Album Club - Week 98: 18.06.2013: David Bowie - Hunky Dory (1971)

The recent publicity over David Bowie's comeback after a decade made me think of which of his records is actually his best. I think this one will appeal to a wider audience than much of his output. IMO better than his breakthrough album of the following year, The Rise And Fall of Ziggy Stardust....' , I give you Hunky Dory.

This didn't really gain wide attention until after Ziggy Stardust was a hit and came to my notice through the single 'Life on Mars'. Probably the best single Bowie has released. The album contains several well known tracks including 'Oh You Pretty Things' and 'Changes'. Best heard on vinyl - orange label RCA's are widely available but the earliest pressings are getting expensive. The best sounding version I have heard (and own) is the 90's EMI 100 180g reissue. The 1999 remixes which current CDs use are not recommended and rather revise the superb original work by Ken Scott too much.

This is in my all time Top 10 albums, so obviously a 10 from me, I have been playing it a few times recently and its as good as ever.
Life on Mars is also probably without thinking too hard my favorite Bowie Track.

This is more the raw truth I think, before stardom and the image/art-rock vibe took hold on the budding mega-star.

Love it to bits :)

P.S. Shouldn't sleeping (Diamond) Dogs be left to lie? What I've heard from him recently sounds absolute pish to me.....

wonderful album and also my all time fave Bowie LP....very varied album and I particularly like Kooks and his version of Fill Your Head...a very emotional listen for me as when I first heard it I was going through a very difficult time in my life back in the early 80's which that decade as a whole were what I call my wilderness years. I have a couple of vinyls of this but no orangs label and my cd copies are one Japanese mini LP pressings and the emi issue with the bonus tracks..

Have always loved this album. This and Aladdin sane were the two that got me into Bowie

What a great album this is - Ziggy Stardust is THE Bowie album for me and always will be, but this one has always run it a close second.
Much more subtle and understated "Written in pain, written in awe, By a puzzled man who questioned, What we came here for" ('Oh You Pretty Things')
.....whereas Ziggy was utterly "wham bam thank you ma'am"

10/10

This is without doubt my favourite Bowie album, with memorable songs and a thrilling wide-open sound that has to be heard on vinyl to be fully appreciated. An easy 9/10.
