Sad to hear that. A really talented guy who made me laugh many times. I think his work will live on for generations to come.

Alas, no more. They don't make them that funny these days. Another great personality from my part of London to have passed away in the last couple of years. RIP Mel.
One of the great comedians and comedy writers of our time, thank you for all the laughs Mel and God Bless...
RIP Mel, the dart throwing sketch( ie drinking match) was genius.
Neither did I, so you can imagine my surprise when I read that on the BBC News web-page, cited by Neil.
Mel Smith was one of those comics of the '80s (along with Griff Rees-Jones, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Harry Enfield and Ben Elton) whose humour was sarcastic, 'arch', topical and knowing - and actually funny. Unlike today's stand up 'comics', whose so-called humour is obvious (they go for obvious targets), snide, "in your face" and generally unpleasant - and not at all funny.
I guess the last appearence by Mel Smith was as the hotel manager in Steven Poliakoff's 'Dancing on the Edge', shown on BBC at the beginning of the year.
RIP Mel. You will be missed.

I was so shocked when I heard the news about Mel Smith passing today.
He, along with many of the names mentioned earlier in this thread were my comic heroes as I grew up in the 80's.
A great loss to fans like me but even a greater loss to comedy as a genre.
RIP Mel :(
