Quick question for the Techie gurus.

I know the lid arrangement changed between the Mk2 and Mk5.

Am I right in thinking that the Mk5 lid is held in place magnetically rather than with hinges?
Apart from the hinges are the lids the same?
And can a mk2 hinged lid be fitted to a mk5?

Hi Martin,
For what it is worth my almost brand new MK6 has the standard hinges as for the other MKs
As far as I know the lids and hinges are pretty much the same on all models.
However the caveat here is that I am talking of my experience in OZ and those SLs which I have imported from Japan, there may well be differences in models destined for other countries.

Martin, I have a couple of MK2, a MK5 and a M5G.

The MK5 / MK5G & M5G weren't supplied with hinges, but with some rubber support, non magnetic, to quickly remove the cover.
Not a good solution, though, since the cover easily slips everywhere.
You can buy an original hinge kit for MK2 with self-tapping screws, at Connect Audio Ltd, here:
http://www.ebay.it/itm/Technics-SL1210-SL1200-Mk-2-hinge-kit-inc-screws-/380571985749?pt=UK_AudioTVElectronics_HomeAudioHiF i_Turntables&hash=item589bdba755
asking for the hinge kit for MK5 at order.
This kit can be fit without disassembling the turntable, but keep in mind that the cover position cannot be fine-tuned.
You can buy the full kit, too, but you have to remove the back cover of the turntatble to install it.
