uuuummmmm:( , these are hard to find . the sb-x3 and the sb-x1 use a different tweeter , i have found them on ebay in the states at the end of last year though , the sb-x5 seemed a popular speaker over there and easier to get parts for , have you taken the tweeter apart yet , sometimes it is the start or end of the coil that has gone before the winding onto the main coil , i have repaired tweeters before that have gone like this , sometimes you can carefully pull a turn of wire off of the coil , just enough to solder to the terminal , how did you find them apart from the damaged tweeter (a little hard to tell i know) and what sort of shape are they in cosmetically? i will have a quick scan on ebay worldwide for you to see if i can see anything.

here are the original specs it may help you find a good match for replacement
crossover frequency -1.000hz , 4,200hz
frequency range 39-20,000 (-10db)
2.5cm dome tweeter

Managed to get this apart , found 2 wee thin strands coming from the voice coil ? not connected to the magnet

`Looks like the end of the road

any suggestions for a pair of replacements ?

if the coil isnt burnt its probably repairable, pull the thin wires very gently 1 turn each off of the coil , you should then have enough to put it back together and make a solder repair back on to the terminals , i have done this with many tweeters successfully and they have worked fine for years afterwards.
put a pic up of exactly what you have , and i will give my opinion , if i think its repairable and you are not confident in doing it you could post it to me , i could do it and send it back ,, the banana plug conversion you have done is something i have been meaning to do for a while ,

˄ What he said.

If its completely knackered I can highly recommend a suitable replacement from here : http://stores.ebay.co.uk/CN-AUDIO-PARTS/Voice-coil-/_i.html?_fsub=1254872015&_sid=858410565&_trksid=p4634.c0.m322

I repaired some Mission 751 tweeters with their VC/Dome assemblies & they sounded better than the originals.

As long as there's continuity across the coil then, yes. As James says, you can unwind one turn of the coil to give you more wire or it can be extended if you're careful enough.

Heck, if you're still not convinced, re-assemble it, pack it up , drop me a PM for my address, send it down to me and I'll do it for you!

(But do check the coil first!)

Should be ok with a multimeter - checking for continuity right?

touched my Bosch digital meter across the 2 wires and nowt :(

I don't have a analog meter to double check with so looks like its blown :(

If it's a really minor gap, isn't there the possibility to apply some copper electrical tape on the VC?

Doesn't sound good. One final thing, though, and apologies if this is stating the obvious, but are you making sure you touch the meter probes to the silver coloured ends of the wires? If you touch to the copper coloured part you won't get a reading as this is the insulating varnish.

No, if there's fused break in the very fine wire, you would not necessarily see it to locate it's position and the tape would foul the magnetic gap and possibly imbalance the coil/diaphragrm assembly.

My meter does not have clip on ends , just pointed probes , the only way I can get a reading is too trap the wire between my thumb and the probe with both wires , I then get a reading through my body ?

That's not a problem as the resistance of your body will be much higher than that of the voice coil, so it won't affect the reading to any significant extent. It's just important that you're touching the probes to an area of wire that has had its varnish removed - it won't hurt to scrape a little off near the end with a knife if you want to make sure.

Can I sent it too you ?

If its not savable it can go in the bin , if it repairable then :)

PM me if you can have a look

Thanks

Al

It certainly looks repairable... If it had overheated the coil would have burn marks & if there was a fracture you wouldn't get continuity.

if the voice coil has gone dont bin it all , as in the link by astari knight shows , you can just buy a new voice coil and diaphram they have various sizes listed they will have something suitable , if you do decide to replace the tweeters completely, some seas or audax units should be a direct screw in replacement , if you are going to do this let me know as i may purchase the originals from you . also if you replace the other tweeter you dont need to get the back of the cabinet off , these are not designed to come apart in that way , all you need to do is remove the bass driver , remove the tweeter surround ring (black rubber one , it just pulls off from the outside exposing 4 x screws) undo the screws and the tweeter will just fall out inside of the cabinet. i will gladly take a look at the tweeter if you want to send it to me.
