A recent find. They still sound very good but both could do with a little TLC.

Are those 15-inchers, Andy? Bet they'd sound fab, housed in some nice vintage cabs! :)

Marco.

Yes they are Marco.

They are the earlier version of the 2080E's in my 2326A speakers

I've been picking up the components for a cheap bitsa system. So far I have some big JBL horns and Vitavox crossovers as weels as these 2080A's. All I need now is some 2" CD's to go with them. I shouldn't have parted with all my 2440/1's and a few years back.

I like unusual vintage drive units like that, so I'd be interested in following the progress of your restoration (with pics) if you can :)

Marco.

Will do.

I may entrust the work to a specialist ( Wembley Loudspeakers) as I need to transfer the original voice coils to the new cones along with the phenolic spyders. I also may have the Alnica magnets recharged if I can find someone in the UK to do it.

In the meantime, these are the crossovers I picked up at this years Audiojumble that I intend to use with the 2080's.

With suitable drivers for the horns I'm contemplating a poor mans CN191

That should be an interesting speaker system when it's up and running Andy. I think you're right to farm out the remounting of the voicecoils, that will require very careful jigging for alignment. I do like compression drivers with horns, they always seem to have a very vital and immediate sound.

I see your user I.D. is BTH K10A. Do you actually own a pair? They are rather similar to the Altec dual concentrics. Didn't Westrex do a similar design?

I have a pair of Japanese seventies Crysler horns which I intend to use with a pair of potent 10" Sony bass drivers soon.

Yes I have a pair of K10A's.

Westrex never made a dual concentric bit the K10A does use the same cone and basket as a Western Electric 4181a. The 4181a was made by jensen in both field coil and permanent magnet versions. Jensen also made them for IPV and and McMurdo used them with a slightly different cone. BTH made them under licence and also adapted them into the only 18" dual concentric I know of.

I also have a pair of original Westrex 2326A speakers that use a modified 2080 bass driver and 2090 compression drivers that have been heavily modified into "book radiators" and designated 2390. They are very rare, Autographs, CN191's and Acoustilens are common by comparison. They were designed as a replacement for the Acoustilens but were only made for a short time as Westrex withdrew from the domestic speaker market.

Your Chrysler horns/drivers together with the Sony bass drivers would look good as a modern rendition of the Western Electric 757 system

I'd swear I've seen a pair of Westrex dual concentrics. It would be thirty or forty years ago. I'll have a rummage through my old literature, which goes back to the fifties.

I see what you mean by the Western Electric 757A being simliar in concept (I Googled for images). My Crysler horns are actually (wide range) midrange units and I'd be using a tweeter above them. Possibly a pair of rather nice Isophon horns I have or Coral super tweeters.

When you have your coils mounted, don't forget the rear spider positioning in relation to the coil position in the magnet gap is critical, as is the distance in depth from the spider to the cone edge.

They may have been Parmeko or Altobass perhaps
