if that happens every time. Any ideas?

Its funny Neil, I didn't realise what I was missing before until I put this thing in. A big step up for sure!

Yeah I get the same thing, so I always power my amp down & wait 30 secs or so before powering anything else down. Also power on my amp last if I need to switch everything on.

Just wait until you put a pre amp in the chain, you really will understand what you are missing then. :stalks:

Can you tell me more please Tony?

I was told that removing a pre amp is best (less is more and all that).

I use digital volume (64 bit) and (as you know mainly listen to red book rips, so they're 16 bit. I was under the impression that I had 48 bits headroom before I start losing them due to digital attenuation.

What have I missed?

Is your attenuator properly dithered?
Keith.

In J river? I don't know; when I read about it on their site they made no mention of that. Can you tell me more?

If you go to my site, BLOG section, 'how to get music from a computer', there are two white papers by Daniel Weiss, one is a comparison between digtial and analogue attenuators.

Cheers Keith; I think it can be turned on (please see post no.11)

Does that look like the right solution to you? Thanks for your help.

Hmmm dithering at 8bits, ideally you would have a 'coarse' analogue attenuator and then fine tune with a digital attenuator, which is properly dithered.
How much attenuation are you using in JRiver?
Keith.

I have yet to hear any direct cd/dac/processor sound as good as one using a quality active line stage.

It depends on how loud the music was recorded at, but the loudest I'd have it is about 60% turned up; louder stuff or later at night looks more like 15-20%.

I'm going to need a pre amp, aren't I :(

I've got some 3rd world debts to pay off before I can think about one of those...

Possibly or reduce the overall gain of your system, can you reduce the output from your dac?
Keith.

I bet you know what the next question is... how do I do that?

XLR attenuators?

Could the designer reduce the output, the Weiss dacs and Network players have a variable analogue output it is useful, you can have just the right amount of gain for your system and use as little as needed digital attenuation.
Keith.
