Hi

I purchase a pair of these from ebay

Tried to wire them up today and It looks like the binding post fittings are missing ?

At the moment it has 2 nylock nuts ( painted black ) on each pair of binding posts ?

What are they supposed to have fitted ?

The nylocks only tighten down onto the plastic sleeves

A pair of Technics speakers I used to have had the same binding posts... Look like this:

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&docid=Y-QQTAF8OjZJ4M&tbnid=GG0q2TgEO6QwFM:&ved=0CAUQjBwwADhz&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.hi-fi.ru%2Fupload%2Fiblock%2F316%2F316fa4055f4f47f1ff 0c171f3ce6fa5f.JPG&ei=bYThUcW0FK6S7AbBsYDYAg&psig=AFQjCNEkF1FnH0s3ygzRUe8-ZUV00zYPMw&ust=1373820397396449

They are "bare wire" only & wont accept banana plugs... Unforgivable in my book :D

Whip 'em off & fit some of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Gold-Speaker-Binding-Posts-Terminals-4mm-Connectors-1-Red-1-Black-Gold-Plated-/330954954239?pt=UK_Sound_Vision_Audio_Cable_Termin ations&hash=item4d0e73d5ff

James

I have overcome the binding post issue had some old stock banana plug posts in the draw , Fitted them fired up the system and it appears one tweeter is not working :(

Do you know how the cabinets come apart ?

I have removed 4 screws from the back to try and remove the back panel and it wont budge

I can also see 4 stud type things on the front ( in each corner ) but they are smooth plastic so cant get a socket on anything to try and undo them

Strange

Hmm that is strange ! My Technics speakers had the same control "pots" and both were dirty causing the tweeters/mids to drop in & out so could be worth giving them a squirt of cleaner. If that fails they are supposed to have thermal relay protection on either all 3 drivers or just the tweeter depending on the market they were sold... I've only got a few pages of the SM but it does show construction & how to reset the protection:

As for getting into the things I would unscrew the plastic connection plate on the rear, then remove the bass driver, get your arm up & push it out... They say a picture is worth a thousand words so I'll just shut up & post another piccy so you can see what I mean :D

Had some time to further investigate the tweeter problem

Removed the bass driver and tried to get it out by putting my arm up inside , NO GO

So decided to see if I could remove the back

Out with special tool

1

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/bigboobs/IMG_2581-1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bigboobs/media/IMG_2581-1.jpg.html)

and no 2

Managed to remove the back panel , it was glued and screwed , I removed the screws but when the back panel

came out it split the chipboard , no big problem as I can re glue and clamp it ready to re fit

Disconnected the wires from the tweeter and put my meter on the terminals and

NOTHING , open circuit

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/bigboobs/IMG_2580-1.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bigboobs/media/IMG_2580-1.jpg.html)
.

.Now hunting for a replacement tweeter

Thats a bummer :( Not sure why you needed to remove the whole rear panel ? I thought you just wanted to remove the connection plate & tweeter ?

Have you tried dismantling the tweeter yet ? Its just a trim ring on the front... Could be a damaged lead out wire, clutching at straws I know but certainly worth checking !

I tried to remove the trim ring and it wont come off

Looking at the back it has 6 nuts and studs holding it in place

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/bigboobs/IMG_2586.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bigboobs/media/IMG_2586.jpg.html)

Now I need to find something small enough to undo them :D

The meter reading was off the speaker terminals on the side of the magnet

Nothings ever as simple as it looks is it !? It could be a fractured lead out wire from the voice coil, seen it plenty of times but of course it could just be burnt to a crisp... Hopefully find out when you get it open :D

In any case it would appear that all 3 models in the range [X1, X3 & X5] use the exact same tweeter just the X1 is missing the phase lens... Might widen the search a little.

Now have the tweeter removed

and looked at the terminal thing

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/bigboobs/IMG_2589.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bigboobs/media/IMG_2589.jpg.html)

It does not have any wires going to it

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v240/bigboobs/IMG_2588.jpg (http://smg.photobucket.com/user/bigboobs/media/IMG_2588.jpg.html)

Cant see any wires in the tweeter either :scratch:

Can you take apart any more ? Ideally need it down to this level where you just have the diaphragm sitting on the magnet

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=i&source=images&cd=&docid=PepzK0ph5kbj5M&tbnid=7vegF2N2ZlVKwM:&ved=0CAUQjBwwAA&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.avsforum.com%2Fcontent%2Ftype %2F61%2Fid%2F73768%2Fwidth%2F350%2Fheight%2F700%2F flags%2FLL&ei=Q7viUbfLBLCP7AbR_oGoCw&psig=AFQjCNGYJDbXBh5SEJ6_2TLDcZ8dfOXYzw&ust=1373899971128710

In the service manual it looks like the trim ring is the black ring just outside the tweeter grille, there should be another 4 screws beneath it to separate the tweeter assembly.

I now have it out of the holder

Looks like the black part is cast alloy and the magnet is pressed into it

As its fobared anyway I may see if I can get it apart , This will involve some hammering  as I don't have a press

I'd imagine the mesh cover is a press fit and might pull out. That may expose some means of removing the diaphragm.

Good call

My Photoshop skills are woeful but bumping up the contrast+brightness on your pic it does look like there are 4 screws under the mesh... Hopefully they hold the assembly together as well as holding the lens in place.

You lads are GOOD

I had it in my hand and did not notice the 4 screws under the mesh

Will see if I can get them out tomorrow :D

Cheers :)

Should you not fix it or find a second hand tweeter, I'm sure there would be alternative units that would do the job. Match the impedance and sensitivity and you'll be OK, you may locate a pair that fit straight into the cabinets and are aesthetically presentable.

james, i have the sb-x5 and the sb-x1 and the tweeters are different they look the same but have a different part number ,does the service manual suggest that they are the same? i only ask as i bought the sb-x1 for spare tweeters in case i ever fry the ones in the sb-x5 , mind you the sb-x1 are rather good and it would be criminal to use them for spares.

They certainly look the same [minus the lens] but without measuring the voice coil impedance its impossible to say... The service manuals show they both share a near identical HF crossover which would indicate they have the same specifications [impedance/sensitivity etc.]

I'd say if it fits then use it
