View Full Version : Web Reputation Score

That's what comes up on my office PC when I try and log on here.

Most distressing. Apparently, AoS has a web reputation score too low for me to be allowed to view it.

So what was it, AoS - caught smoking behind the bike sheds?

If I can't find a way around this, I might have to do some work....Scary.

Can you tell me which web blocking software your work is using? And post a screenshot if possible. Or some more detail on the message presented (exact words if possible).

Thanks

Ah, I am at home now. It's by MacAfee. Pretty sure it said the AoS web reputation score was 129 and too low....

Won't be back at work until Thursday, but will have another look then.

Strange really, as none of the other sites I look at (during my break - in case my employer is watching, cough, ahem) have this issue.

Cheers

Martin

(sorry if I put this in the wrong subforum).

I get the same with our corporate MacAfee so I have turn off vpn to view AoS. I could chose it ignore the warning but it would put my name on a list as viewing unsuitable sites.

AoS does have a poor web reputation score, and for good reasons. It encourages low productivity at work and is highly addictive. Not the sort of thing that an ethical work environment would wish to encourage. To rephrase a famous Star Trek line: it's porn, but not as we know it.

Here's the message I get when using our corporate VPN. This sort of site would not normally be blocked but it would be naive of me to ask for it to be unblocked! I've covered up the references to the company name. This may hark back to the virus alerts from a while back. I can't remember how long this message has been showing, I think it's actually quite a while.

the identified source seems to be Mal/Iframe-AL discovered by Yandex, which I think is Russian equivolent to google.. as far as I can tell, all others like google. opera etc have given the site a clean bill, but it does have a blacklist on it.....they claim to have detected it in the last 2/3 days.

sorry if I am boring you but thought you might want to know.

Thank you for this. We are working on getting someone in to do a site audit to understand the cause of these alerts and to do whatever needs to be done to prevent them occurring again.

I can't pretend to understand what's going on, but this must be totally erronerous as AoS is a non-commercial forum - how can we be given a low rating for 'vendor reliability'?

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.....

"Reputation ratings are based upon real user ratings and they tell you how much other users trust this site"

And there are a grand total of 36, 27, 38 'votes' for each rating.

So just under 40 trolls seeking to drive down the site reputation. This is not a reflection of any fact or reality when it comes to the safety of the site.

Please be aware that I am working with experts outside of the team to get to the bottom of the 'Malware' warnings some users have been reporting. The initial feedback I have had is that the forum is not serving malware, but that certain AntiVirus software may be false-positive matching legitimate code to one of their malware signatures. It looks like we are going to have to try and navigate the tortuous appeals and review processes at these organisations.

I just wanted to update you with where we are on this, and say I appreciate your patience and loyalty while we get this sorted.

At long last AoS is no longer deemed too suspicious by our corporate threat detection system. So I can actually read AoS on my work machine once more. It was a long road.

I wonder if some of the language used here gave grounds for doubt and concern.

A good one I would have thought. They have little swearing and do not regularly use words that are not in the English dictionary (dialect of some sort). I doubt sites are read by people making decisions. They will most likely be scanned by software and compared in content and structure to rules derived from common/correct English usage. Invent your own language and it will sound alarms to that software - it will not be able to determine the intent or meaning. The message given when trying to access AoS was suspicious discussion.

Still their software/system has got used to whatever they were not comfortable with so I can speed scan AoS for useful threads whilst working.

Then you obviously don't read the 'juicy bits' of the Wam, Alan, so we'll leave it there. Anyway, I'm delighted that your rather prissy, 'politically correct' works software system finally now allows you to read AoS while you should be working!! ;)

I thought you wanted to 'we'll leave it there' but not so.

Indeed having looked around the WAM you are right it does have areas where people who feel the need to use language their mothers would be proud of them for using can do their thing. Juicey? I mainly use 2 Channel and Classifieds (not that I am selling or even buying much). As you know an edict went out on 2 channels to cease the unnecessary language. The other areas just do not have that magnetic effect they seem to have for you.
Strangely I look at HiFI forums to possbily learn of things which may enable me to enhance my system, and very occasionally to offer my experience to others. AoS managed that with Martin's enthusiasm for Mains regeneration. A major improvement relative to lesser, subtle effects people enthuse over.

Must mention your opinion that our Internet security is prissy to my colleagues. I can imagine their laughter.

So if the difference between the WAM and AoS isn't simply swearing the concern of our prissy protection software must be something other than swearing. I wonder what that might be. It isn't pornographic images so probably just down to the words used in the forum.

Thankfully my employer is broad enough minded to recognise flexibility and not make issue of looking at things that interest us while we work so they do not share your 'should be working view point'

Your response indicates you were not overly happy with AoS being seen as less than cosher. I guess I can understand that nobody likes a poor score where they have put their all into something.

My work software banned AoS and some other random sites a while back, then for some reason it relented and allowed access to them again. I don't think it is anything to do with the bad language more likely the security software, like almost all software, is shite.

I hope you aren't suggesting the software I have written is shite (people still use it). I was thinking of other words/language, other than swearing, not part of everyday English, not even in many, if any dictionaries.

Alan,

Do you have a sense of humour, or are you one of those po-faced folk who go through life without knowing how to smile? That's a rhetorical question, incidentally! My last post was entirely tongue-in-cheek, but you've turned it into some kind of personal dig

One thing I will say, however, is that I couldn't give a monkey's toss whether the use of some Glasgow vernacular (if that's what you were referring to by "use words that are not in the English dictionary (dialect of some sort)", was preventing your works software system from allowing you access to the site. Go and do some bloody work instead, which you're presumably being paid for, would be my advice ;)

If I (along with some of the other members here of Scottish origins) want to indulge in a bit of Scottish or 'Glesga banter', then we'll do so, regardless of whether it affects the site's 'web reputation score' or prevents you from accessing AoS during working hours.

You need to lighten up, mate, and learn to do more of this: :)

Now *that* really is an end to the matter.

Marco.
