Hi all,

Apologies, I havent been around for a while, I've managed to almost finish my Hi-Fi. I just need a decent turntable and some better speakers. I've got my Hi-FI in a better unit now too as we've moved a lot of stuff around at home. The CD Player is the model I've always wanted, I saw one years ago in a shop called Goodricks in the North East and I managed to get one cheap but in good condition off of eBay (Just need the remote for it). I recently got the amp - again off of eBay. The Amp was a bargain. Speakers are off eBay, they were a quick purchase - I needed something cheap at the time so grabbed them for £20 (including P&P) so my apologies if they are the worst speakers ever seen on this forum, although at 160 Watts they are quite powerful and sound decent.
The Amp (Pioneer A-405) is the best one I've had so far - rated at 105W per channel it's pretty powerful, just need some better speakers. I'm not sure whether the Amp is as good as the A-400 but i think it sounds as good.

If anyone can give me any information about these bits of kit that'd be great, I've no idea of the year of manufacture for any of it.

I'm pleased with it anyway.

PS - Apologies for finger marks etc on equipment - it's at child and dog level!

It looks like you've been busy!
You say you plan to add a turntable - not wanting to insult you by stating the obvious, but hopefully you realise that your amp will need a phono stage - I don't think it has one built in does it. If I'm wrong, just tell me to piss off & mind my own business!
Time to find that new pair of speakers first though, I reckon.

Yes I've definitely been busy, the Amp does have a Phono function, so I'm guessing it does have a phono stage.

As for speakers, as you can see these ones are Aiwa, not the best makers of hi-fi speakers. I have been looking at many different options for speakers, I had my eye on a set of Bose 301's on ebay and they were local, unfortunately looks like someone hit the "Buy It Now" button as they were sitting at £20. I've also been looking at Technics SB-CS9's, Cerwin Speakers and Pioneer.
I'd saved up £100 to buy some off ebay, however my work have just switched me to part time now instead of full time, so have had to use the money :(

I'll get there in the end, would be nice if someone was to donate some 301's though :)

Oh, actually I had my eye on a set of Mission speakers too. :)

Thank God someone beat you to the Bose speakers!
You really don't want those, trust me. There have been several pairs of far, far better speakers than most of those you mention in the AoS classified adverts over the past couple of weeks - I think there are still some Celestions available if you're up for a trip to Leeds.
Why not start a thread and ask what people have available? As well as offers, I'm sure you'll get some sound advice.

Yeah I might do, Leeds is only up the road but I dont have a car.

Can't offer much.... :P dont have any monies at the moment - had to spend what I'd saved on speakers.

TBH, I'm a bit out of shape when it comes to speakers. What would be recommended for my amp ? I listen to Rock N Roll and Rockabilly so I like a nice Deep Bass.

Absolutely, Chris is right.

Bose speakers are unlikely to move you onwards and upwards in Hi-Fi terms. The Cerwin Vegas fall into the 'No, No,' category too, they'll go loud but don't pretend to aim high in sound quality terms. Your little Aiwa speakers will do until you find something worthwhile.

The Pioneer gear is basically OK, in particular the DC unit.

I'm quite possibly the AOS member who searches eBay most for likely Hi-Fi bargains to buy or sell. If I see anything suitable that looks decent in the way of bargain speakers I'll let you know.

Thanks that'd be great!!! -

I'm looking at maybe some Wharfedales - Diamaond 9's look nice but out of my price range so looking for some older Wharfedales!, I usually trawl ebay daily too, can be on there for hours!

I like my Pioneers, Always had a soft spot for Pioneer kit.

What's your speaker budget Chris?

Found these on eBay. They'd work OK with your Pioneer amp and give you a very decent sound for the money. Rogers didn't mess about when designing speakers. See link below.

Very careless of me (the phone had just rung and I wasn't paying attention). Sorted now!

I think that's a bit more than Chris is able to afford Geoff, as he says he's just had a big pay cut. Those speakers are in beautiful condition, though - well worth the asking price.
I still think you should start a thread in the Classified ads Chris - see what the good AoS'ers might have stashed away.

I've seen many decent pairs speakers sell on ebay very cheap. My brother got a pair of mint Mission 760is last week for £19, loads of cheap speaker if you keep a eye out. JPWs mini monitors around the £20 mark too great speaker to start you off:)

Jason.
