I couldn't quite believe it when we got back from Tunisia. I was hoping for some nice 'cooler' whether.

Although to be fair it is cooler here, but not a lot and unlike Tunisia, we don't have Air Conditioning in our room :(

Whilst it is a bit too hot, the lack of rain means i can do the roof without worrying too much with waterproofing every night.

So apart from very brown neck, arms and knees plus a bit of sunstroke (even I'm not daft enough to expose the top of my balding pate), everything is fine. Apart from being totally knackered that is. Roofing is a young man's game, especially when it involves demolishing a wall or two at the same time and then building them back up again elsewhere:eek:

Good thing the wife is the labourer or I'd have to carry the tiles, blocks and mix all the way upstairs too:eyebrows:

Me too, only my second visit to the local since the new year, but I just knew I wouldn't sleep without a few beers down my neck.

I really don't like heat, winter I'm never uncomfortable, but anything over 75 degrees and I start suffering. I spent much of the morning laying under my van working on the engine and that was murder!

I suspect it would be really nice by the sea at the moment. Here in Berkshire it's not quite the same however. Today seems even hotter but we've got all the windows open and fans running so quite bearable. As we have decorators in tomorrow my wife and I have the challenge of moving our queen sized bed from our room to the spare, which I'm really not looking forward to in this weather. We'll probably wait until a little later to do it as the weather would have cooled marginally.

Hot here by the sea and no respite at night with temps of 18c at midnight.

Very little breeze here.

Thankfully I only have to walk 200ft through the garden and I am on our private beach so swimming is easy for me, although the sea temp is like a Luke warm bath at the moment!

The only upside, is that after a few days you start getting used to it.

Today has been very uncomfortable for me, the shaded outside wall thermometer in my garden has been reading a steady 86 degrees all day. I don't think the fact I had quite a few pints last night is helping either, only got myself to blame though.

You know the stories that start of with "When I was a young lad..". In my case it is all true. I remember having to walk to school and back so that I could use the bus fare to buy myself an ice lolly or a cold drink. When it was the dry season I even took a spare t-shirt with me in my school bag. I still wear a t-shirt under my shirt till today out of habit.

It was sixpence to travel the two Underground stations to my primary school. I was either lucky and my Dad gave me thruppence for that day, or it was my turn to go buy my form teacher's lunch from the store up the road, the prize for which was a lolly.

Could you imagine the H&S types fainting at the idea now!

It's funny that you mention that. I had the task of organizing the sandwich orders for the teachers and collect them from an absolutely fabulous sandwich bar called Klein Maar Fijn (It's a Dutch set of words), and a had an agreement with the owner with regards to my commission for taking the orders to him. A mate of mine went back about 35 years later to see if the place was still standing. Not only that, the sandwiches still tasted just as fabulous after all those years. It's one of the places I wish to revisit before my time is up.

As high as 32 forecast for tomorrow they say. Well it's been that most of the day here, near Heathrow where the records are often met. Local temperatures seem to exceed forecasts, so I wouldn't be surprised to see 34 or more maybe. I'll be keeping an eye on my accurate outdoor thermometer (in the open in permanent shade, before anybody starts lecturing).

I really hate hot weather!!!

I like this weather - if it was like this all year round I'd be happy :)

Although it is probably a lot warmer for you down south - If you are hanging your thermometers on a brick wall don't forget that will heat up the immediate environment all day and well after dark so the real temp is probably quite a bit lower.

When I worked in the repair business I regularly saw the field engineers bring in audio, video, and electrical appliances that had got zapped by lighting. Satellite dishes and TV aerials are the most common point of entry. And they tend to be connected to audio equipment.

pjdowns
22-07-2013, 09:36
Interesting, so turning off the Hifi may not help if it goes in via the Satellite dish?

Although the Satellite dish is connected to the surround sound amp which is then connect to the Pre amp.

Turning it off can limit the damage. I had pics of equipment blown up by lighting but I seem to have deleted them. I tend to unplug my audio equipment from the mains when not in use. I use a distribution block with noise filters etc that I designed together with a friend of mine. So I only need to unplug one mainslead.

Where I live was hit by some fairly powerful thunderstorms in the early hours of this morning. A line of storms began developing about 250 miles SW of my location at around 19:30 yesterday evening and as they pushed north-eastwards they continued to develop in intensity until they reached us here in Northamptonshire at around midnight and have been rumbling away ever since. Storms continue to develop along a corridor right across the heart of England, moving from the SW towards the NE, with another heavy belt of storms waiting in the wings over western England and East Wales, arranged in a north/south alignment, currently stretching from North Wales and on down into West Dorset as I type. These too are steadily moving north-eastwards therefore if they do not fizzle out in the meantime, they should be with us here between 6am & 7am.

And now the shipping forecast...

woke with a start in early hours thought a bomb had gone off !!! (unfortunately I've heard them) was the worst thunderstorm I heard, a few properties badly damaged and a car caught fire in town. got this quote from bbc news

Caught fire

A number of properties in Sutton-in-Ashfield, Nottinghamshire, were damaged by lightning, with firefighters called just before 06:00 BST. A car in the town also caught fire.

Denise Walton, who lives on Stuart Street, where a house was struck, said: "I heard an almighty bang and a flash, the whole street seemed to light up.

"Then I looked through the window and I could see smoke coming into the sky, I didn't know where it was coming from.

"Within 10 minutes the fire brigade was here and then all hell let loose. It was frightening. Shocking, actually."

Is about 500 yards from me

Hedgehogs are partial to dog or catfood Roy, as I found out to my cost when I lived in Norfolk. The little buggers would come through the dog flap in the kitchen door and nick my dogs food when he was sitting with us in the lounge. Things would get a bit tense if he caught them at it, but they'd just roll up into a ball so he could do nothing but bark at them...

A pleasant day at Suffolk Coastal. We've been on a couple of moonlit walks lately and it's been wonderful looking at the lights and the moon reflected on the sea. Great for once that we both have jobs to go back to in September :)

they are my cryptonite as well - cant have them in the house at the moment cos I am trying to lose weight and if they were there, in the fridge just staring at me then I would scoff them all one after the other

*In my best attempt at a David Attenborough impression* "After a long trek through bitterly cold conditions and treacherous terrain, we discover the only colony of polar audiophiles known to mankind. Their behaviour is much like their cousins who can found in more temperate regions except most of their available cash is spent on powerful de-icing equipment, thus their music making abilities are far inferior to that of their cousins as they continually attempt to coax their clapped out Amstrad music systems into life..." :D

Not a good idea. The chill will bugger up the suspension compliance on your cartridge and you won't be able to play anything. :)

Not a problem as I own megabucks worth of de-icing equipment and since I sold all my gear to fund that, I've no cartridge to worry about (or system for that matter)

Yeah well, just don't go outside to pee in a polar blizzard. You'll get icicles! :)

Then it has to be a Hornet. Ah, looking closer (and with my specs on) I see that it is ;)

Yup, went into service too late to see combat in WW2, rumoured to be capable of nearly 500mph. You know that anyway.

Reputably 472mph at 22,000 ft. Way faster than the jet powered Meteor of the same era and apparently with tremendous range.

Seems it was a good aircraft.

A couple of watts should do it comfortably in the average room. I believe the efficiency is around 100db.
