Hi all,

I am wondering what sort of speakers people have stashed away - I could really do with a decent pair! I am appealing to all good AoS'ers!

I managed to save up £100 or so to grab some decent speakers off of ebay, however the company I work for has just changed me to part time from full time, so thats half a pay cut - meaning my speaker fund is no more :(.

Currently I have a set of AIWA SX-N999MkII which I got on ebay for £30. Apparently rated at 150 Watts, IM using them on my Pioneer Amp which is 105Watts per channel. The Aiwa's are OK but they do lack the bass I'm looking for as the type of music I listen to has quite a deep bass most of the time.
Aiwa's are in good condition - apart from some moron stuck marble speaker cones to the bottom of them and it has pulled of some of the vinyl.

So now that I dont have any money to spend on some speakers - does any one have any stashed away they dont want anymore ? I'd even trade my Aiwa's if you fancy them - they arn't too bad just not suited to my system - only bought them as a spare pair years ago when I didnt have separates.

Thanks in Advance :)

Hi CJ.

I might be able to help. I have a pair of Royd Conistons in the loft. I will need to get them down, make sure they still work and give them a good clean up. The grille fabric is loose on be corner so I will need to reattach it.

They are yours for the cost of postage, say a tenner, if you want them. If I can post and cheaper I will. You can even arrange your own collection via parcel2go or similar if you like. Look them up, let me know if you want them and I will get them down and get them checked.

They don't deserve to be stuck in the loft and it would be nice for somebody to put them to use and enjoy them.

Edit. I just re-read your post and the Royds may be too small for you. They don't do much bass. Still yours if you want them though

Sounds good - can you get a photo and tell me what the power ratings are ?

That's a really great offer Andrew and the little Royds will be streets ahead of the speakers that Chris is currently using. There may not be more bass, but I'd be willing to bet that what there is, is more realistic sounding.

I wouldn't get too hung up on power ratings Chris, unless your listening room is a converted barn they aren't worth worrying over.

I have been swapping and changing hi-fi for years I started out with a Technics separates system - Amp was the SU-X520. Since then I've had all sorts, such as Nad, Rotel, Sony, Pioneer. I'm a sucker for Pioneer gear and am happy with what I have now, I was actually planning on getting an A400 but the A405 came up and its a good amp so I grabbed it.

Speakers, I started out with the ones from the Technics and used them for years on many systems, after that I sold them as they were too big. I came across some smaller ones in a charity shop made by Sony, the only thing I remember about them was they had Square cones and someone had stuck Wharfedale white mids into them, turned out they sounded awful with the system I had at the time which died so I sold the remaining separates to build another system. From there I got some Wharfedale S500's, to cut a long story short they were stolen from my house. I then ended up with the Aiwas - Cheap and cheerful ebay bargain. Now I'm after something decent and the Royds fit the bill nicely.

So... not quite got the bug yet. :)

Here ya go. They work a treat and sound shockingly good. I still need to repair the grille fabric and there is the odd nick on the fabric. One thing: one of the speaker terminals is a bit loose. Works fine and I will probs be able to fix it, but worth mentioning. If you're careful connecting cables, it's no problem though.

Come on folks. Hasn't anyone else got a pair of of Royds kicking round that Dan could put to use?

I just got outbid on a pair of Edens (went for £42) on EBay because they had a blown tweeter. Its not that rare or expensive, so probs £65 to £70 would have seen them working again. Id put one bid in but forgot about the auction close time. I like fixing and restoring things so they can have another go at life.

Keep your eyes peeled, Dan. Bargain Royds are out there. Just wish I had another spare pair.

It's actually black vinyl, so I have even more sympathy with you on that one :) I don't like black speakers, period. I can just about ignore it with miniatures, but I drew the line with Isobariks in black. With so many lovely wood and other finishes available, why resort to black spray paint?

Mind you, my Dynacos aren't black and they have a first class honours degree in "ugly". Hopefully I can improve their looks. Can't imagine making them worse :)

Well there's no such thing as Black Ash, it was a fad from the 80's within Hi-Fi & furniture. Most often it was vinyl but some companies used real Ash sprayed black..

Why is beyond me!

Agreed. It belongs in the bad taste bin of 80s history, along with padded shoulders :) My Royd Edens (also in the pic) have real Ash cabinets sprayed black. Vandalism, really. Stone cladding for speakers.
