Allen was actually the nearest.

His mention of HiWell speakers was interesting, if you click the link on my posting about these and go through their product range you'll see that there's an 8" full range driver that looks very similar, apart from the use of a ceramic magnet instead of the alnico. I'd say they manufacture Mr. Cao's speakers for him.

The options are huge, but I'm toying with the idea of a baffled doublet, using a maximum path length of slightly over 0.5m which equates to 1/8 wavelength at around 35/40Hz. This will allow reasonable bass extension from a smaller panel, whilst retaining most of the benefits of a true dipole, still pondering the baffling layout at the moment.

I'll experiment with super tweeters too. It may be beneficial. I have actually bought just about everything I need for this project except the wood (MDF). I'm doing the visible front edges (only about 25mm wide) in brown stone finish paint and the main face of the front panel in gold/brown carbon fibre finish. Just to be a bit different.

Without disassembly you can't, but there have been ceramic magnet versions of the driver which look totally different.

I'm not sure anybody would bother to fake it. Nickel/Cobalt alloys are not as expensive as they used to be.
